    Expanding Engineering and Technology Opportunities to Students in the Border Region through International Collaboration For some years now, our Department of Engineering Technology of the XXXX, has collaborated with Universities across the southern border to carry out different activities such as undergraduate research, collaborative course-based projects, and senior design projects. We have observed how students benefit from being exposed to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams. We now expand this form of work to a higher-level research collaboration where students and faculty from four different institutions participate. Two institutions of higher education in Mexico and a University and a Community College in the United States. The collaboration carries out an innovative project that requires the integration of different specialties. The project consists of an intelligent clothing storage and retrieval system that involves artificial intelligence, and design of a sophisticated electromechanical system that optimizes storage and retrieval and adapts to the needs of people with visual disabilities. The collaborative effort includes the active participation of the faculty, supported by a team of undergraduate students. An important part of the project includes a master\u27s student from Mexico visiting the XXXX for three months to collaborate in the project. Fortunately, The University of XXX System and CONACYT, Mexico’s entity in charge of promoting scientific and technological development, have established an initiative to support bi-national academic research and collaboration through the ConTex program. This is an opportunity to apply for the funding needed to take the project to successful completion. This type of work represents a challenge in international collaboration and the text discusses not only the benefits but also the way to face these challenges. The pedagogical issues in managing this type of multidisciplinary and multicultural research-oriented technological project are presented in the paper. A thorough literature survey on international collaborative projects of a similar nature will be included in the paper

    Increased IgE serum levels are unrelated to allergic and parasitic diseases in patients with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the IgE serum levels in juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus patients and to evaluate possible associations with clinical and laboratory features, disease activity and tissue damage. METHODS: The IgE serum concentrations in 69 consecutive juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus patients were determined by nephelometry. IgG, IgM and IgA concentrations were measured by immunoturbidimetry. All patients were negative for intestinal parasites. Statistical analysis methods included the Mann-Whitney, chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, as well as the Spearman rank correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Increased IgE concentrations above 100 IU/mL were observed in 31/69 (45%) juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus patients. The mean IgE concentration was 442.0 ± 163.4 IU/ml (range 3.5-9936.0 IU/ml). Fifteen of the 69 patients had atopic disease, nine patients had severe sepsis and 56 patients presented with nephritis. The mean IgE level in 54 juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus patients without atopic manifestations was 271.6 ± 699.5 IU/ml, and only nine of the 31 (29%) patients with high IgE levels had atopic disease. The IgE levels did not statistically differ with respect to the presence of atopic disease, severe sepsis, nephritis, disease activity, or tissue damage. Interestingly, IgE concentrations were inversely correlated with C4 levels (r = -0.25, p = 0.03) and with the SLICC/ACR-DI score (r = -0.34, p = 0.005). The IgE concentration was also found to be directly correlated with IgA levels (r = 0.52, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated for the first time that juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus patients have increased IgE serum levels. This increase in IgE levels was not related to allergic or parasitic diseases. Our results are in line with the hypothesis that high IgE levels can be considered a marker of immune dysregulation

    Smart Environments for Assisted Living: A Multidisciplinary Collaboration in Engineering and Architecture Education

    This paper presents a description of a collaborative project based on the integration of technology development in the built environment for assisted living. The multidisciplinary collaboration is developed as a cooperative commitment to provide support for cross-border, collective projects. It was initiated as a project-based learning setting between undergraduate engineering students, and four years later the program shifted to include undergraduate architecture students and engineering master’s students. The learning experience opens the gate to a completely new collaborative setting, yet to be established, independent from its predecessor setting of project-based learning, focusing now towards an interdisciplinarity setting in cross-border collaboration. The new collaborative projects focus on smart environments for assisted living, with an emphasis on technology development and retrofitting of the built environment. The four participating programs are from three different leaders higher education institutions, from both sides of the US and Mexico border. Smart Environments (SmE), design, and technology applications are relevant topics across multiple and diverse disciplines and areas of contemporary life. Different kinds of SmE in the domain of smart homes have been developed in academia and industry. For healthcare and assisted living development highlights include monitoring the behavior, emergency detection, cognitive and physical information, emotional information, etc., to offer a variety of useful services, solutions or benefits to patients, disabled and the elderly. This is relevant because it has been suggested as a viable solution to maintain independence, functionality, well-being and higher quality of life of elders who will increase in number worldwide by approximately 20% by 2050. However, incorporating physical and digital technologies (technologies 4.0) into building retrofitting is a feature of scalability and configurability for a future generation of smart applications. This paper summarizes the current applications of multidisciplinary collaboration in the Computer Systems Engineering, Architectural, and Engineering Technology fields. It describes a work in progress as a key element in international, multidisciplinary research in undergraduate education, with the aim of sharing challenges, lessons learned, and future work

