    A Template for Success: Celebrating the Work of Judith Grabiner

    Judith Grabiner is a mathematician who specializes in the history of mathematics. She is currently the Flora Sanborn Pitzer Professor Emerita of Mathematics at Pitzer College, one of the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. She has authored more than forty articles, as well as three books: The Origins of Cauchy’s Rigorous Calculus (1981), The Calculus as Algebra: J.-L. Lagrange, 1736–1813 (1990), and A Historian Looks Back: The Calculus as Algebra and Selected Writings (2010), which won the Beckenbach Prize from the Mathematical Association of America in 2014. She deliv- ered an invited address titled “The Centrality of Mathemat- ics in the History of Western Thought” at the International Congress of Mathematicians (Berkeley) in 1986. She is the only four-time winner—in 1984, 1998, 2005, and 2010— of the Paul R. Halmos–Lester R. Ford Award for articles of expository excellence published in the American Mathemat- ical Monthly.1 She has also received the Carl B. Allendoerfer Award for expository excellence in Mathematics Magazine on three occasions: in 1984, 1988, and 1996. In 2003 she was given the Mathematical Association of America’s Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching, and in 2013 she became an inaugural Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.     Partnership and Partition: A Case Study of Mathematical Exchange

    It is now just over one hundred years since the beginning of the mathematical partnership between the Cambridge analyst G. H. Hardy and the Indian mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the most celebrated collaborations in the history of mathematics. Indeed, the story of how Ramanujan was brought from India to Cambridge and feted by the British mathematical establishment now borders on legendary. But, in the context of this collection of articles, it provides an interesting case study of mathematical exchange. This paper considers one particular product of the Hardy-Ramanujan creative partnership: their 1918 paper on partitions, and argues that the exchange of ideas prompted by their work on this paper was facilitated in part by their membership of the premier learned body in Britain for the advancement of mathematical research: the London Mathematical Society.Cela fait maintenant un peu plus de cent ans qu’a débuté le partenariat entre l’analyste de Cambridge G. H. Hardy et le génie indien des mathématiques Srinivasa Ramanujan, partenariat qui constitue l’une des plus célèbres collaborations de l’histoire des mathématiques. La manière dont Ramanujan est arrivé à Cambridge et l’accueil enthousiaste qu’il a reçu de la part de la communauté mathématique britannique sont aujourd’hui presque légendaires.     On-Line Distributed Traffic Grooming

    This paper addresses the problem of on-line traffic grooming in WDM paths. Each request consists of a source node, a destination node, and the desired bandwidth for the connection. Connections may be multi-hop, permitting the use of multiple lightpaths. We describe a new distributed on-line algorithm for this problem that is provably wide-sense non-blocking under cer- tain assumptions. Moreover, we use simulations to demonstrate that the algorithm is extremely effective even when some of these assumptions are relaxed

    Inclined Surface Locomotion Strategies for Spherical Tensegrity Robots

    This paper presents a new teleoperated spherical tensegrity robot capable of performing locomotion on steep inclined surfaces. With a novel control scheme centered around the simultaneous actuation of multiple cables, the robot demonstrates robust climbing on inclined surfaces in hardware experiments and speeds significantly faster than previous spherical tensegrity models. This robot is an improvement over other iterations in the TT-series and the first tensegrity to achieve reliable locomotion on inclined surfaces of up to 24\degree. We analyze locomotion in simulation and hardware under single and multi-cable actuation, and introduce two novel multi-cable actuation policies, suited for steep incline climbing and speed, respectively. We propose compelling justifications for the increased dynamic ability of the robot and motivate development of optimization algorithms able to take advantage of the robot's increased control authority.Comment: 6 pages, 11 figures, IROS 201

    How the Neoproterozoic S-isotope record illuminates the genesis of vein gold systems: an example from the Dalradian Supergroup in Scotland

    The genesis of quartz vein-hosted gold mineralization in the Neoproterozoic–early Palaeozoic Dalradian Supergroup of Scotland remains controversial. An extensive new dataset of S-isotope analyses from the Tyndrum area, together with correlation of the global Neoproterozoic sedimentary S-isotope dataset to the Dalradian stratigraphy, demonstrates a mixed sedimentary and magmatic sulphur source for the mineralization. d34S values for early molybdenite- and later gold-bearing mineralization range from 22 to +12‰, but show distinct populations related to mineralization type. Modelling of the relative input of magmatic and sedimentary sulphur into gold-bearing quartz veins with d34S values of +12‰ indicates a maximum of 68% magmatic sulphur, and that S-rich, SEDEX-bearing, Easdale Subgroup metasedimentary rocks lying stratigraphically above the host rocks represent the only viable source of sedimentary sulphur in the Dalradian Supergroup. Consequently, the immediate host rocks were not a major source of sulphur to the mineralization, consistent with their low bulk sulphur and lack of metal enrichment. Recent structural models of the Tyndrum area suggest that Easdale Subgroup metasedimentary rocks, enriched in 34S, sulphur and metals, are repeated at depth owing to folding, and it is suggested that these are the most likely source of sedimentary sulphur, and possibly metals, for the ore fluids

