Effect of juggling therapy on anxiety disorders in female patients

Abstract

Aims

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of juggling therapy for anxiety disorder patients.

Design and Method

Subjects were 17 female outpatients who met the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorders. Subjects were treated with standard psychotherapy, medication and counseling for 6 months. For the last 3 months of treatment, subjects were randomized into either a non-juggling group (n = 9) or a juggling therapy group (juggling group: n = 8). The juggling group gradually acquired juggling skills by practicing juggling beanbags (<it>otedama </it>in Japan) with both hands. The therapeutic effect was evaluated using scores of psychological testing (STAI: State and Trate Anxiety Inventry, POMS: Profile of Mood Status) and of ADL (FAI: Franchay Activity Index) collected before treatment, 3 months after treatment (before juggling therapy), and at the end of both treatments.

Results

After 6 months, an analysis of variance revealed that scores on the state anxiety, trait anxiety subscales of STAI and tension-anxiety (T-A) score of POMS were significantly lower in the juggling group than in the non-juggling group (p < 0.01). Depression, anger-hostility scores of POMS were improved more than non-jugglers. In the juggling group, activity scores on the vigor subscale of POMS and FAI score were significantly higher than those in the non juggling group (p < 0.01). Other mood scores of POMS did not differ between the two groups.

Conclusion

These findings suggest that juggling therapy may be effective for the treatment of anxiety disorders.</p
Large Population of ALMA Galaxies at z>6 with Very High [OIII]88um to [CII]158um Flux Ratios: Evidence of Extremely High Ionization Parameter or PDR Deficit?
We present our new ALMA observations targeting [OIII]88um, [CII]158um,
[NII]122um, and dust continuum emission for three Lyman break galaxies at
z=6.0293-6.2037 identified in the Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam survey. We clearly
detect [OIII] and [CII] lines from all of the galaxies at 4.3-11.8sigma levels,
and identify multi-band dust continuum emission in two of the three galaxies,
allowing us to estimate infrared luminosities and dust temperatures
simultaneously. In conjunction with previous ALMA observations for six galaxies
at z>6, we confirm that all the nine z=6-9 galaxies have high [OIII]/[CII]
ratios of L[OIII]/L[CII]~3-20, ~10 times higher than z~0 galaxies. We also find
a positive correlation between the [OIII]/[CII] ratio and the Lya equivalent
width (EW) at the ~90% confidence level. We carefully investigate physical
origins of the high [OIII]/[CII] ratios at z=6-9 using Cloudy, and find that
high density of the interstellar medium, low C/O abundance ratio, and the
cosmic microwave background attenuation are responsible to only a part of the
z=6-9 galaxies. Instead, the observed high [OIII]/[CII] ratios are explained by
10-100 times higher ionization parameters or low photodissociation region (PDR)
covering fractions of 0-10%, both of which are consistent with our [NII]
observations. The latter scenario can be reproduced with a density bounded
nebula with PDR deficit, which would enhance the Lya, Lyman continuum, and C+
ionizing photons escape from galaxies, consistent with the [OIII]/[CII]-Lya EW
correlation we find.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, Accepted for publication in Ap
SILVERRUSH. VII. Subaru/HSC Identifications of 42 Protocluster Candidates at z~6-7 with the Spectroscopic Redshifts up to z=6.574: Implications for Cosmic Reionization
We report fourteen and twenty-eight protocluster candidates at z=5.7 and 6.6
over 14 and 19 deg^2 areas, respectively, selected from 2,230 (259) Lya
emitters (LAEs) photometrically (spectroscopically) identified with
Subaru/Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) deep images (Keck, Subaru, and Magellan spectra
and the literature data). Six out of the 42 protocluster candidates include
1-12 spectroscopically confirmed LAEs at redshifts up to z=6.574. By the
comparisons with the cosmological Lya radiative transfer (RT) model reproducing
LAEs with the reionization effects, we find that more than a half of these
protocluster candidates are progenitors of the present-day clusters with a mass
of > 10^14 M_sun. We then investigate the correlation between LAE overdensity
delta and Lya rest-frame equivalent width EW_Lya^rest, because the cosmological
Lya RT model suggests that a slope of EW_Lya^rest-delta relation is steepened
towards the epoch of cosmic reionization (EoR), due to the existence of the
ionized bubbles around galaxy overdensities easing the escape of Lya emission
from the partly neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). The available HSC data
suggest that the slope of the EW_Lya^rest-delta correlation does not evolve
from the post-reionization epoch z=5.7 to the EoR z=6.6 beyond the moderately
large statistical errors. There is a possibility that we would detect the
evolution of the EW_Lya^rest - delta relation from z=5.7 to 7.3 by the upcoming
HSC observations providing large samples of LAEs at z=6.6-7.3
Long-term follow-up on the use of vascularized fibular graft for the treatment of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia

Abstract

Background

Congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia (CPT) is one of the most difficult conditions to treat.

Methods

Five girls and 3 boys with CPT were treated by vascularized fibular grafting (VFG). The average age at VFG was 7.0 years (range: 1.9–11.5 years) with an average follow-up term of 11.7 years (range: 4.9–19.6 years). Five of the children had undergone multiple operations before VFG, while the other 3 had no such history.

Results

Bone consolidation was obtained in all cases after an average term of 6.6 months (range: 4–10 months); this was with the first VFG in 7 cases but with the second VFG in 1 case. Complication of stress fracture and ankle pain occurred in 1 and 3 cases, respectively, only in cases undergoing multiple operations. Leg-length discrepancy was more prominent in the patients with multiple previous operations (mean: 7.5 cm), than in the cases with no prior surgery (mean: 0.7 cm).

Conclusion

The long-term results of VFG for CPT were excellent, especially in the cases, with no prior surgery. VFG should be considered as a primary treatment option for CPT.</p

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma with leukocytosis and elevation of serum G-CSF. A case report
BACKGROUND: G-CSF is known to function as a hematopoietic growth factor and it is known to be responsible for leukocytosis. G-CSF-producing tumors associated with leukocytosis include various types of malignancies. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 72-year-old man with dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma characterized by dedifferentiated components of malignant fibrous histiocytoma- or osteosarcoma-like features in addition to conventional chondrosarcoma, arising from his pelvic bone. After hemipelvectomy, when local recurrence and metastasis were identified, leukocytosis appeared and an elevated level of serum granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) was also recognized. The patient died of multiple organ failure 2 months after surgery. Autopsy specimens showed that the histological specimens of the recurrence and metastasis were dedifferentiated components, without any conventional chondrosarcoma components. G-CSF was expressed only in the dedifferentiated components, not in the chondrosarcoma components, immunohistochemically. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of chondrosarcoma, or any other primary bone tumor, with leukocytosis, probably stimulated by tumor-produced G-CSF from the dedifferentiated components
