    Palaeontological framework from Pirabas Formation (North Brazil) used as potential model for equatorial carbonate platform

    The Pirabas Formation (early to middle Miocene) from the equatorial margin of North Brazil is characterized by a shallow-marine carbonate platform with high fossil diversity and abundant micro- and macrofossil remains. The Pirabas Formation represents a unique carbonate system along the Atlantic margin of South America that developed before the onset of the Amazon delta. We studied the palaeontology and lithofacies of outcrops of the uppermost Pirabas Formation and found that was deposited in a coastal marine environment with marginal lagoons under the influence of a tidal regime and tropical storms. The remains of calcareous algae, molluscs, crustaceans, echinoiderms, bryozoans, solitary corals, fish and marine mammals, together with foraminifera, ostracods and other marine microfossils, shaped a biogenic framework, that together with the post-depositional processes of dissolution of skeletal grains, is responsible for the mean packstone-floatstone porosity of 14.9%. The palaeontological framework and the petrophysical characterization of the carbonate rocks from the uppermost Pirabas Formation outcrop represent a baseline to interpret the entire Pirabas Formation in the subsurface stratigraphic sections (cores) of this important Neogene unit. Considering that carbonate rocks account for ~50% of oil and gas reservoirs around the world, this research provides a model for Neogene tropical carbonate deposits useful for carbonate petroliferous reservoirs in the Brazilian equatorial basins.publishe

    Carbon and oxygen isotope geochemistry of Ediacaran outer platform carbonates, Paraguay Belt, central Brazil

    After the late Cryogenian glaciation the central region of Brazil was the site of extensive deposition of platformal carbonates of the Araras Group. This group includes a basal cap carbonate sequence succeeded by transgressive, deep platform deposits of bituminous lime mudstone and shale. Facies and stratigraphic data combined with carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses of the most complete section of the transgressive deposits, exposed in the Guia syncline, were used to evaluate the depositional paleoenvironment and to test the correlation of these deposits along the belt and with other units worldwide. The studied succession consists of 150 m thick tabular beds of black to grey lime mudstone and shale with predominantly negative delta13C PDB values around -2.5 to -1‰ . The delta13C PDB profile of Guia syncline shows a clear correlation with the upper portion of Guia Formation in the Cáceres region, about 200 km to the southwest. The delta13C PDB profile of the Araras Group is comparable with delta13C PDB profiles of Ediacaran units of the southern Paraguay Belt, western Canada, and the Congo and Kalahari cratons. Moreover, facies distribution, stratigraphy and the carbon isotopic profile of the Araras Group match the middle Tsumeb Subgroup in Namibia, which reinforces the Ediacaran age assigned to the Araras Group

    Environmental changes in the western Amazônia: morphological framework, geochemistry, palynology and radiocarbon dating data

    The sediments from the Coari lake, a “terra firme” lake sculpted into Plio-Pleistocene deposits, and the Acará lake, a flooding-type lake developed on Quaternary sediments in the floodplain of the mid-Solimões river, in the western Amazônia, Brazil, were studied to investigate the environmental condition of their developing. This study includes mineral composition, geochemistry, Pb isotope, palinology, radiocarbon-age and morphological framework of the lakes obtained from SRTM satellite images. The geological and the environmental conditions in the two lakes are highly variable and suggest that their evolution reflect autogenic processes under humid rainforest condition. Although kaolinite, quartz, muscovite, illite, and smectite are the main minerals in both lakes, the geochemistry indicates distinct source, the Acará lake sediments have higher concentrations of Al2O3, Fe2O3, FeO, CaO, K2O, MgO, Na2O, P2O5, Ba, V, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Sr, Li, Y and La and have more radiogenic Pb than the Coari lake sediments. The radiocarbon ages suggest that at 10160 yr BP the Coari lake started to be developed due to avulsion of the Solimões river, and the Acará lake was formed by the meander abandonment of Solimões river retaining its grass dominated shore at ca. 3710 yr BP.<br>Os sedimentos do lago Coari, de ambiente de terra firme eesculpido nos depósitos do Plio-Pleistocenos, e o Acará, típico lago de várzea e ambos formados nos sedimentos quaternários da planície de inundação do médio Solimões, no oeste da Amazônia, Brasil, foram estudados para investigar as condições ambientais durante sua formação. Este estudo inclui dados da composição mineralógica, química, isótopos de Pb, palinologia, datações de radiocarbono e a configuração morfológica dos lagos obtida por imagens SRTM. As condições geológica e ambiental dos lagos variam e sugerem que suas evoluções refletem processos autogenéticos em condições de floresta úmida e chuvosa. Embora caulinita, quartz, muscovita, illita e esmectita sejam os principais minerais em ambos os lagos, a geoquímica indica fonte distinta, os sedimentos do lago Acará têm maior concentração de Al2O3, Fe2O3, FeO, CaO, K2O, MgO, Na2O, P2O5, Ba, V, Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Sr, Li, Y e La e têm mais Pb radiogênico que os sedimentos do lago Coari. As idades de radiocarbono sugerem que há aproximadamente 10160 anos AP o lago Coari iniciou o desenvolvimento devido a avulsão do rio Solimões, enquanto o lago Acará foi formado devido ao abandono de meandro do rio Solimões e retendo o domínio das gramíneas nas suas praias há aproximadamente 3710 anos AP

