    Algunas consideraciones éticas acerca de la medicalización de la mutilación/corte genital femenina (circuncisión femenina).

    According to each society’s condition the ethical attitude of the individual may be colored by the attitude of the society. It is therefore not surprising to find what is ethical in one society might not be ethical in another. Female Genital Cutting, as an example, is seen in some societies as a must and something good for the whole community in general and for girls in particular, while in others, it is seen as mutilation and violation of human rights. The practice of female genital cutting is a complex issue that ties the traditional gender roles, superstition, local concepts on health and sexuality, as well as several other social relations. Worldwide, an estimated 130 million girls and women have undergone FGC. The current paper examines medicalization of female genital cutting from ethical point of view. The paper discusses the issue in the following themes: definition of the practice, the justifications of the practice, the complications and lastly the ethical reflections. The paper argues that laws that prohibit the practice would not work, without wide socio-cultural change; any effort to eradicate the practice would not succeedDe acuerdo a las condiciones sociales la actitud ética del individuo puede ser matizada por la actitud de la sociedad. Por lo tanto no es sorprendente encontrar, que algo que es ético en una sociedad no lo sea para otra sociedad. La mutilación genital femenina, es un ejemplo de esto, ésta mutilación es vista en algunas sociedades como lo debido y algo bueno para toda la comunidad en general y para las niñas en particular; mientras que en otras sociedades, esto es visto como mutilación y violación de los derechos humanos. Esta práctica, es un aspecto complejo que ata los roles tradicionales de género, la superstición, los conceptos locales en cuanto a sexualidad, salud, así como otras relaciones sociales. En el mundo se tiene un estimado de 130 millones de niñas y mujeres que han sido sometidas a la mutilación genital femenina (FGC) El presente artículo examina la medicalización de ésta práctica, desde un punto de vista ético. Este documento discute el tópico en los siguientes temas : definición de la práctica, justificación de la misma, sus complicaciones y finalmente las reflexiones éticas. Este artículo argumenta que las leyes que prohiben esta práctica no funcionarían sin un amplio cambio sociocultural; cualquier esfuerzo para erradicar dicha práctica no será exitos

    Sorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions by nanolimestone from underground water samples from Tehama region of Saudi Arabia

    333-340Powdered nano limestone (NLS) has been investigated as an in-expensive adsorbent for removal of heavy toxic metals such as cadmium and lead from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments has been carried out, the favorable pH for maximum metals adsorption is found to be 6.8 for both. The surface area has increased in case of NLS up to 6.2 m2/g. The adsorption capacity calculated by Langmuir equation is found to be 75.1 mg/g for Cd (II) and 68.4 for Pb (II) ions at pH 6.8. The adsorption capacity has increased with temperature and the kinetics followed a First-order rate equation for both. The enthalpy change (ΔH0) is 25.4 J mol−1 for Cd (II) and 20.8 J mol−1 for Pb (II), while entropy change (ΔS0) is 41.6 J K−1 mol−1 for Cd (II) and 38.7 J K−1 mol−1 Pb (II), which indicate that adsorption process is endothermic and spontaneous in nature. About 25 collected samples of groundwater has been tested and found to be contaminated with cadmium and lead elements with different rates, with using NLS as adsorbent able to remove both metals from the samples. All of the results suggested that the NLS is excellent nano-adsorbents for cadmium and lead contaminated water samples

    The association between right ventricular function and exercise capacity for hypertensive patients

    Background: Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) would be used to evaluate right ventricular (RV) function in patients with arterial hypertension, and the link between RV dysfunction and exercise capacity was studied in the study population.Objective: To establish a correlation with exercise capability in the study group by using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) to evaluate RV function in patients with arterial hypertension.Patients and Methods: Patients with hypertension were surveyed in a cross-sectional research; those known and treated; whether controlled or not and patients who were recently discovered to be hypertensive. Ninety patients were included; gender and age were taken into account. A thorough examination was performed on each patient (TTE) as well as six minute walking distance (6MWD). For all we had a written informed consent prior to enrollment. Results: Patients with untreated and uncontrolled hypertension showed significantly reduced right ventricular systolic and diastolic functions compared to those with well-controlled hypertension. Patients with untreated or uncontrolled hypertension had significant (P <0.001) deterioration on S', wave and diastolic dysfunction parameters (E/A, DTt, E/e t and IVRT). Untreated and uncontrolled hypertension patients showed a significant decrease in 6MWD compared to the well-controlled individuals (P <0.001). Conclusion: Untreated or ineffectively treated hypertension individuals had considerably reduced right ventricular function and exercise capacity, according to our findings.     Detection and Identification of Helicobacter pullorum in Poultry Species in Upper Egypt

