    Non-destructive testing of dissimilar friction stir welds

The Friction stir welds of 5754 aluminium alloy and C11000 copper were produced at different tool rotational speeds and feed rates. The tool rotational speed was varied between 600 and 1200 rpm while the feed rate was varied between 50 and 300 mm/min. The visual inspection and the x-ray radiographic testing techniques were employed to conduct the tests; these tests were conducted on the welds to ascertain the joint integrity before characterization to have an idea of the quality of the welds. No visual defects were observed on all the welds considered but the x-ray radiography technique revealed the presence of wormhole defects and discontinuities in some of the welds. It was found that the welds produced at 950 rpm with varied feed rates were the best quality welds produced and this was substantiated with the microstructural evaluation of the joint interface. It was found that these welds have good mixing and metallurgical bonding at the interfaces

    We perform analysis of direct numerical simulation (DNS) data of two flow cases: stratocumulus cloud-top (SCT) and convective boundary layer (CBL). We test different methods for turbulence kinetic energy dissipation rate (EDR) retrieval. Among others we investigate performance of a new, iterative method, proposed recently in Wacławczyk et al. (2017), where an analytical model for energy spectra in the dissipative range is needed. We argue, the new method has some advantages over the standard spectral retrieval techniques. To apply it, only the information on the signals’ cut-off wavelength is needed and it is not necessary to define the fitting range in the inertial part of the spectrum. With this, the new method could be a basis of a general algorithm for EDR retrieval, applicable to a wide range of different atmospheric data (e.g. from commercial aircrafts). Moreover, we investigate how the presence of anisotropy due to shear, buoyancy and external intermittency in the flow affects the EDR retrieval based on the classical K41 for isotropic turbulence (Kolmogorov, 1941). © 2019 International Symposium on Turbulence and Shear Flow Phenomena, TSFP.     Characterising the effect of laser metal deposited Ti6Al4V/Cu composites in simulated body fluid for biomedical application

    Ti6Al4V alloy has been known to have very excellent corrosion resistance due to the oxide layer formed on its surface. Due to this property, the alloy is found applicable for biomedical implants. Copper shows an excellent antimicrobial property and has been found to stabilize the immune system. In this study, laser metal deposition of Ti6Al4V powder and Cu powder on Ti6Al4V substrates were conducted by varying the laser power between 600 W and 1800 W while the scanning speed, the powder flow rate and the gas flow rate were kept constant. The surface behaviour and the morphologies of the composites were evaluated under the microscope and the SEM after soaking for 4 hours, 5 days and 2 weeks respectively. The simulated body fluid (hank’s solution) was maintained at normal body temperature of about 37±1oC. The surfaces showed fracture topography with porous bone-like structures and some trivial pitting were observed

    Adomian decomposition method for analytical solution of a continuous arithmetic Asian option pricing model

    One of the main issues of concern in financial mathematics has been a viable method for obtaining analytical solutions of the Black-Scholes model associated with Arithmetic Asian Option (AAO). In this paper, a proposed semi-analytical technique: Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM) is applied for the first time, for analytical solution of a continuous arithmetic Asian option model. The ADM gives the solution in explicit form with few iterations. The computational work involved is less. However, high level of accuracy is not neglected. The obtained solution conforms with those of Rogers and Shi (J. of Applied Probability 32: 1995, 1077-1088), and Elshegmani and Ahmad (ScienceAsia, 39S: 2013, 67–69). Thus, the proposed method is highly recommended for analytical solution of other versions of Asian option pricing models such as the geometric form for puts and calls, even in their time-fractional forms

    Effect of punch diameters on shear extrusion of 6063 aluminium alloy

    This paper reports the effect of punch diameters on the shear extrusion of 6063 Aluminium alloy. During the shear extrusion process, Aluminium billets of considerable diameter 30 mm and height 25 mm were inserted in a die hole and different punches of diameter 12 mm, 14 mm, 16 mm and 18 mm respectively were allowed to come in contact to perform the shear operation. The setup took place under a hydraulic press with maximum capacity of 600 kN. This work is aimed at studying the selection of the optimum punch diameter for shear extrusion using local groundnut oil as the lubricant. Different extrusion pressures were measured and the punch with a diameter of 18 mm gives the highest load of 77.7 kN while the punch with a diameter of 12 mm gives the lowest load of 51.2 kN. An indication shows that, an increase in the punch diameters led to an increase in the height of the extrudates and this in turn reduces the stress induced

    Effect of crystallographic orientation on the pitting corrosion resistance of laser surface melted AISI 304L austenitic stainless steel

    The localized corrosion behavior of laser surface melted 304L austenitic stainless steel was studied by potentiodynamic polarization test. The extent of improvement in corrosion resistance was governed by the preferred orientation and the percentage of delta ferrite present on the surface of the laser melted sample. It was established by orientation imaging microscopy that the highest pitting potential value was obtained when grains were oriented in the most close- packed [101] direction compared to the random distribution of the base metal and other laser surface melted samples oriented in [001] direction. The sample with lower percentage of ferrite had good pitting resistance