    Assessment of regional pulmonary blood flow using Ga-68-DOTA PET

    Background: In vivo determination of regional pulmonary blood flow (PBF) is a valuable tool for the evaluation of many lung diseases. In this study, the use of Ga-68-DOTA PET for the in vivo quantitative determination of regional PBF is proposed. This methodology was implemented and tested in healthy pigs and validated using fluorescent microspheres. The study was performed on young large white pigs (n = 4). To assess the reproducibility and consistency of the method, three PET scans were obtained for each animal. Each radiotracer injection was performed simultaneously to the injection of fluorescent microspheres. PBF images were generated applying a two-compartment exchange model over the dynamic PET images. PET and microspheres values were compared by regression analysis and Bland-Altman plot. Results: The capability of the proposed technique to produce 3D regional PBF images was demonstrated. The correlation evaluation between Ga-68-DOTA PET and microspheres showed a good and significant correlation (r = 0.74, P < 0.001). Conclusions: Assessment of PBF with the proposed technique allows combining the high quantitative accuracy of PET imaging with the use of Ga-68/Ge-68 generators.     Molecular characterization of the complement C1q, C2 and C4 genes in Brazilian patients with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus

    OBJECTIVE: To perform a molecular characterization of the C1q, C2 and C4 genes in patients with juvenile systemic lupus erythematosus. METHODS: Patient 1 (P1) had undetectable C1q, patient 2 (P2) and patient 3 (P3) had decreased C2 and patient 4 (P4) had decreased C4 levels. All exons and non-coding regions of the C1q and C2 genes were sequenced. Mononuclear cells were cultured and stimulated with interferon gamma to evaluate C1q, C2 and C4 mRNA expression by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: C1q sequencing revealed heterozygous silent mutations in the A (c.276 A>;G Gly) and C (c.126 C>;T Pro) chains, as well as a homozygous single-base change in the 3′ non-coding region of the B chain (c*78 A>;G).     Rasgo Drepanocítico, Manifestaciones Clínicas y Resultados: Un Estudio Transversal en Colombia: Tasa creciente de sujetos sintomáticos que viven a gran altitud

