University Teknologi PETRONAS nowadays has been using internet as a tool of education and learning. Through the development of web portal and content management portal such as E-learning, PRISM and UTP official website, these will allow students, lecturers and UTP staffs to interact which other, exchange learning materials, course registration, hostel registration and many other more. UTP offers numerous of platforms for information dissemination namely UTP official website and E-Learning but they are focused more towards undergraduate studies. In fact, UTP does not have a dedicated web portal for postgraduate studies. It is a disadvantage for not having postgraduate web portal because most of the research universities in Malaysia have their own web portal for postgraduate studies. As a proposed solution to address this problem, the author will develop a web portal with the addition of content management dedicated for postgraduate studies. The web portal will be referred to as UTP Postgraduate Portal (UPP) that will act as online medium for postgraduate students and have numerous functionalities. The main web portal will have functionalities such as to display information regarding the courses offered in UTP and login function for student and administration on the content management section and view public news provided by the Centre for Graduate Studies. For the content management section, there are several functionalities such as update and display of internal news and information regarding postgraduate studies, upload and download form or learning materials and forum for the interaction between students and Centre for Graduate Studies staff. The research methods used will be constructive and exploratory to gather data such as distributed online survey to the officers of Centre for Graduate studies as well with the postgraduate students. Benchmarking is also one of the research method used by the author to gather data and information. At the end of the research, web prototypes for postgraduate studies portal will be developed as a prove of concept for this projec

Higgs quartic coupling and neutrino sector evolution in 2UED models

Two compact universal extra dimensional models are an interesting class of models for different theoretical and phenomenological issues, such as the justification of having three standard model fermion families, suppression of proton decay rate, dark matter parity from relics of the 6-dimensional Lorentz symmetry, origin of masses and mixings in the standard model. However, these theories are merely effective ones, with typically a reduced range of validity in their energy scale. We explore two limiting cases of the three standard model generations all propagating in the bulk or all localised to a brane, from the point of view of renormalisation group equation evolutions for the Higgs sector and for the neutrino sector of these models. The recent experimental results of the Higgs boson from the LHC allow, in some scenarios, stronger constraints on the cut-off scale to be placed, from the requirement of the stability of the Higgs potential.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in European Physical Journal C. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1306.485

Unity and Closure through Performatism: A Possible Replacement of Postmodernism?

    Get PDF
Through the use of aesthetically mediated devices, the contemporary literary theory is argued, by Raoul Eshelman, to have ushered into a new epoch making era of performatism by assigning unity and closure to the current art works in the world. Eshelman attempts to apply his newly formed concept in different art works ranging from literary writings to architecture, movies and paintings in his book, Performatism or End of Postmodernism in 2008. This paper is an attempt to overview and analyse the concept of Performatism by applying it, as an example, on a recent Pakistani narrative The Party Worker by Mohsin Hamid Shahid. The rationale for the selection of this work is owing to the claim by Eshelman that Performatism has seeped into art works globally. The textual analysis of the selected novel signifies that Eshelman’s view of contemporary state of literary theory cannot be neglected as there are attempts at unification and closure of the narratives, a departure from postmodern disintegration and fragmentation. However, the imposition of unity and closure owing a great deal to the use of aesthetic devices and authoriality through the strategic maneuvering by the writer poses a threat to the smooth shifting from postmodernism to performatism.Through the use of aesthetically mediated devices, the contemporary literary theory is argued, by Raoul Eshelman, to have ushered into a new epoch-making era of performatism by assigning unity and closure to the current art works in the world. Scalable Distributed DNN Training using TensorFlow and CUDA-Aware MPI: Characterization, Designs, and Performance Evaluation

TensorFlow has been the most widely adopted Machine/Deep Learning framework. However, little exists in the literature that provides a thorough understanding of the capabilities which TensorFlow offers for the distributed training of large ML/DL models that need computation and communication at scale. Most commonly used distributed training approaches for TF can be categorized as follows: 1) Google Remote Procedure Call (gRPC), 2) gRPC+X: X=(InfiniBand Verbs, Message Passing Interface, and GPUDirect RDMA), and 3) No-gRPC: Baidu Allreduce with MPI, Horovod with MPI, and Horovod with NVIDIA NCCL. In this paper, we provide an in-depth performance characterization and analysis of these distributed training approaches on various GPU clusters including the Piz Daint system (6 on Top500). We perform experiments to gain novel insights along the following vectors: 1) Application-level scalability of DNN training, 2) Effect of Batch Size on scaling efficiency, 3) Impact of the MPI library used for no-gRPC approaches, and 4) Type and size of DNN architectures. Based on these experiments, we present two key insights: 1) Overall, No-gRPC designs achieve better performance compared to gRPC-based approaches for most configurations, and 2) The performance of No-gRPC is heavily influenced by the gradient aggregation using Allreduce. Finally, we propose a truly CUDA-Aware MPI Allreduce design that exploits CUDA kernels and pointer caching to perform large reductions efficiently. Our proposed designs offer 5-17X better performance than NCCL2 for small and medium messages, and reduces latency by 29% for large messages. The proposed optimizations help Horovod-MPI to achieve approximately 90% scaling efficiency for ResNet-50 training on 64 GPUs. Further, Horovod-MPI achieves 1.8X and 3.2X higher throughput than the native gRPC method for ResNet-50 and MobileNet, respectively, on the Piz Daint cluster.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to IEEE IPDPS 2019 for peer-revie

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen which infect immunocompromised patients. bacteria produce large types of virulence factors that serves its pathogenicity. The exotoxin A is major toxic extracellular virulent factor produced by P. aeruginosa. To clear the effect of exotoxin A and P. aeruginosa , Bacteria suspension and Exotoxin A extraction were injected intraperitonially in four group of rabbits, the result show there was significant decrease in total leukocyte count in all groups specially after 7 days from injection of Bacteria suspension and Exotoxin A also there is increase in neutrophilia percentage is the same period, the bacteria suspension and toxin A are capable alone or in both to activated phagocytosis, and produce neutralizing antibodies and produce pathological and immunological effect in liver spleen , kidney and lung and this suggest that toxin A and P. aeruginosa bacteria can effect in some immunological and pathological aspect when injected in experimental rabbit

Electric Field Waveforms of Very Close Negative Cloud to Ground Flashes

    Get PDF
Negative cloud-to-ground brings down negative charge from cloud to ground. In this paper, observations of the characteristics of fast and slow electric field within reversal distance (less than 7-8 km from lightning sensor) are reported. A total of four negative cloud to ground lashes detected very close to our measurement site in Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka on 12th November 2019 were selected for analysis. The captured waveforms are compared with the location data provided by Tenaga Nasional Berhad Research (TNBR) for validation purposes. It can be observed that electric field changes of stepped leader and return stroke are always positive whether beyond or within reversal distance. Meanwhile, for cloud activities, the electric field change is always negative within reversal distance
