This paper, which is based on field research in Doron Baga and Maiduguri, attempts to describe and analyse the main determinants of the fish trade in North-east Nigeria with Doron Baga as the main focus. Fish is a significant source of income and a principal trade commodity, bringing together the remote fishing community of North-east Nigeria with the major urban centres of the Southern part of the country. In order to get an insight into the workings of the fish trade, indepth interviews were conducted with fatoma (or dealers), traders and transporters in Doron Baga and Maiduguri. In addition, the authors utilised documentary sources to supplement the data collected from the field. For instance, a number of postgraduate dissertations, archival accounts as well as journal articles and books were consulted. After giving a brief introduction of the development of the long distance trade in fish, the paper discusses the role of the fatoma, means of transportation, value and volume of the trade. The study focuses on the period 1997-1999, during which substantial part of the data used were collected

Likert Scale Development: Construction and Evaluation of Home Environment Scale

    Get PDF
This paper is based on the construction and evaluation of home environment scale for senior secondary school students. In this paper an attempt was made to evaluate validity, reliability and to determine the appropriate standards to interpret the results of home environment scale. The scale includes 71 items to measure ten dimensions of home environment. Content validity was evaluated by more than 20 experts and validity was calculated by correlation between the score of each dimension and total score of the scale. To know the discrimination validity for each dimension of the test, ‘t’ test for two independent samples was used (high group and low group). The reliability of the scale was tested by calculating Alpha Coefficients. Overall it is concluded that the scale has good construct and discrimination validity. Moreover, all the values of reliability coefficient for each dimension are highly significant. Keywords: Construction. Evaluation, Home Environment, Likert Scale, Reliability, Validity

This study aims to see the differences in students' mathematical reflective thinking ability between students which is taught with the Creative Problem Solving learning model and the Discovery Learning learning model if it is viewed from gender. The Data Analysis of research result used two-way Anova to see the effect of gender and learning models on students' mathematical reflective thinking ability. After finding the effect of Gender and the learning model, the advanced test of post-Anova by using the Scheffe’ method. The results are as the following : There is Gender influence on students' mathematical reflective thinking ability, there is an influence of the learning model on students' mathematical reflective thinking ability, there is no interaction between Gender and learning models on students' mathematical reflective thinking ability and post-Anova test with Scheffe’'s method, the results show that there are differences in mathematical reflective thinking ability between the Creative Problem Solving model and the Discovery Learning model. (R1488) Transformation of Glucokinase under Variable Rate Constants and Thermal Conditions: A Mathematical Model

    Get PDF
The glucokinase (GK) in cells plays a pivotal role in the regulation of carbohydrate metabolism and acts as a sensor of glucose. It helps us to control glucose levels during fast and food intake conditions through triggering shifts in metabolism or cell functions. Various forms of hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia occur due to the transformations of the gene of the Glucokinase. The mathematical modelling of enzyme dynamics is an emerging research area to serve its role in biological investigations. Thus, it is imperative to establish a mathematical model to understand the kinetics of native and denatured forms of enzyme-GK under thermal stress with respect to time. The formulation of the current model is based on the number of non-linear ordinary differential equations with suitable initial and boundary conditions. The transformations of glucokinase were studied using mathematical and computational simulations in order to estimate the concentration of native and denatured enzyme forms with respect to different rate constants and under various thermal changes. The results obtained in this model were verified with the empirical outcome of Sanchez Ruiz et al. and Weinhouse for the validity and efficacy of the formulated model

Experimental investigation on synthesis, characterization, stability, thermo-physical properties and rheological behavior of MWCNTs-kapok seed oil based nanofluid

Several researchers devoted their efforts for the thermal conductivity enhancement of Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) based nanofluids as CNTs have excellent thermal properties. However, limited research is reported on the detailed thermo-physical properties of CNTs and oil based nanofluids. In this work, the one-step method synthesis of a new MWCNTs-Kapok seed oil based nanofluid at constant nanoparticle concentration (0.1 wt./wt.) is reported. The nanofluid is characterized by FESEM, FTIR, visual stability analysis and thermophysical properties are experimentally measured. The viscosity found in the range of (0.049–10.101ÂżPa·s), the thermal conductivity of (0.165–0.207ÂżW/m·K) and enhancement of thermal conductivity (6.1538%) were observed. Moreover, the viscosity decreases, and thermal conductivity increases with an increase in temperature. The experimentally obtained data are found in agreement with existing models and modified correlations. The rheological behavior showed that nanofluid is non-Newtonian in nature and exhibiting shear thinning or pseudo plastic behavior.Preprin

This research is entitled “Politeness Strategy and Representative Speech Acts in Courtroom Debate in the Movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose: A Pragmatic Study”. In this research the writer analyzes the applications of politeness strategies in representative speech acts. The aims of this research is to describe the kinds of politeness strategies performed in representative speech acts in the courtroom debate of the studied movie, explain how the strategies are applied, and describe the effects of the applications of the strategies. In order to do so, the writer collected data from the analyzed movie, classified the data according to the categories of the strategies, and analyzed the effects. As the consequence of the research method, the writer used theories on politeness strategies, especially Brown and Levinson’s. The conducted analysis results in the elaborations of ten items in the category of bald on record strategy, five items of the negative politeness strategy, and none of the off record strategy. From the analysis the writer concludes that the sub-strategy used in the category of bald on record strategy is without minimizing Face Threatening Act (FTA), there are three sub-strategies of positive politeness strategy, namely intensifying interest, agreement, and sympathy by giving intonation through the speech act, avoiding disagreement by showing agreement, and involving speech partner in a certain activity, while there is not any application of the negative politeness strategy and the off record politeness strategy. The writer concludes that the implication of the politeness strategies is performed by using certain words, phrases, or sentences suitable to the intention and the capacity of the speaker, and that such implication brings significant impact on the hearer. Key words: politeness strategy, representative speech ac