    This work aimed to detect, identify and study the epidemiology of Helicobacter pullorum in avian species in Upper Egypt. A total of 1800 samples, including cloacal swabs, cecal swabs and livers were collected from chickens, turkeys and ducks in five different governorates in Upper Egypt. Using conventional phenotypic methods for isolation and identification, Helicobacter pullorum could be identified only from chickens with percentage 39.33% and no presence of the organism in turkeys and ducks. Sixteen randomly selected phenotypically identified Helicobacter pullorum isolates were confirmed using PCR assay based on 16S rRNA gene. In conclusion, conventional phenotypic methods for detection and differentiation of Helicobacter pullorum are often hampered by many limitations, while molecular methods, and PCR, in particular, have marked an important step forward in bacterial diagnostics and can provide a sensitive and rapid alternative method for detection and identification and highlights the potential of PCR technology in routine detection and identification of pathogens

    Outcomes of deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in pediatric cardiac surgery: A single center experience

    AbstractBackgroundDeep hypothermic circulatory arrest (DHCA) is a technique used in the repair of complex congenital cardiac lesions that require aortic arch or pulmonary vein repair. DHCA has been linked to adverse outcomes and neurologic complications. Selective cerebral perfusion (SCP) may be added to DHCA to prevent neurological complication. Air embolism and hyperperfusion injury may be encountered. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of simple DHCA and to outline the early outcomes especially the neurological ones.MethodsTwenty nine patients underwent surgical repair of congenital cardiac lesion with DHCA at a single institution from January 2010 to November 2015. DHCA was conducted with a target esophageal temperature of 18° and placement of an ice pack on the head. No selective perfusion was done. Demographic, operative and postoperative data were reviewed. Mortality, any neurological complications including seizers, coma, and stroke were recorded.ResultsThe mean age was 20.6 ± 8.2 months (range: 9 days to 154 months). The majority were males (20, 69%). The mean weight was 5.57 ± 4.2 kg (range: 2.3–17.5 kg). DHCA time was 20.03 min (range 3–52 min). There were three (10.3%) deaths. Two deaths occurred after Norwood operation, and one after interrupted aortic arch repair. None of the deaths were related to neurological injury. None of the patients developed seizers, coma, abnormal movement or neurological deficits.ConclusionsSimple DHCA without SCP is a safe, expeditious and reliable method for brain protection during repair of complex cardiac lesions, with acceptable outcomes

    Assessment of the distal runoff in patients with long standing diabetes mellitus and lower limb ischemia: MDCTA versus DSA

    AbstractObjectiveThe purpose of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA) in comparison with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in patients with long standing diabetes mellitus and chronic lower limb ischemia.Subjects and methodsOne hundred patients with long standing DM and chronic limb ischemia underwent both CT angiography and DSA. The distal runoff of each lower limb was divided into 13 arterial segments. The status of each segment was graded as: 1, (normal or less than 10% stenosis); 2, (10–49% stenosis); 3, (50–99% stenosis); 4, occlusion. The effect of calcification on the diagnostic accuracy of CT angiography was evaluated. CTA findings were compared with DSA findings for each arterial segment. The sensitivity and specificity of CT angiography were determined using DSA as the gold standard.ResultsA total of 100 patients were included (mean age, 58years; 70% men). The sensitivity and specificity of CT angiography were significantly affected by the degree of vessel wall calcification, and increase the need for additional imaging.ConclusionVessel wall calcifications decrease the diagnostic accuracy of CT angiography in patients with long standing DM and peripheral arterial disease

    Caracterización de endemismos mediterráneos en la flora egipcia

    The Mediterranean Basin is the world’s second richest hotspot, and one of the most important locations on the planet for endemic taxa. However, there is no available up-to-date list of Mediterranean endemics. Available data are frequently insufficient or outdated. Therefore, this study aimed at delimiting the Mediterranean floristic region in Egypt, screening its Mediterranean endemics, and determining their habitats, life forms, flowering periods, dispersal types and phyto-geographical distribution. From a list of 275 Mediterranean endemic taxa in Egypt compiled from literature, this study reduced it to 57 taxa (including species, subspecies and varieties; 20.7%) belonging to 46 genera and 22 families. Fifteen major habitats harbored Mediterranean endemics in Egypt, with coastal dunes (17 taxa = 29.8%) and non-saline depressions (16 taxa = 28.1%) being the most represented. Moreover, the Mareotis (west) subsector was the richest (46 taxa = 80.7%). The largest number of taxa was recorded in North African sub-region (52 taxa = 91.2%), followed by Eastern (levant) sub-region (36 taxa = 63.2%). Therophytes were the most recorded life form, while ballochory was the most represented dispersal type. In conclusion, it is crucial to shed the light on Mediterranean endemics and provide an up-to-date documented database to help future management plan that support their conservation and sustainable use.La cuenca Mediterránea es el segundo hotspot más rico del mundo y uno de los lugares más importantes del planeta en taxones endémicos. Sin embargo, no existe una lista actualizada de taxones endémicos mediterráneos. Los datos disponibles son frecuentemente insuficientes o están desactualizados. Por tanto, nuestro objetivo fue delimitar la región florística mediterránea en Egipto, seleccionar sus plantas endémicas mediterráneas y determinar sus hábitats, formas de vida, periodos de floración, tipos de dispersión y distribución fitogeográfica. Partiendo de una lista preliminar de 275 taxones endémicos del Mediterráneo presentes en Egipto recopilada de la bibliografía, este estudio redujo ese número a 57 taxones (incluyendo especies, subespecies y variedades; 20.7%) pertenecientes a 46 géneros y 22 familias. Las plantas endémicas mediterráneas de Egipto viven en quince hábitats principales, siendo los más representativos las dunas costeras (17 taxones = 29.8%) y las depresiones no salinas (16 taxones = 28.1%). El subsector Mareotis (al oeste) fue el más rico (46 taxones = 80.7%), mientras que el mayor número de taxones se registró en la subregión del norte de África (52 taxones = 91.2%), seguida de la subregión del este (levante) (36 taxones = 63.2%). Los terófitos fueron la forma vital más registrada y la balocoria el tipo de dispersión más común. En conclusión, es crucial arrojar luz sobre las plantas endémicas del Mediterráneo y proporcionar una base de datos documentada y actualizada que ayude a planificar una gestión futura que promueva su conservación y uso sostenible

