From colonialism to date and through various development plans and adoption of various international development blueprints, the nature of the Nigerian state, has impacted negatively on the  processes and prospects of development efforts in Nigeria in such a way that the desired developmental outcomes have continued to elude the citizenry.  Employing the theoretical framework of dependency, rentier state and prebendalism, the paper contends that the nature of the Nigerian state which has always thwarted efforts towards development through bad governance characterized by corruption, may also act as obstacle towards realization of the Millennium goals. The paper, with the realization of only four years away from 2015 deadline, advocates a change in the character of the state, through improvement in exemplary leadership, socio-cultural value reorientation, effective democratization process whose features include sound legitimation footing, socio-economic empowerment, application of principles of rule of law, transparency and accountability amongst others, in order to enhance the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)

Local Content In Information Management: The Story of the Celebrated Content of the First University Library in Nigeria

This article is an opinion paper on the pride of place of the nationally and internationally patronised and hence, celebrated contents of the Kenneth Dike Library (KDL) of the University of Ibadan, the first university library in Nigeria. The work traced the history of the Library from inception till date, emphasising the rarity, age, uniqueness and the yet relevancy of its contents in the face of the modern and emerging Information and Communications Technologies. The contents discussed include print and non-print materials (for instance, electronic resources and the institution’s repository, among others), artefacts, realia, pictures, drawings, processes, services, capacity, architecture, management and personnel deployed in the main and branch libraries of the University of Ibadan Library System. The author proffered reasons why the KDL is perceived the best among other university libraries in Nigeria and highlighted ten ‘firsts’ recorded by the Library in recent time which have further enhanced its reputation as the first and the best. The work concluded with a call on the private sector and good spirited individuals to support the federal government and the University of Ibadan towards achieving all the laudable goals of the KDL for now and the future

Employee Perceptions of the Latest Nigerian Banking Reforms

    Get PDF
Research on reforms in the banking sector has investigated economic-related issues such as Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As), recapitalization and restructuring, among others; with little attention devoted to the human resource aspect.  Hence, the study examined: employees’ perception about M&As in relation to the reform. Stratifying 3 out 12 merged banks among the 25 recapitalized ones, 856 employees of Sterling (484), Skye (387) and Wema (413) banks were selected using systematic sampling technique. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the sample while Independent T-test was used to test the study’s hypotheses.  Findings showed that apart from nature of employment (whether permanent or non permanent), employees’ basic characteristics such as marital status, tenure or job status had no significant relationship with employee perception of the reform.  Though more on the positive side than negative, bank employees were mixed on their perception of the reform. The non permanent staff who were employed on temporary basis as contract, casual and seasonal staff did not express positive perception of the reform due mainly to their feelings of relative deprivation. Keywords: Banking Reform, .Globalization.  Mergers/Acquisitions,  Labour Relations.

Theoretical Modelling to Explain Lecturers’ Use of Educational Support Systems for Teaching in University-based Library Schools in Nigeria: Extending the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM).

Abstract This work is an attempt at theoretical modelling. The result of a search for a theoretical framework and a conceptual model to explain lecturers’ use of Educational Support Systems (ESS) for teaching in university-based library schools in Nigeria. The applicability, similarity and relevance of Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) were discussed. TAM was found to be the most appropriate framework for the research based on its variables and/or constructs; hence, a research model, an adaptation of TAM was drawn and used to guide the research. Based on the findings of the research, a new model tagged Library Educators’ ESS Use Model (LEEUM) was proposed to further the frontier of knowledge, generally and in Library and Information Science, particularly

MONETARY POLICY AND TELECOMMUNICATION OUTPUT IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
Different policies impact on the growth of the telecommunication sector in Nigeria. One of these policies which influence the expansion or contraction of the telecommunication output is monetary policy. To this end, this research examined the effect of monetary policy on telecommunication output in Nigeria. For the purpose of analysis, time series secondary data were sourced from Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) statistical bulletin covering the periods1986 to 2018. Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) technique was employed after examining the stationarity of the data series using Augmented Dickey-Fuller technique. The bound co-integration test revealed that there is long run equilibrium between the monetary policy variables employed and telecommunication output. The ARDL result revealed that money supply had significant and positive effect on telecommunication output in the short and long run; liquidity ratio produced an insignificant and negative relationship with telecommunication output in the short run and insignificant positive effect in the long run; exchange rate had insignificant negative effect in the short run and a significant positive effect on telecommunication output in the long run; consumer price index had significant negative influence on telecommunication outputboth in the short run and long run. The study concluded that monetary policy stimulates telecommunication output in Nigeria. Thus, it was recommended that the monetary authority should pursue an expansionary monetary policy to sustain the positive influence of money supply on telecommunication output in Nigeria while rolling out policy to reduce the liquidity ratio of banks in the short run but increase it in the long run so that the long term favourable effect of liquidity ratio can be felt on telecommunication output. &nbsp

The paper discusses the dissemination and use of indigenous knowledge. It highlighted the type and sources of indigenous knowledge in Nigeria. Means and tools for creating and exchanging indigenous knowledge, thelikely situations under which indigenous knowledge could be used and how indigenous knowledge can be disseminated were discussed. The paper concluded by making recommendations on how to promote thecreation, usage and transfer of indigenous knowledge in Nigeria

INTELLIGENT WIRELESS SENSOR BASED BOMB DETECTION: AN INTEGRATION QUALITY OF SERVICE MODEL FOR INTERNET OF THINGS PLATFORM

    Get PDF
Owing to the global security concerns, intelligent Wireless Sensor Networks (iWSN) have been a major outcome of technological breakthrough. It thus becomes a practical platform where the information about the real world could be obtained via data fusion and computational embedded hardware systems. This paper presents a new perspective to Bomb Detection Technology (BDT) using an integration model that is based on the Internet of Things (IoT)ideology. QoS performance evaluation of selected algorithms, that is, the LEACH, Direct, as well as, a proposed cluster head (CH) algorithm for event based sensing and communication within an IoT deployment context was undertaken. Detection of suicide bombers and their related security frontiers is addressed in the IoT integration processed at the network level. The obtained results validate the need to integrate WSN devices into the IoT stack. In this regard, the IoT based CH algorithm is proposed for efficient communication system and energy utilization in bomb detonation hardware designs
