Figures of Speech are expressions which depart from the acceptable literary sense that are employed to give particular emphasis to an idea or a sentiment in order to beautify a literary work such as poetry and proverbs. These devices occupy an important position in proverbs and they perform functions which make the proverbs what they are, that is pithy,  etaphorical and spicy expressions with which sayings are embellished. Figures of Speech are used by proverb coiners to express succinctly a multi-faceted concept in order to make a point in a more powerful and emphatic way. They are used to make speeches very memorable, colourful and appealing in order to achieve some stylistic effect. This paper examines the various figures of speech that are prevalent in some Ondo proverbs. The proverbs are documented in the original, translated and then analysed, pointing out the various poetic devices in them

The Decline of Proverbs as a Creative Oral Expression: A Case Study of Proverb Usage among the Ondo in the South Western Part of Nigeria

It cannot be disputed that proverbs occupy a very central position in creative art. It is deployed in many societies to bring peace where there is hatred, particularly during the settlement of conflicts, disputes and misunderstandings; to facilitate pardon where there is injury, to engender faith where there is doubt, to bring hope where there is despair and light where there is darkness in human relationships, activities and interactions. That creativity is evident through the numerous ways in which proverbs are used, is not in doubt. The value of proverbs is encapsulated in this Yoruba proverb: „Owe l.esin oro; bi oro ba s.onu, owe ni a fi nwa a. meaning „A proverb is a horse which can carry you swiftly (just like creative reflective thinking) to the discovery of ideas sought.. Furthermore, the Ibo culture sees „proverbs as the palm oil with which words are eaten.. However the question had been raised at several quarters whether the use of this very creative oral art has been on the increase or on the decline in human societies. To provide a rational response to this important question, this paper presents a report of the findings of a study on the decline of the use of proverbs and subsequently suggests ways to strengthen and popularize the use of proverbs in the society

Investigating dialectal variation in the English of Nigerian university graduates: Methodology and pilot study

    Get PDF
This paper describes the methodological procedures that will be used in the collection of data for a dialectal study of the English of Nigerian university graduates. It also reports on a pilot study carried out on this topic. The major elicitation instrument will be a Labovian sociolinguistic interview which will be supplemented by reading materials (Labov 1966). The study will also draw heavily on the current SuRE methodology by Upton and Llamas (1999). The theoretical framework that will be used in the analysis of data will be a diglossia model as this approach enables one to view Nigerian English (NE) and Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE) as two languages operating in an extended diglossic situation

Proverb is a canonized oral form that contains the mores, wisdom and worldview of a particular society. As an oral form of the Yoruba people of Southwestern Nigeria, it is used to (re)create identity, interrogate reality, and mediate real and artistic discourses. It is against this background that this paper examines the use of, and modes of mediation of Yoruba proverbs in the song-poetry of Abolore Adegbola Akande, a popular Nigerian hip-hop artiste whose stage name is 9ice. The data for the paper are selected song-texts of 9ice downloaded from different websites. The proverbs in the selected songs were identified and classified into groups. The study reveals that 9ice uses Yoruba proverbs to perform various global speech acts such as boasting, dissing, warning and teaching

The ErbB3 binding protein Ebp1 interacts with Sin3A to repress E2F1 and AR-mediated transcription

    Get PDF
Ectopic expression of ebp1, a member of the PA2G4 family, inhibits the proliferation and induces the differentiation of human breast and prostate cancer cell lines. Ebp1 inhibits transcription of E2F1 and androgen receptor regulated genes such as prostate specific antigen (PSA) through its interactions with histone deacetylases (HDACs). To further understand Ebp1's interactions with other components of the transcriptional repression machinery, we examined the association of Ebp1 with the corepressor Sin3A. Ebp1 interacted with Sin3A both in vitro and in vivo as demonstrated by glutathione S-transferase (GST) pull-down and coimmunoprecipitation analysis. The C-terminal domain of Ebp1, responsible for its ability to repress transcription and arrest cell growth, was necessary and sufficient for binding Sin3A. The C-terminal domain of Sin3A, containing the paired amphipathic domain 4 and the HDAC interacting domain, bound Ebp1. Recombinant Sin3A bound Ebp1 directly, but recombinant HDAC2 failed to bind Ebp1. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and DNA affinity precipitation analysis demonstrated that Ebp1 and Sin3A associate at the PSA and E2F1 promoters. Functionally, Sin3A enhanced the ability of Ebp1 to repress transcription of androgen receptor (AR) and E2F1 regulated genes. These results demonstrate that Ebp1 participates in transcriptional regulation via its interaction with the Sin3–HDAC

