Background: Physiotherapy research concerning interventions for children with CP is often focused on collecting evidence of the superiority of particular therapeutic methods or treatment modalities. Articulating and documenting the use of theory, instrumentation and research design and the assumptions underlying physiotherapy research interventions are important. Physiotherapy interventions focusing on children with Cerebral Palsy should, according to the literature, be based on a functional and environmental perspective with task-specific functional activity, motor learning processes and Family-Centred Service i.e. to enhance motor ability and improve capacity so that the child can perform the tasks necessary to participate actively in everyday life. Thus, it is important to coordinate the norms and values of the physiotherapist with those of the family and child. The aim of this study was to describe how physiotherapists' experiences physiotherapy interventions for children with CP in scientific physiotherapy publications written by physiotherapists. Methods: A qualitative phenomenographic approach was used. Twenty-one scientific articles, found in PubMed, strategically chosen according to year of publication (2001-2009), modality, journals and country, were investigated. Results: Three qualitatively different descriptive categories were identified: A: Making it possible a functional-based intervention based on the biopsychosocial health paradigm, and the role of the physiotherapist as collaborative, interacting with the child and family in goal setting, intervention planning and evaluation, B: Making it work an impairment-based intervention built on a mixed health paradigm (biomedical and biopsychosocial), and the role of the physiotherapist as a coach, leading the goal setting, intervention planning and evaluation and instructing family members to carry out physiotherapist directed orders, and; C: Making it normal an impairment-based intervention built on a biomedical health paradigm, and the role of the physiotherapist as an authoritative expert who determine goals, intervention planning and evaluation. Conclusions: Different paradigms of health and disability lead to different approaches to physiotherapy which influence the whole intervention process regarding strategies for the assessment and treatment, all of which influence Family-Centred Service and the child's motor learning strategies. The results may deepen physiotherapists' understanding of how different paradigms of health influence the way in which various physiotherapy approaches in research seek to solve the challenge of CP

Investigation of the effects of pain on depression and health related quality of life in patients with primary fibromyalgia syndrome

Purpose: This study was planned to investigate the relationship between pain parameters and depression and Health- Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in patients with Primary Fibromyalgia Syndrome (PFMS). Material and methods: Fifty-nine patients who were diagnosed PFMS according to American College of Rheumatology criteria were included in our study. In patients with PFMS, we evaluated the pain intensity by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold and pressure pain tolerance by algometry, depression predictors by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and HRQoL by Nottingham Health Profile (NHP). Results: The mean values of BDI (11.67±7.58) showed that the subjects had a mild level of depression. A statistically significant correlation was found between pain parameters and depression and the level of HRQoL in patients with PFMS who was included in this study (p<0.05). Conclusion: Chronic widespread pain can cause important psychological problems and affects the HRQoL negatively. This study emphasized that there was a close relationship between pain intensity, threshold, tolerance, HRQoL and depression. These results are important when planning treatment programs for PFMS

Effects of Pilates exercises and connective tissue manipulation on pain and depression in females with fibromyalgia: A randomized controlled trial [Fibromiyaljili kadinlarda Pilates egzersizleri ve konnektif doku manipulasyonunun agri ve depresyon üzerine etkileri: Rastgele kontrollü çalişma]

Purpose: This study was carried out to show the effects of Pilates exercises (PE) and Connective Tissue Manipulation (CTM) on pain and depression in females with fibromyalgia (FM). Material and methods: Fifty-one women diagnosed as FM according to American College of Rheumatology criteria were included in this study. The subjects were divided into two groups, randomly; twenty seven FM subjects participated in a PE training program and 24 subjects were treated with CTM, three times a week for four weeks. Pain intensity was evaluated using visual analogue scale and depression predictors were assessed by Beck Depression Inventory. Results: Although the baseline scores of pain intensity and depression of the Pilates group were found to be worst compared to the CTM group, improvements were determined in both groups (p0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that these two approaches can be used to decrease pain intensity and depression symptoms in females with FM

ABSTRACT Purpose: To identify the effect of pregnancy on the development of external hemorrhoids and constipation. Subjects and methods: This pilot study involved 61 primigravid women without a history of perianal diseases. Each patient was examined and filled a questionnaire between the 11th and 14th gestational week prior to prenatal screening tests. Patients were re-examined and questioned in relation to perianal symptoms and hemorrhoidal changes again in the 24th and 37th gestational weeks. Results: A total of 5, 8, and 11 women had symptomatic external hemorrhoids with or without perianal complications in the 11-14th, 24th, and 37th gestational weeks, respectively. Meanwhile, 27, 25, and 29 women complained about constipation in the 11-14th, 24th, and 37th gestational weeks, respectively. Only 4 (6.6%) patients experienced painful hemorrhoids. The overall morbidity rate was 18% (11 cases). We found a statistically significant relationship between external hemorrhoids/perianal complications and gestation-induced constipation through logistic regression analysis (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Various risk factors and biological explanations exist for the high frequency of hemorrhoids during pregnancy. Because participants were primigravid women without a history of perianal complaints, findings suggest a direct effect of pregnancy itself on the development of external hemorrhoids/perianal symptoms

ANKOS Publisher Application System and Its Impact on the e-Resource Evaluation Process

The Publisher Application System (PAS) is a Web-based archiving and online evaluation system developed by the Database Evaluation Group (DEG), one of the working groups formed within the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS). The DEG was formed in 2008 to inquire and evaluate e-resources suited to the needs of the consortium; to follow up similar consortial activities worldwide as well as developments in connection with the scientific publishing industry; and to determine, implement, and improve pricing models in accordance with the prevailing economic, legal, and academic system. Development of the PAS was essential to ensure standardization and sustainability towards a more detailed and effective analysis of e-resources qualifying for evaluation by ANKOS. The PAS played an important part not only in establishing and defining the workflow of the DEG, but also in creating an archive of both the e-resources submitted to the consortium and the applicant publishers/agents submitting these resources. This article outlines the process that started with the foundation of the DEG through the formation of the PAS as well as the present setup of the system. It is also hoped that this case study will have a positive contribution to the processes being followed by the persons and the groups engaged in similar activities. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.
