Influence of the Thermal-force Effect on the Process of Hightemperature Synthesis of the Ni[3]Al Intermetallic Compound

In this work, the intermetallic compound Ni[3]Al was obtained by high-temperature synthesis under pressure at various values of the preliminary pressure on the initial powder mixture (3Ni+Al). The study of pressure-time and displacement-time diagrams gave a coherent picture of the synthesis passage over time. It was found that an increase of preliminary pressure leads to a decreasing of the powder compacts porosity. In this regard, the smallest displacement of the press plunger after initiating the synthesis reaction in the powder compact was observed at the highest value of the preliminary pressure on the compact. The role of preliminary pressure on the initial powder mixture in the process of the grain structure formation of the Ni[3]Al intermetallic compound synthesized under pressure was determined

Background. Dry eye disease is a multifactorial condition, which is characterized by impairment of tear film formation. Lacrimal glands metabolism plays a critical role in dry eye disease. Emotional stress may impair lacrimal glands function. Purpose. We aimed to study production of nitric oxide from constitutive and inducible NO-synthases, activity of arginases and oxidative stress markers in lacrimal glands of rats during modeling of water avoidance stress (WAS) and its correction by metformin and corvitin. Material and methods. We concluded our experiment on 36 adult male rats of Wistar line weighing 190-240 g. Animals were divided into 6 groups consisting from 6 animals each, namely: control group, WAS group, group of correction by metformin (200 mg/kg) and group of correction by corvitin (10 mg/kg) during WAS modeling. And two drug-control groups. Results. WAS leads to increased activity of inducible NO-synthase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and concentration of MDA by 1.59, 1.93, 1.97 and 1.28 times respectively. Metformin and corvitin decreased activity of inducible NO-synthase by 8.25 and 8.5 times respectively, concentration of MDA decreased by 1.35 and 1.26 times respectively. Activities of superoxide dismutase did not change after introduction of metformin and corvitin. Metformin decreased catalase activity by 1.47 and corvitin increased it by 1.55 times. Production of superoxide dropped during WAS by 1.59 times and was increased to level below or equal that of control animals with introduction of metformin and corvitin. Conclusion. Increased activity of inducible NO-synthase during WAS is a possible reason of tissue damage in lacrimal glands of rats. Introduction of metformin or corvitin during WAS are an effective means for correction of tissue damage in lacrimal glands of rats due to their ability to lower increased inducible NO-synthase activity

Survey of charge symmetry breaking operators for dd -> alpha pi0

The charge-symmetry-breaking amplitudes for the recently observed d d -> alpha pi0 reaction are investigated. Chiral perturbation theory is used to classify and identify the leading-order terms. Specific forms of the related one- and two-body tree level diagrams are derived. As a first step toward a full calculation, a few tree-level two-body diagrams are evaluated at each considered order, using a simplified set of d and alpha wave functions and a plane-wave approximation for the initial dd state. The leading-order pion-exchange term is shown to be suppressed in this model because of poor overlap of the initial and final states. The higher-order one-body and short-range (heavy-meson-exchange) amplitudes provide better matching between the initial and final states and therefore contribute significantly and coherently to the cross section. The consequences this might have for a full calculation, with realistic wave functions and a more complete set of amplitudes, are discussed.Comment: REVTeX 4, 35 pages, 8 eps figures, submitted to PR

First Measurement of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering on Argon

We report the first measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (\cevns) on argon using a liquid argon detector at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Spallation Neutron Source. Two independent analyses prefer \cevns over the background-only null hypothesis with greater than 3σ3\sigma significance. The measured cross section, averaged over the incident neutrino flux, is (2.2 ±\pm 0.7) ×\times1039^{-39} cm2^2 -- consistent with the standard model prediction. The neutron-number dependence of this result, together with that from our previous measurement on CsI, confirms the existence of the \cevns process and provides improved constraints on non-standard neutrino interactions.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures with 2 pages, 6 figures supplementary material V3: fixes to figs 3,4 V4: fix typo in table 1, V5: replaced missing appendix, V6: fix Eq 1, new fig 3, V7 final version, updated with final revision
