Pool boiling on modified surfaces using R-123

    Get PDF
This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Saturated pool boiling of R-123 was investigated for five horizontal copper surfaces modified by different treatments, namely, an emery-polished surface, a fine sandblasted surface, a rough sandblasted surface, an electron beam-enhanced surface, and a sintered surface. Each 40-mm-diameter heating surface formed the upper face of an oxygen-free copper block, electrically heated by embedded cartridge heaters. The experiments were performed from the natural convection regime through nucleate boiling up to the critical heat flux, with both increasing and decreasing heat flux, at 1.01 bar, and additionally at 2 bar and 4 bar for the emery-polished surface. Significant enhancement of heat transfer with increasing surface modification was demonstrated, particularly for the electron beam-enhanced and sintered surfaces. The emery-polished and sandblasted surface results are compared with nucleate boiling correlations and other published data. © 2014 Syed W. Ahmad, John S. Lewis, Ryan J. McGlen, and Tassos G. On universality of the coupling of neutrinos to Z

We employ an effective Lagrangian approach and use LEP data to place severe bounds on universality violations of the couplings of νe\nu_e, νμ\nu_\mu, and ντ\nu_\tau to the ZZ boson. Our results justify the assumption of universality in these couplings that is usually made, as for example in the analysis of solar neutrinos detected at SNO.Comment: 8 pages, no figures. Design of Monopole Antennas for UWB Applications

    Get PDF
Presented are the design method, equations, and results of a broadband monopole antenna for UWB applications. The antenna is a fat monopole; made of rectangular and circular patches. Measured results show a passband of 2.8–11.97 GHz. Parametric studies of the effects of the ground plane and the gap between the radiating element and the ground plane were done and their results given. The gain and efficiency are also provided; with average values of 4.34 dBi and 96% respectively. The obtained radiation patterns show bi-directional patterns in the E-plane and omni-directional patterns in the H-plane

Lifetime Constraints for Late Dark Matter Decay

We consider a class of late-decaying dark-matter models, in which a dark matter particle decays to a heavy stable daughter of approximately the same mass, together with one or more relativistic particles which carry away only a small fraction of the parent rest mass. Such decays can affect galactic halo structure and evolution, and have been invoked as a remedy to some of the small scale structure-formation problems of cold dark matter. There are existing stringent limits on the dark matter lifetime if the decays produce photons. By considering examples in which the relativistic decay products instead consist of neutrinos or electron-position pairs, we derive stringent limits on these scenarios for a wide range of dark matter masses. We thus eliminate a sizable portion of the parameter space for these late decay models if the dominant decay channel involves Standard Model final states.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Mapping of soil banks using ERTS-1 pictures

    Get PDF
Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS-1) pictures of different wavelengths (MSS 4,5,6,7) were used in the study of two strip mine areas in southeastern Ohio. The first area was near Piedmont Lake and the second area was near New Lexington. Prints were examined under a binocular microscope and the gray tone was correlated with the actual ground conditions at several sites. For the New Lexington area, color infrared pictures taken at an elevation of 18,000 feet were also used for correlation with the ERTS-1 imagery. The results indicate that MSS 5 and 7 are most useful in defining the stripped land and show that the hydrological and soil characteristics are remarkably different than the surrounding lands

Zakat has strategic potential to be developed into an instrument of income distribution. In Indonesia, its potential is not professionally managed. This paper examines the reality of the optimization of zakat in Indonesia to know the development of its management, its practice management and its distribution as well as the role of the State using charity funds to alleviate poverty. In the matter of charity, maximizing both the state\u27s role as regulator to revise Act No. 38 of 1999 on Zakat Management, as a facilitator for the optimization of application management functions, the use of information technology in the management of alms and as a motivator for socialization, education, guidance, and conscious movement of zakat and the role of the state as a distributor to apply the model of equal distribution and eight channels growth for productive activities is very significant to note.

Automatic generation of human machine interface screens from component-based reconfigurable virtual manufacturing cell

    Get PDF
Increasing complexity and decreasing time-tomarket require changes in the traditional way of building automation systems. The paper describes a novel approach to automatically generate the Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens for component-based manufacturing cells based on their corresponding virtual models. Manufacturing cells are first prototyped and commissioned within a virtual engineering environment to validate and optimise the control behaviour. A framework for reusing the embedded control information in the virtual models to automatically generate the HMI screens is proposed. Finally, for proof of concept, the proposed solution is implemented and tested on a test rig

The performance of modified jatropha-based nanofluid during turning process

    Get PDF
The industry's extensive use of petroleum-based metalworking fluid (MWF) harms the environment and humans. The production of bio-based MWF, especially from crude jatropha oil (CJO), has therefore taken numerous initiatives. This aimed to formulate newly modified jatropha oil (MJO) with the addition of 0.05wt.% hBN and 0.05wt.% MoS2 as the nanofluid for MWF. The performance of the nanofluids was determined through the turning process in terms of cutting temperature, workpiece surface roughness, tool life and tool wear of the tool lubricated by the nanofluids. The performance of the nanofluid samples was compared with the synthetic ester (SE). From the results, after conducted 100mm axial cutting length MJO+hBN+MoS2 recorded the lowest in cutting temperature and surface roughness compared to all samples. The result shows that MJO+hBN+MoS2 has longer tool life (6500mm) compared to SE (6000mm). Abrasion and adhesion were observed as the dominant tool wear mechanism. In conclusion, MJO+hBN+MoS2 shows better machining performance and has the potential to be an environmentally friendly metalworking fluid