    Evaluation of a male-specific psychotherapeutic program for major depressive disorder compared to cognitive behavioral therapy and waitlist: study protocol for a six-arm randomized clinical superiority trial examining depressed eugonadal and hypogonadal men receiving testosterone

    BACKGROUND: Treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in men is complicated by the endorsement of traditional masculinity ideologies (TMI) often leading to reluctance toward psychotherapy, therapy interfering processes, or premature termination. In addition, it has been shown that men with MDD have a significantly increased risk of being hypogonadal (e.g., total testosterone levels <12.1 nmoL/L). Therefore, it is recommended to examine depressed men with regard to their testosterone status and if hypogonadism is present to combine psychotherapy with testosterone treatment (TT). AIM: This project aims to evaluate a male-specific psychotherapeutic program (MSPP) for MDD in depressed eugonadal and hypogonadal men receiving testosterone in comparison to a standard cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for MDD and a Waitlist. METHODS: The study presents a 2×3 factorial study design. In total, 144 men aged between 25 and 50 will be stratified by testosterone status (eugonadal/hypogonadal) and then randomized into one of the three conditions (MSPP, CBT, or Waitlist). Additionally, a healthy control group of 100 men will be recruited, which will undergo only baseline assessments. Both standardized psychotherapy programs will encompass 18 sessions delivered in a weekly manner. Aligned with the TT-related medical visits of the 72 hypogonadal men, all participants will be followed up with clinical assessments and bio sampling at weeks 0, 6, 15, 24, and 36. EXPECTED RESULTS: Compared to Waitlist control groups, treatment groups are expected to be more effective and efficacious (depression score reduction of ≥50%) at week 24 and at the follow-up at week 36. The MSPP is expected to show higher effectiveness and efficacy for depressive symptoms and higher acceptability (lower dropout rate) as compared to CBT. DISCUSSION: This study represents the first attempt to test a male-specific psychotherapy for MDD in a single-setting compared to standard CBT and a Waitlist control condition using randomized clinical trial methodology. In addition, the potential positive adjunct effect of psychotherapy to TT in reducing depressive burden and improving quality of life in hypogonadal depressed men represents a neglected research area and might introduce new hypogonadism screening procedures in depressed men and combined treatment approaches for depressed men suffering from hypogonadism. Limitations are the rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria, which limit the generalizability of the study results to first episode treatment naïve depressed men.     Status loss due to COVID-19, traditional masculinity, and their association with recent suicide attempts and suicidal ideation

    The COVID-19 pandemic is causing extensive job loss leading to a loss of social status in many men. Endorsement of traditional masculinity ideology may render some men particularly sensitive to status loss and thereby to an increased risk for suicidality. In this anonymous online survey conducted in German-speaking European countries, 490 men completed questionnaires regarding loss of social status due to the COVID-19 pandemic, past-month and lifetime suicide attempt and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, endorsement of traditional masculinity ideology and prototypical and male-typical externalizing depression symptoms were measured. Out of a total of 490 men, 14.7% of men reported experiencing status loss due to the pandemic. These men were more than four times as likely to have attempted suicide in the past month (OR = 4.48, 95% CI [1.72, 11.67]) and more than twice as likely to report suicidal ideation during the past 2 weeks (OR = 2.47, 95% CI [1.42, 4.28]), than men not reporting status loss. Status loss, but not endorsement of traditional masculinity ideology, was associated with suicide outcomes. However, when male-typical externalizing depression symptoms and prototypical depression symptoms were included in the models, they exhibited the only direct associations with suicide outcomes (e.g., for past-month suicide attempt: male-typical externalizing depression symptoms OR = 2.18, 95% CI [1.31, 3.62], prototypical depression symptoms OR = 2.41, 95% CI [1.13, 5.12]). A significant interaction between status loss and endorsement of traditional masculinity ideology further suggests an enhancing moderating effect of traditional masculinity on the relationship between status loss and past-month suicide attempts (OR = 3.27, 95% CI [1.16, 9.27]). Status loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic emerges as risk factor for suicide in men. Men who experience status loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic while concomitantly exhibiting strong endorsement of traditional masculinity ideology have an additional increased risk of suicide