    International audienceA sedimentological and C–O isotopic study has been carried out in nine sections of the Sete Lagoas Formation at its classical outcropping area, in the southern tip of the São Francisco craton (central Brazil), with the objective of refining its stratigraphic position within the Neoproterozoic. At the study area, the Neoproterozoic Sete Lagoas Formation comprises two shallowing-upward megacycles, corresponding to more than 200 m in thickness. Each cycle is limited by a flooding surface amalgamated with a third-order sequence boundary. The first megacycle presents deep-platform deposits with abundance of crystal fans (aragonite pseudomorphs). These deposits are characterized by negative C-isotope values (–4.5‰). They grade upward to storm-wave and tide-influenced layers with δ13C values around 0‰. In the second megacycle, a new transgression drowned the platform, depositing a thick, mixed sub-storm wave-base succession. This megacycle comprises deposits of lime mudstone-pelite rhythmite, which grade to crystalline limestone rich in organic matter, both with unusually positive δ13C values (up to + 14‰). Regional correlation of Sete Lagoas deposits indicate that they rest atop glaciomarine rocks of the Macaúbas Group and basal strata show seafloor precipitates with negative δ13C values. Therefore, it is possible to characterize the Sete Lagoas carbonate as a cap carbonate sequence. The very high δ13C in the second megacycle together with geochronologic data suggest that this unit correlates better with post-Sturtian sequences. Some differences in the depositional record are observed between Sete Lagoas and the other post-Sturtian units previously described in North America, Australia, and Namibia. Those differences may in part be due to deposition in shallower settings of the Sete Lagoas carbonates, thus preserving a thick record of storm- and wave-influenced sedimentation not found elsewhere. Alternatively, they may also be attributed to diachronic deposition of the so-called post-Sturtian cap carbonate sequences.Afin de préciser la position stratigraphique de la formation de Sete Lagoas dans le Néoprotérozoïque, nous avons mené une étude sédimentologique et isotopique (carbone et oxygène) de neuf sections, dans le secteur d'affleurement classique, à l'extrémité méridionale du craton de São Francisco (Brésil central). Dans ce secteur, la formation de Sete Lagoas comporte deux mégacycles régressifs, correspondant à plus de 200 m d'épaisseur. Chaque cycle est limité par une surface d'inondation confondue avec une limite de séquence de troisième ordre. Le premier mégacycle commence par des dépôts de plate-forme profonde, caractérisés par des valeurs de δ13C négatives (–4,5 ‰), qui contiennent de nombreux éventails de cristaux (pseudomorphes d'aragonite). Leur succèdent des niveaux moins profonds, influencés par les marées et tempêtes, caractérisés par des valeurs de δ13C voisines de 0 ‰. Au cours du second mégacycle, une nouvelle transgression ennoie la plate-forme, et une épaisse succession se dépose à la limite d'action des vagues de tempêtes. Ce mégacycle contient des rythmites de carbonates micritiques et de pélites, qui évoluent vers des carbonates cristallins riches en matière organique, et présentent des valeurs de δ13C exceptionnellement positives (jusqu'à +14 ‰). Sur la base de corrélations stratigraphiques régionales, qui suggèrent que la formation de Sete Lagoas succède aux roches glaciomarines du groupe Macaúbas, ainsi que sur la base des valeurs négatives de δ13C dans ses niveaux de base contenant les précipités sur le plancher sous-marin, on peut assimiler les carbonates de la formation de Sete Lagoas à une séquence de cap carbonate. Les valeurs de δ13C, très positives, du deuxième mégacycle, ainsi que les données géochronologiques suggèrent que la formation de Sete Lagoas est post-sturtienne plutôt que post-marinoenne. Les conditions de dépôt présentent des différences notables avec celles des unités post-sturtiennes décrites en Amérique du Nord, en Australie et en Namibie. Cela peut s'interpréter, soit par un diachronisme des cap carbonates post-sturtiens, soit par une sédimentation dans un contexte moins profond, ayant permis ici l'accumulation d'une épaisse série dans la zone d'action des vagues de tempête