    Resumen.Antecedentes:El rasgo drepanocítico (TCE) es un trastorno sanguíneo autosómico recesivo en el que los pacientes son portadores heterocigotos de hemoglobina S (HbAS) y suelen ser asintomáticos. Realizamos un análisis descriptivo de las manifestaciones clínicas y los resultados asociados al TCS. Métodos: Este fue un estudio descriptivo, transversal que incluyó pacientes con SCT desde 2014 hasta 2020 en el Hospital Militar Central, el centro de referencia de las Fuerzas Militares en Bogotá, Colombia. Resultados: De 647 electroforesis de hemoglobina analizadas, se identificaron 51 pacientes con SCT, incluyendo 43 hombres (84,3%) y ocho mujeres (15,7%), con una mediana de edad de 22 años (IQR 15-36 años). De ellos, 28 (54,8%) eran afrocolombianos, 23 (45,1%) mestizos colombianos y 31/51 (60,8%) de los pacientes eran militares activos. Veinticuatro pacientes (47,1%) fueron asintomáticos, y Veintisiete pacientes (52,9%) fueron sintomáticos (complicaciones sistémicas); La mayoría de los pacientes que presentaron síntomas eran militares activos de las fuerzas militares colombianas. Las complicaciones esplénicas fueron las más importantes (85,2%), p=0,0005, y hubo un amplio espectro de complicaciones esplénicas. Además, se encontraron elevaciones significativas de leucocitos, bilirrubina, LDH y PCR. Dieciocho pacientes (66,7%) recibieron tratamiento médico, cinco (18,5%) requirieron esplenectomía y sólo el 5,9% de los pacientes fueron enviados a consejo genético.Conclusiones: El personal militar es una población con alto riesgo de desarrollar síntomas, y las complicaciones esplénicas fueron las más relevantes en los pacientes sintomáticos. La mayoría de los pacientes recibieron tratamiento médico, y el 18,5% de los pacientes requirieron esplenectomía. Nuestros resultados reflejan la ausencia de redirección de estos pacientes a consejo genéticoAbstract.Background:Sickle cell trait (SCT) is an autosomal recessive blood disorder in which patients are heterozygous carriers for hemoglobin S (HbAS) and are usually asymptomatic. We performed a descriptive analysis of clinical manifestations and outcomes associated with SCT. Methods: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study that included patients with SCT from 2014 to 2020 at Hospital Militar Central, the reference center of the Military forces in Bogota, Colombia. Results: Of 647 hemoglobin electrophoresis analyzed, we identified 51 patients with SCT, including 43 males (84.3%) and eight females (15.7%), with a median age of 22 years (IQR 15–36 years). Of these, 28 (54.8%) were Afro-Colombian, 23 (45.1%) were Colombian mestizos, and 31/51 (60.8%) of patients were active military members. Twenty-four patients (47.1%) were asymptomatic, and Twenty-seven patients (52.9%) were symptomatic (systemic complications); Most of the patients who presented symptoms were active military members of the Colombian military forces. Splenic complications were the most important (85.2%), p=0.0005, and there was a wide spectrum of splenic complications. In addition, we found significant elevations in leukocytes, bilirubin, LDH, and CRP. Eighteen patients (66.7%) received medical management, five (18.5%) required splenectomy, and only 5.9% of patients were sent for genetic counseling.Conclusions: Military Personnel isa population with a high risk of developing symptoms, and splenic complications were the most relevant in symptomatic patients. Most patients received medical treatment, and 18.5% of patients required splenectomy. Our results reflect the absence of redirection of these patients to genetic counseling

    Mexican American Adolescents’ Gender Role Attitude Development: The Role of Adolescents’ Gender and Nativity and Parents’ Gender Role Attitudes

    Gender development has long term implications for education and career endeavors and family formation behaviors, but we know very little about the role of sociocultural factors in developmental and individual differences. In this study, we investigated one domain of gender development, gender role attitudes, in Mexican American adolescents (N = 246; 51% female), using four phases of longitudinal data across eight years. Data were collected when adolescents averaged 12.51 years (SD = 0.58), 14.64 years (SD = 0.59), 17.72 years (SD = 0.57), and 19.60 years of age (SD = 0.66). Mothers’ and fathers’ gender role attitudes also were assessed in Phases 1, 3, and 4. Findings revealed that gender attitude development varied as a function of the interaction between adolescents’ nativity and gender. Among Mexico-born adolescents, females exhibited significant declines in traditional attitudes from early to late adolescence, but males’ attitudes were stable over time. U.S.-born females and males, in contrast, did not differ in their gender attitude trajectories. Examining the links between mothers’, fathers’, and adolescents’ gender role attitudes revealed within-person associations between mothers’ and adolescents’ gender role attitudes: on occasions when mothers reported more traditional attitudes relative to their own cross-time average, adolescents also reported more traditional attitudes than usual. In addition, fathers’ more traditional gender role attitudes were associated with daughters’, but not sons’, more traditional gender role attitudes at the between-person level.