The Impact of Stock Market Manipulation on Nigeria’s Economic Performance

    Get PDF
This study is the first attempt to empirically analyse stock market manipulation on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and its consequences on economic performance. The empirical investigation employs a broad data set of 186 actual manipulation cases indicted by the Nigerian Security and Exchange Commission between 2002 and 2016. We embrace market microstructure analysis and the event study method to understand how various manipulation techniques impact on market measures, and the Error Correction Model to evaluate their economic effects. Manipulation is found to distort market efficiency measures (such as Market Capitalisation, Value Traded Ratio and All-share Index) and genuine traders are forced to exit the market to avoid possible trading with a manipulator. Such huge divestment and the subsequent financial risk weaken the ability of the Stock Exchange market to improve economic performance, creating negative consequences at the post-manipulation period. Essentially, economic variables (such as the GDP) react negatively to manipulative trading. This finding is insightful and a prompt to the Securities and Exchange Commission to design policy responses towards deterring and prosecuting unfair trading practices or other activities that contravene the market rules

This paper examined the extent to which couples are involved in the management of their family’s finances: Evidence from Ilishan-Remo Community. The study was driven by the fact that finance is one of the major complex factors leading to suspicion, disagreements, fighting, or worst still divorce in the home and many families have been shattered by lack of/ineffective management of it because of their misconception about the family’s financial officer. As a result of this, many questions have been raised: should couples maintain joint account? who manages the family’s finance for family wholeness? Could ineffective management of the family’s finance lead to couples unfaithfulness? In order to achieve the set objective(s) and answer the research questions, an explanatory survey research design was adopted. The study utilized the primary source of data by administering 80 questionnaires out of which 71 were duly completed and returned. Secondary data sources were consulted as well. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the result showed that although the husband is seen as the head of the family, decisions concerning the family (including management of family finances) should not be taken solely by him, but by both parties. If the family finance is not managed in an effective and efficient manner, it could lead to couples unfaithfulness to one another. Therefore, the husband or wife should not see the money which he or she earns as his or her personal money but the family’s finance/income which should be pooled together based on their agreement and also spent together.  However, they should not spend all their earnings no matter how little but, save some for the rainy day. This can only be achieved by proper planning/ budgeting. Keywords: family finance; financial management; family wholeness; planning and budgetin

Background: There is a recent resurgence in the use of intrauterine insemination (IUI) in Nigeria. However, there is a need for a rational use of the procedure so that couples do not waste time and money on ineffective therapy if it is not indicated. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify the possible prognostic factors affecting outcome of IUI among patients undergoing the procedure.Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective review of the case files and treatment protocols of fifty consecutive couples who had IUI procedure following the established diagnosis of Infertility at the Paramount Fertility Center of Paramount Specialist Hospital Ondo, Nigeria, over a period of 1 year (February 2016 to January 2017).Results: There were ten (20.0%) pregnancies recorded, of which three (6%) clients had first‑trimester miscarriages (between the 5th and 13th weeks), one (2%) had an ectopic pregnancy, whereas six (12%) were carried to the age of viability and delivered. Forty (80%) clients did not achieve pregnancy. The postwash concentration of sperm was noticed to be the only parameter significantly affecting the rate of pregnancy in our treatment cycles with P < 0.05. There was also a trend toward a reduction in pregnancy after the age of 40.Conclusion: This study shows that the postwash sperm count and age of the female have the most predictive value for IUI clinical pregnancy outcome in our center. Keywords: Infertility; intrauterine insemination; prognostic factor
