Ground-based photometry of comets in the spectral interval 3000 to 3500 angstrom

    Get PDF
Abundances and production rates of CN, C3, and C2 for fifteen comets were determined and the variation of these parameters with helicentric distance for two comets were monitored. While these measurements provide much information about the similarities and differences among comets, only a small fraction of the total material in any of the comets observed was sampled

Economic Statistics and U.S. Agricultural Policy

Economic statistics can be used to inform policy as it is being designed, avoid policy design mistakes, or implement government programs once they are established into law. Oftentimes, statistics are used for all three purposes. This paper considers the relationships between statistics and agricultural policy in the case of the United States. We address first the broad historical picture of U.S. official economic statistics concerning agriculture, and then turn to selected examples that relate policies to economic statistics in more detail. The examples show diversity in the interplay between statistics and policy. As policies have become broader in scope, addressing not only farm commodity markets but also differences among farms and a widening set of activities on farms, policymakers have asked for more detailed information about the financial situation of individual farm businesses and households, sources of risk in farm returns, and production practices that affect the environment.Agricultural policy, Data collection and estimation, Economic history of U.S. agriculture, Agricultural and Food Policy, Q18, C8, N52,

Use of Hydration Inhibitors to Improve Bond Durability of Aluminum Adhesive Joints

    Get PDF
An investigation is conducted of the mechanisms by which nitrilotris methylene phosphonic acid (NTMP) and related compounds are adsorbed onto oxidized aluminum surfaces to inhibit hydration and increase the durability of adhesive bonds formed with inhibitor-treated panels. P - O - Al bonds are identified as the basis of adsorption, and it is found that water initially adsorbed onto the etched aluminum surfaces is displaced by the NTMP. The hydration of the NTMP-treated surfaces occurs in three stages, namely the reverisble physisorption of water, the slow dissolution of NTMP followed by rapid hydration of the freshly exposed Al2O3 to AlOOH and further hydration of the surface to Al(OH)3. Five properties of an ideal inhibitor are identified

The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 by (1) Ceres

The 13 November 1984 occultation of BD +08 deg 0471 was discovered during a photographic search carried out with the 0.5 meter Carnegie Double Astrograph at Lick Observatory and the Lowell Observatory PDS microdensitometer. Such a search was stimulated by the curious fact that few favorably located occultations of AGK3 or SAO catalog starts by Ceres will occur during the 1980s. The occultation on 13 November, however, is a particularly good event. The star is 1000 cubic M in V, yielding a predicted drop at occultation of about 10%. Such a drop can be detected by small telescopes equipped with photoelectric photometers, but is too small to be seen visually. The track was predicted to cross the Caribbean, Florida, southern Texas, and Mexico. Based on this prediction, preparations were made to observe the event in Mexico using four portable occultation data systems

The 15 years of comet photometry: A comparative analysis of 80 comets

In 1976, a program of narrowband photometry of comets was initiated that has encompassed well over 400 nights of observations. To date, the program has provided detailed information on 80 comets, 11 of which were observed during multiple apparitions. The filters (initially isolating CN, C2, and continuum and later including C3, OH, and NH) as well as the detectors used for the observations were changed over time, and the parameters adopted in the reduction and modeling of the data have likewise evolved. Accordingly, we have re-reduced the entire database and have derived production rates using current values for scalelengths and fluorescence efficiencies. Having completed this task, the results for different comets can now be meaningfully compared. The general characteristics that are discussed include ranges in composition (molecular production rate ratios) and dustiness (gas production compared with Af(rho)). Additionally an analysis of trends on how the production rates vary with heliocentric distance and on pre- and post-perihelion asymmetries in the production rates of individual comets. Possible taxonomic groupings are also described

Journalism Graduates’ Perceptions and Experiences of Internships and Employment

Graduates who do not have an internship show greater difficulty in obtaining gainful employment compared to those who do have an internship. However, simply believing that internships may translate into employment does not explain how students perceive the role of the internship in obtaining employment in the field. The purpose of the study was to investigate the graduates’ perceptions and experiences of how internships might affect journalism majors’ gaining employment in the field within 6 months of graduation. Kolb’s four stages of experiential learning theory was used as the conceptual framework to investigate how journalism-related major graduates described their journalism internship perceptions and experiences that led to employment in the field. A qualitative phenomenographical research design was used to conduct 10 semistructured, interviews using a video platform with participants who had completed at least one journalism internship and had obtained a job in the field of journalism or a related field within 6 months of graduating. Using inductive coding, themes identified were participants perceived internships strengthened skills development and affective behavior development. Subthemes included the perceived development of (a) technical skills, (b) production skills, and (c) interviewing skills. Study findings were that graduates’ journalism skills were solidified beyond learning they experienced in traditional university classrooms, consequently leading to swift employment in competitive positions in the field of journalism. These findings may inform university stakeholders to optimize the use of student internships thereby advancing graduates to the forefront of the journalism field

Teaching Preservice Teachers in the Time of COVID: What’s Worth Keeping?

As we begin to transition from online instruction to in-person, we (four mathematics teacher educators) reflect on how COVID-19 impacted our instruction and address the question: what will we take back to in-person instruction? This article includes our individual reflections and an analytical synthesis of them. Findings reveal that there were unanticipated ways that human connection and consideration arose from teaching online, much of which we want to maintain in some form when returning to brick and mortar classrooms. We conclude by highlighting the value and importance of reflection for our own well-being