    O presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar comparativamente as alterações clínicas e hematológicas desencadeadas por isolados de Babesia bigemina das regiões Sudeste, Nordeste e Norte do Brasil em bezerros Nelore infectados experimentalmente. Foram utilizados 18 bezerros com idade entre sete e nove meses, isentos de anticorpos contra Babesia sp. e criados livres de carrapatos. Três animais foram previamente inoculados com 2,0x10(9) eritrócitos parasitados (EP) para cada isolado. Os outros 15 bezerros foram subdivididos em três grupos de cinco animais, que foram subinoculados com 1,0x10(10) EP dos respectivos isolados. Foram avaliadas as alterações clínicas e hematológicas por meio da determinação da parasitemia, do hemograma, do fibrinogênio plasmático, da contagem de reticulócitos, da análise descritiva da medula óssea e da fragilidade osmótica eritrocitária, no decorrer de 30 dias, perfazendo um total de sete momentos de observação. O acompanhamento da resposta imunológica pelo teste de imunofluorescência indireta foi realizado diariamente até o 10&ordm; dia pós-inoculação (DPI) e posteriormente no 15&ordm;, 20&ordm;, 25&ordm; e 30&ordm; DPI. Clinicamente, observou-se uma manifestação muito branda da doença. Os achados laboratoriais revelaram baixos níveis de parasitemia; decréscimo nos valores do eritrograma; ausência de reticulócitos; diminuição inicial na contagem total dos leucócitos, neutrófilos e linfócitos com posterior elevação do número destas células; hipercelularidade da série eritrocítica e decréscimo da relação mielóide:eritróide mais acentuada entre o 8&ordm; e 12&ordm; DPI e um aumento da fragilidade osmótica eritrocitária nos grupos inoculados com os isolados sudeste e nordeste. Nenhum dos três isolados de B. bigemina desencadeou a forma clínica característica da enfermidade, apesar de induzirem uma resposta imune humoral.<br>A comparative study was made regarding the clinical and hematological alterations caused by isolates of Babesia bigemina from southeastern, northeastern and northern Brazil in experimentally infected Nelore calves. Eighteen calves between 7 and 9 months of age, without antibodies against Babesia sp and raised free from ticks, were used. Three animals were previously inoculated with 2.0x10(9) parasitic erythrocytes (PE) for each stabilate. The other 15 calves were subdivided into three groups, with five animals each, that were subinoculated with 1.0x10(10) PE of the respective isolates. The clinical and hematological alterations were evaluated by the determination of parasitaemia, haemogram, plasmatic fibrinogen, reticulocyte count, descriptive analysis of the bone marrow and erythrocytic osmotic fragility, for 30 days, totalizing seven moments of observation. The follow-up of the immunological response by the indirect fluorescent antibody test was carried out daily until the 10th day after inoculation (DAI) and after that, on the 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th DAI. A mild clinical manifestation of the disease was observed. The laboratory findings revealed low levels of parasitaemia; decrease of the erythrogram values; absence of reticulocytes, initial decrease in the total count of leukocytes, neutrophils and lymphocytes with a posterior elevation of the number of these cells; hypercellularity of the erythrocytic series and decrease of the myeloid: erythroid relation which was more accentuated between the 8th and 12th DAI, and an increase of the erythrocytic osmotic fragility in the groups inoculated with the Southeast and Northeast isolates. None of the three isolates of B. bigemina gave rise to the clinical characteristic form of the disease, although they induced an humoral immune response
