The pollutants due to effect on the immune system of fish increase fish sensitivity to pathogens. Diazinon is one of the most used organophosphates pesticide in many agricultural areas. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of diazinon on the immune system of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and application of Milk thistle plant, Vitis vinifera extract to reduce the adverse effects of this pesticide on its immune system. The reduction in the level of plasma peroxides, IgM, total complement and lysozyme were observed in fish exposed to diazinon showing its effect on the fish's immune system. No significant difference between control group and fish fed by Milk thistle plant extract and exposed to diazinon can reflect protective impact of Milk thistle plant extract on the immune system of rainbow trout by eliminating the free radicals and boosting the immune system

Maternal Dietary Pattern with an Emphasis on Child Growth Pattern and Exclusive Breastfeeding Duration

Background: maternal nutrition and breast milk nutrient concentration are associated with infant's growth. Enhanced knowledge encourages mothers to breast feed for the sake of optimizing growth and development. Methods: the current study was performed longitudinally in some rural areas, south of Iran, from birth to six months. Out of 319 candidates with serial anthropometric measurements of an infant, including weight, height, and head circumference at four times (birth, two, four, and six months ), 195 were included in the multivariate regression model (total measurements, n=776) to construct the pattern of growth. Then, information regarding demographic background, lactation status and infant supplementation intake status, feeding practices, maternal anthropometric measurements, and food frequency questionnaire were collected from mothers and their children during six months in two rural health centers. Results: The most important association between dietary factors and infant anthropometrics (weight, height, and head circumference) involved Factor2 vegetables, including leafy vegetables, tomato, onion and garlic, (weight β=0.35 95%CI 0.27 - 0.44, length β=3.82 95%CI 3.42 - 4.22, head circumference β=2.55 95%CI 2.32 - 2.79) and Factor1 fruit, including orange, kiwi, cherries, watermelon, date, and grapes) (weight β=0.117 95%CI 0.04-0.189, length β=0.59 95%CI 0.257-0.929, head circumference β=0.307 95% CI 0.108-0.507), respectively. Generalized Estimation Equation model revealed that Factor2 dairy (including low fat milk, yogurt and dough) significantly contributed to weight growth velocity (β=-0.009 95% CI -0.016 - 0.001). Conclusion: a dietary habit of fruit and vegetables, which are rich in bioactive components by breast feed mother showed better growth for infants. As growth is multifactorial, maternal nutrition and breastfeeding duration is a simple modifiable factor which can affect the subsequent growth and development of the child during the first six months. Key words: exclusive breastfeeding, growth, anthropometric measures, maternal nutrition, and multivariate multiple regression

The Impact of Several Plant Extracts and Essential Oils on Pistachio Psylla (Agonoscena pistaciae) and Its Natural Enemy, Chrysoperla carnea

    Get PDF
The common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae Burckhardt and Lauterer (Hem.: Aphalaridae), is one of the most important pests of pistachio orchards in Iran. Green lacewing, Chrysoperlacarnea, as a general predator found abundantly in Iranian pistachio gardens, loses its performance under the impression of pesticides spraying. Nowadays, considering environmental pollutions, human health and the importance of healthy and organic nutrition, extensive researches are carried out around the world in order to replace the synthetic products with plant materials. In this study, the mortality effect of two ethanol extracts of Tribulus terrestris and Tagetes erecta and two essential oils of Mentha pulegium and Rosmarinus officinalis were studied on A. pistaciae and its natural enemy C. carnea. The results showed that, although essential oils do not have appreciable effect on mortality of this psylla, but the extracts have high mortality potential on psylla nymphs, especially on N1 nymphs and the low influence on 1-2 days green lacewing larvae. The plant extracts and essential oils have not effect on 5-6 days green lacewing larvae. The results show that the plant derived chemicals and ethanol have not negative effect on hatching rate of the natural enemy. Among these treatments, R. officinalis essential oil has negative effect on eggs hatching rate, so its use is not recommended. Therefore with no impact of plant material on natural enemies, we can use green lacewing and herbal extracts in integrated pest control

Introduction: The proportion of older adults in the population continues to grow in the developing countries. In addition, persons at or over the age of 60 years have decreased quality of life in geriartrics because of several factors, such as low physical activity and impairment in mobility. This study was performed to assess the effect of group-based exercise program on physical functional independency in order to finally increase the quality of life in older adults. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in old women and men in 2005-2007. In this study, 50 elderly men and women were randomly divided into two groups experimental (25) and control (25).Group-based exercise program was administrated to the individuals of experimental group for 8 weeks (3 time a week) and subsequently using SF-36 questionnaire, the level of quality of life was measured in the two groups at the beginning and the end of the study. The data was analyzed using manvitni , chi-square and nonparametric tests. Results: Using group-based exercise program, increase in mean level of quality of life in different dimensions physical functional, role functional, pain, general health, emotional well-being, social functional , emotional functional and mental health was statistically significant(p0.01). Conclusion: Our study results showed that use of a regular and prolonged exercise program can increase the level of quality of life in older adults in different dimensions

Background: Children with thalassemia do not have favorable psychological health. Today, the use of different therapeutic regimes for caregivers with thalassemia has increased life expectancy; however, these patients have other various needs and requirements such as constant professional training. The aim of the present study was to explain stress management in caregivers with thalassemia children. Materials and Methods: The method applied in this study was phenomenological qualitative research with conventional content analysis. This study was done in 2016-2017 in Shahrekord, Iran. A total of 15 participants, including 10 mothers, 1 grandmother, and 4 fathers participated purposely in this study. There were two sessions of interviews each of which lasted for 30 minutes. The content of interview was recorded and analyzed through conventional content analysis method after documentation. Results: Following content analysis, three categories were obtained: seeking for hope included two subcategories of seeking for hope and trusting in God, seeking for information included two subcategories of seeking for information from parents and seeking for information from physician and nurse, and seeking for new treatment included two subcategories of seeking for new treatment and seeking for transplant. Conclusion: This findings of the present study showed that planners and healthcare team can contribute caregivers of thalassemic children in coping with this disease using three adaptation approaches; that is, offering caregivers hope and providing them with proper information about the disease and treatments

Introduction: Amongst other problems, dialysis patients also present mental and psychological problems. Objectives: In this study, we investigated the effect of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) on quality of life and self-efficacy in hemodialysis patients. Patients and Methods: In a descriptive study, 50 hemodialysis patients undergoing dialysis in Hajar hospital were randomly selected and divided into two groups of experimental and control. The experimental group attended 2 to 2.5 hours treatment sessions according to the MBCT program. Before the intervention and two months after, the outcomes of the study, regarded as, quality of life and self-efficacy were evaluated using the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Sherer et al's General Self-efficacy Scale, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t test, paired t test, and Wilcoxon test in the Stata software. Results: The results indicated that 2 months after intervention, a decrease of 2.05 points in mean score for quality of life in the control group and an increase of 10.30 points in the intervention group at P 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the MBCT program resulted in an increase in the mean scores for quality of life and self-efficacy in hemodialysis patients
