The study investigated the readiness and attitude of female workers towards retirement. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 400 female workers from ministries, teaching service commission, tertiary institutions as well as private establishments in Rivers State. The “Readiness and Attitude of Female Workers Toward Retirement Questionnaire” (RAFWTRQ) was administered to the respondents to collect relevant data. The t-test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) statistics were used to test three generated null hypotheses. The findings showed that there were no significant differences between and among respondents’ readiness and attitude towards retirement based on religious affiliations, marital status, academic qualification and job type. Significant differences were, however, found among the female workers based on age group. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made. Amongst them are: professional counselors in Nigeria should step up efforts at establishing their own counseling clinics where they would be able to provide assistance to serving workers on readiness for retirement and counselors should effectively utilize their general counseling skills through the different non governmental organizations (NGOs), women organizations and groups in enlightenment campaigns on readiness for retirement. Key words: Readiness, Attitude, Retiremen

Filarial infections were studied in Amassoma community between March 2006 and April 2007. Seven hundred and eighty blood samples were obtained and examined using standard parasitological techniques. Of this number, 227 (25.5%) samples were infected with filarial spp as follows: Mansonella perstans 121 (43.8%), Wuchereria bancrofit 80 (28.8%), Loa loa 75 (27.1%) and Onchoceria volvulus 1 (0.3%). Peak infection (44.3%) occurred in the 30-39 years age bracket. The lowest infection rate was observed in the candidates above 70 years old. Microfilarial density (mfd) was highest in this age bracket. The lowest mfd occurred in 1-9 years old. Infection was higher (38.9%) in the males than in the females (33.9%). Higher infection in the males was attributed to fishing, which was predominantly a male occupation. Three of the five mosquito spp collected from the community hardboured microfilariae: Anopheles gambiae (9.5%), A- funestus (6.6%), Culex quinquefestus (4.1%), Anopheles nili (-%), Aedes aegypti (0%). The presence of the microfilariae confirms that filarial infections in the study area are endemic. Entomological survey was done in the night and insects that were active in day-time were not trapped. @ JASE

Background & objectives: Correct vector identification is an important task in the planning and implementationof malaria vector control programmes. This study was designed to provide baseline information on the speciescomposition and distribution of members of the Anopheles gambiae complex in three eco-vegetational zones inBayelsa state, Nigeria. Methods: Adult mosquitoes were collected by pyrethrum spray catch (PSC) in randomly selected houses duringSeptember 2009–August 2010. Anopheles mosquitoes were identified using standard morphological keys.Mosquitoes identified as An. gambiae s.l. were used for species specific PCR-assays.Results: Out of 203 Anopheles gambiae s.l. successfully amplified, 180 (88.7%) were Anopheles gambiae s.s.,14 (6.9%) were An. melas and 9 (4.4%) were An. arabiensis. The variation in the sibling species composition ofAn. gambiae s.l. was not significant (p >0.05). Anopheles gambiae s.s. was predominant in all the collectionswith three sibling species occurring in all the eco-vegetational zones.Interpretation & conclusion: The observation of An. melas in the fresh water swamp forest of Yenagoa is ofimportance in malaria epidemiology. These findings are of importance in the planning and implementation ofmalaria vector control strategy in the three eco-vegetational zones of Bayelsa state

Estimation of time delays from unresolved photometry

Long-time monitoring of gravitational lens systems is often done using telescopes and recording equipment with a modest resolution. Still, it would be interesting to get as much information as possible from the measured lightcurves. From high resolution images we know that the recorded quasar images are often blends and that the corresponding time series are not pure shifted replicas of the source variability. In this paper we will develop an algorithm to unscramble this kind of blended data. The proposed method is based on a simple idea. We use one of the photometric curves, which is supposedly a simple shifted replica of the source curve, to build different artificial combined curves. Then we compare these artificial curves with the blended curves. Proper solutions for a full set of time delays are then obtained by varying free input parameters and estimating statistical distances between the artificial and blended curves. We performed a check of feasibility and applicability of the new algorithm. For numerically generated data sets the time delay systems were recovered for a wide range of setups. Application of the new algorithm to the classical double quasar QSO 0957+561 A,B lightcurves shows a clear splitting of one of the images. This is an unexpected result and extremely interesting, especially in the context of the recent controversy about the exact time delay value for the system. The proposed method allows to analyse properly the data from low resolution observations which have long time coverages. There is a number of gravitational lens monitoring programmes, which can make use of the new algorithm

Mismatched decoding: Error exponents, second-order rates and saddlepoint approximations

This paper considers the problem of channel coding with a given (possibly suboptimal) maximum-metric decoding rule. A cost-constrained random-coding ensemble with multiple auxiliary costs is introduced, and is shown to achieve error exponents and second-order coding rates matching those of constant-composition random coding, while being directly applicable to channels with infinite or continuous alphabets. The number of auxiliary costs required to match the error exponents and second-order rates of constant-composition coding is studied, and is shown to be at most two. For independent identically distributed random coding, asymptotic estimates of two well-known non-asymptotic bounds are given using saddlepoint approximations. Each expression is shown to characterize the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding random-coding bound at both fixed and varying rates, thus unifying the regimes characterized by error exponents, second-order rates, and moderate deviations. For fixed rates, novel exact asymptotics expressions are obtained to within a multiplicative 1+o(1) term. Using numerical examples, it is shown that the saddlepoint approximations are highly accurate even at short block lengths. This work was supported in part by the European Research Council under Grant 259663, in part by the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme under Grant 303633, and in part by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under Grants RYC-2011-08150 and TEC2012-38800-C03-03
