Homosexual Subculture in Classical Athens: An Analysis of Unconventional Same-sex Relationships in the Speech of Lysias Against Simon

    Get PDF
The genre of Athenian forensic oratory is valuable evidence for evaluating Greek society’s perception of men involved in long-standing homosexual relationships. A close examination of such relationships reveals that some citizen status males dispensed with the obligation of marriage and formed an enduring companionship with a socially marginalized man. Much of the scholarship on Greek homosexuality, however, ignores the role of subaltern groups in same-sex relationships and denies the existence of homosexual practices beyond the codified structures of the well-known pederastic relationship model. Applying a multidisciplinary lens to Lysias’ speech Against Simon, this MRP considers how its narrative on same-sex desire, relationships, shame, and masculinity reveals a complex and diverse image of Greek homosexuality. By focusing on the participation of a subaltern man, I argue that a homosexual identity and subculture existed in classical Athens

The birth of a child with an intellectual disability puts varying amount of pressure on nuclear and extended families. The purpose of this research paper is to explore the experiences of parents having children with intellectual disability in nuclear and extended families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). For this purpose, 12 parents for in-depth interviews and 24 parents for three focus group discussions were selected. Furthermore, in-charge from each center was also interviewed. It was found that parents belonging to extended family structure comparatively feel relax due to family support in managing the child’s care and household activities. On the other hand, institutional support can reduce the burden of child care on parents resides in nuclear family structure

Role of Teacher in Personal Learning Environments

    Get PDF
This paper aims to discuss the changing roles and competencies of a teacher in context of prevailing developments accomplished by the vast availability of social software, which have made easy the development of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs). This has been accomplished by an in-depth review of the literature on teacher’s socially situated competencies and roles with regard to the tasks and guidance they provide to students shape their PLEs. Review process provides an insight of PLE research studies, constructivist learning theories, and teacher changing roles. The results of this study outline the roles that portray the importance of teacher competencies as role in Planning and Design, Instruction and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Management and Administration, and Use of Technology

Diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease Using Machine Learning Algorithm

    Get PDF
A large percentage of people globally suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD), a serious health concern. Effective diagnosis, treatment, and referral of CKD depend heavily on early identification and prediction of the disease. However, it is difficult to evaluate and derive significant insights from health data due to its vast and complicated nature. Engineers and medical researchers are using data mining techniques and machine learning algorithms to create predictive models for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in an effort to address this issue. The goal of this research is to create and validate predictive models for chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on a variety of clinical factors, including albuminuria, age, diet, eGFR, and pre-existing medical problems. The objective is to estimate the likelihood of renal failure, which may necessitate kidney dialysis or a transplant, and to evaluate the degree of kidney disease. With the use of this knowledge, patients and healthcare providers should be able to make well-informed decisions about diagnosis, treatment, and lifestyle changes. Patterns in the gathered data can be found, and future incidence of CKD or other related diseases can be predicted, by utilising MLT such as ANN and data mining techniques. Finding novel characteristics linked to the onset of renal disease and adding more trustworthy data from CKD patients. The best algorithm to categorise the data as CKD or NOT_CKD is chosen throughout the design process, and the data is then classified according to this differentiation. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which offers important details about the patient's current kidney function, is used to classify cases of chronic kidney disease. By combining complete patient data with machine learning algorithms, this research advances the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and improves patient outcomes

This paper is based on the history of Panchali (Khah/Poguli). It demarcates Panchali speaking areas and also gives its number of speakers. It also mentions various alternate names of Panchali language. The different types of Panchali languages are discussed. In this paper the dialects of Panchali language are also mentioned and their areas are also demarcated. The importance of Panchali languages has been discussed with its historical perspectives. There is a little literature available in this language

The Socio-Economic Impact of HIV/AIDS in Bangladesh: The Role of Public Administration in Response to HIV/AIDS

    Get PDF
As the Human Immuno- Deficiency Virus, the cause of AIDS, continues to spread in many parts of the world, women are now said to constitute an increasingly large proportion of those infected worldwide. This statistic has mainly been attributed to the fact that until lately, women did not have an independent method of protection by which they could help shield themselves from both pregnancy and infection of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Shakeel Ahmed lbne Mahmood is senior administrative officer, ICDDR, B-lnternational Center for Health and Population Research, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Currently, he is enrolled in the University of Maine\u27s MPA program

    Doctors'self-prescribing behavior: an exploratory study

    Get PDF
Background: Self-prescribing among doctors is common. But the General Medical Council (GMC) and American Medical Council recommend that doctors should avoid prescribing for themselves, and close family members. Self-prescribing can lead to serious consequences.  The present study reports the prevalence and pattern of self-prescribing among doctors working in various healthcare facilities of Kashmir Valley. Methods: Pre-validated questionnaires were sent to 200 doctors selected by convenience sampling. Only 184 returned the completely filled questionnaires. Results: At which 95.7% male doctors and 97.8% female doctors were self-prescribing. 100% doctors above the age of 40 years were self-prescribing. 100% post graduate students and consultants were practicing self-prescribing. 98.0% of those active as doctors for 1-5 years and 95.1% of those active for more than five years were self-prescribing. 60.7% doctors cited convenience, 40.4% time saving, 27.0% quick relief, 60.7% confidence, 14.6% low cost of treatment, and 15.7% crowd avoidance as a reason for self-prescribing. Major diseases self-treated were: headache (78.7%), respiratory symptoms (79.8%), fever (53.9%) and pain syndromes (31.5%). Major drugs used were: analgesics (80.9%), antipyretics (68.5%), antibiotics (58.4%), decongestants (49.4%) and antispasmodics (33.7%).Conclusions: The observed prevalence of self-prescribing was very high in this study. The issue of self-prescribing is common and requires attention

Glucocorticoids can cause allergic reaction in rare cases. A ten year old boy, known asthmatic, was treated with intramuscular injection of glucocorticoids, followed by nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. His lips turned pale along with palpitation and light headache. His right eye lid and lower lip were swollen. Heart rate was 177/min, and BP was 66/46 mmHg,. Patient spontaneously improved and symptoms resolved. IV fluids bolus, antihistamines or epinephrine were not required. The case was seen in September 2012