    Effect of different pretreatments on egyptian sugar-cane bagasse saccharification and bioethanol production

    AbstractSugar-cane processing generates large amount of bagasse. Disposal of bagasse is critical for both agricultural profitability and environmental protection. Sugar-cane bagasse is a renewable resource that can be used to produce ethanol.In this study, twelve microbial isolates, five bacteria, four yeasts and three filamentous fungi were isolated from sugar-cane bagasse. Bacterial and yeast isolates were selected for their ability to utilize different sugars and cellulose. Chipped and ground bagasse was subjected to different pretreatment methods; physically through steam treatment by autoclaving at 121°C and 1.5bar for 20min and/or different doses of gamma γ irradiation (50 and 70Mrad). Autoclaved pretreated bagasse was further biologically treated through the solid state fermentation process by different fungal isolates; F-66, F-94 and F-98 producing maximum total reducing sugars of 18.4., 26.1 and 20.4g/L, respectively.Separate biological hydrolysis and fermentation (SHF) process for bagasse was done by the two selected fungal isolates; Trichoderma viride F-94 and Aspergillus terreus F-98 and the two yeast isolates identified as Candida tropicalis Y-26 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y-39. SHF processes by F-94 and Y-26 produced 226kg of ethanol/ton bagasse while that of F-98 and Y-39 produced 185kg of ethanol/ton bagasse

    Differentiation of Infectious Bursal Disease Virus (IBDV) Strains in Experimentally Infected Chickens

    Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is an acute, highly contagious, and immunosuppressive avian disease caused by IBD virus (IBDV). Differentiation of IBDV strains is crucial for effective vaccination programs and epidemiological investigations. In this study, a combination of clinical, histopathological examinations, immunohistochemistry and indirect immunofluorescence techniques were used to differentiate different IBDV strains. Sixty three weeks old chickens were divided randomly into five equal groups. Chickens of four groups were inoculated orally with different strains of IBDV. Chickens of the fifth group were kept as a control. Three chickens per group were euthanized at 3, 7, 14, 21 days post-inoculation (dpi). Euthanized chickens subjected to autopsy and tissue samples were collected in 10% neutral-buffered formalin for histopathology, immunohistochimestry and immunoflrourescence. The results revealed that clinical examination and histopathology cannot be used alone for differentiation of IBDV strains, while immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence techniques are reliable tools for differentiation of IBDV strains

    Relationships between the Parity and Pelvimetry of Egyptian Buffalo Cows: Prediction of Dystocia and Estimation of Age

    Background: The current study aimed to determine the most strongly correlated variable of pelvimetry with the parity in our native breed Egyptian buffaloes. Methods: The study was conducted on 36 female buffaloes (nullipara, n=14, primipara n=6 and pluripara, n=16 with 2-4 births) aged between <15 months, n=15 and 65 months, n=21. The internal and external pelvic measurements were obtained using the rice pelvimeter and Freeman’s measuring tape. Results: Strong positive linear relationships were found for the distance between ischiatic tuberosities and the distance between sacral tubercles with the correlation coefficients of 0.64 and 0.62, respectively. The conjugate diameter increased progressively with the age and number of births, with a correlation coefficient of 0.96. The pelvic area had a very strong positive linear relationship with a correlation coefficient of 0.89. The linear combination of the predictor variable (conjugate diameter), to predict the number of birth was developed successfully. Conclusion: The strong relationship between the conjugate diameter and the number of births could be employed to predict the dystocia and estimate the age of female buffalo. Furthermore, these findings could be aid paleontologists in studying buffalo fossils
