Intravenous urography, ultrasonography, and non-contrast spiral computed tomography have been used to diagnose ureteral calculi. We aimed to compare the accuracy of non-contrast spiral computed tomography with ultrasonography in the evaluation of patients with renal colic.Fourty-one patients with flank pain were examined with both computed tomography and ultrasonography over a period of 11 months. Findings of ultrasonography and computed tomography of 28 patients in whom üreteral stones were confirmed by standart methods were comparedUreteral calculi were diagnosed in 28 of 41 patients. Ureteral stones could be demonstrated in 18 patients by ultrasonography and in 27 patients by computed tomography. Ultrasonography showed 64.3% sensitivity and 100% specificity in the diagnosis of ureterolithiasis; computed tomography showed 96.4% and 100%, respectively. Spiral computed tomography is superior to ultrasonography in the demonstration of ureteral calculi in patients with renal colic. But because of higher cost and higher radiation dose, it should be reserved for symptomatic cases in whom ultrasonography is non-diagnostic

Ectopic Neurohypophysis in Patient with Pituitary Dwarfism: A Case Report

Ectopic neurohypophysis is an anomaly of the Pituitary gland whichmay be associated with short stature due to Growth hormone deficiency.MRI is the modality of choice in diagnosing this condition. We present acase of pituitary dwarfism and ectopic neurohypophysis with clinical andradiological findings. 21 year-old male admitted with short stature. Allhormones, except prolactin, of anterior hypophysis were low. Bright spotwas ectopically located at level of median eminence on enhanced MRI ofhypophysis and stalk of hypophysis was not observed. Ectopicneurohypophysis may be present with pituitary dwarfism. Cranial MRI maybe useful to investigate related pathologies in such cases

WOS: 000396489100010PubMed: 29844780It has been investigated the in-vitro antioxidant properties of ethanol extracts of the containedallantoin plants in this study. Contained-allantoined plant samples Plantago lanceolata, Plantago major, Robinia pseudoacacia, Platanus orientalis and Aesculus hippocastanum were tested at different concentrations. The antioxidant activities of plant samples were analysed by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method, cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), reducing power assay and beta-carotene bleaching method. Plantago major plant showed the highest antioxidant capacity compared to other plant extracts in results of the in-vitro assays including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method with 90.25 %, cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) with 1.789 %, reducing power assay (FRAP) with 1.321 % and beta-carotene bleaching method with 78.01 % in 1 mg/mL. The lowest antioxidant activity was determined in Robinia pseudoacacia plant. In conclusion, allantoin shows antioxidant properties and it has the positive effect on total antioxidant capacity.Scientific Research Project Found of Nigde University [FEB 2014/02-HIDEP]We thank to Scientific Research Project Found of Nigde University under the Project number FEB 2014/02-HIDEP for financial support of this work

Kartagener’s Syndrome is a rare congenital malformation andcharacterized by the triad of bronchiectasis, sinusitis, and situs inversus. The genetic disorder is at cilia. We presented our 13 years old patientdiagnosed as Kartagener’s syndrome with polysplenia by imaging findings. In recurrent airway infections, Kartagener’s syndrome must be kept in mindas one of the reasons

Volume changes in the gallbladder in association with various radiologic examinations.

PURPOSE: Our aim was to evaluate with sonography the volume changes of the gallbladder after intravenous administration of nonionic, iodinated contrast agents with or without ingestion of contrast agent or water. METHODS: A total of 191 patients received intravenous injection of 50 ml of nonionic contrast agent (Group A), intravenous injection of 100 ml of contrast medium (Group B), intravenous injection of 100 ml of contrast medium together with ingestion of 1000 ml of a dilute solution of contrast medium (Group C), or 1000 ml of water taken orally (Group D). The gallbladder volume was measured by ultrasonography in the fasting state in all groups, 15 minutes after intravenous injection of contrast medium in Groups A, B, and C and 30 minutes after water ingestion in Group D. RESULTS: In all groups, the volume of the gallbladder was statistically lower after the procedure than before. There was no significant difference among the groups in terms of this gallbladder volume change. CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous injection of nonionic, iodinated contrast medium or ingestion of water or a dilute solution of contrast medium for various radiological examinations results in contraction of the gallbladder. Contrast-enhanced radiological examinations may interfere with sonographic evaluation of the gallbladder. If necessary, gallbladder ultrasonographic examination should be repeated with the patient in a fasting state. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Clin Ultrasound 33:214-217, 2005

Spinal Kist Hidatik: Nadir Bir Olgu Sunumu Hydatid Cyst of the Spine: A Rare Case Report

    No full text
Hydatid cyst is a zoonotic disease that can affect multiple organs and is difficult to diagnose and treat. Spinal hydatid cyst (SHC) is a rare hydatid cyst involvement observed in 1% of all cases. It can induce various neurological symptoms depending on the region of the involvement. Paraplegia is one of the most prevalent neurological symptoms. In this case report, a 63-year-old male patient with bilateral lower extremity paraplegia was operated on by neurosurgery and diagnosed with SHC at the level of Th 11 vertebra in the pathological examination of surgically removed materials. Thus, we aimed to emphasize the significance of pathological and microbiological examination in the differential diagnosis of spinal disorders.

The aim of this study was to estimate the quality of life, depression and anxiety in patients with silicosis due to denim sandblasting. This study was conducted on 50 young male patients with silicosis and 30 controls. A socio-demographic data form, Short Form-36 (SF-36), the Beck depression inventory (BDI) and the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) were used to determine quality of life, depression and anxiety. The mean scores of SF-36, BDI and BAI were higher in the patients than in the controls. Correlation analysis revealed a strong negative correlation between all scales of SF-36 and BDI scores. Additionally, there was strong negative correlation between five scales of SF-36 and BAI scores. We suggest that silicosis might be detrimental to the quality of life and increase depression and anxiety in patients with silicosis due to denim sandblasting
