    Revealing the Gothic Narrative Tradition in Eudora Welty\u27s Delta Wedding and Jane Austen\u27s Northanger Abbey: A Study of the Transatlantic Novel

    The aesthetic principles of the Gothic lexicon were first legitimized by popular eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novels such as The Monk and The Castle of Otranto. The male authors of these novels promote a fascination with the supernatural. As scholars studied this period in the history of the novel, two subgenres of the Gothic emerged: the masculine and feminine. This feminine subgenre includes Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey and Eudora Welty’s Delta Wedding. Jane Austen, and later Eudora Welty, remediate the Gothic narrative tradition of eighteenth-century novelists. The goal of this new feminine subgenre is to satirize the masculine subgenre’s phantasmagoric means of presentation. Furthermore, the fundamental aesthetics of the Gothic were taken up by Jane Austen during first-wave feminism and Eudora Welty just before second-wave feminism. Each used the novel’s aesthetic relationship with the Gothic as a medium for expressing inherently feminist perspectives

    The disintegration of a liquid jet emerging from a nozzle by a high speed gas stream has been under investigation of several decades. A result of the liquid jet disintegration is droplet formation. This process is referred to as atomization. Industrial applications use atomization as a method for applying coatings to substrates. It has been reported that the use of other atomizing gases instead of compressed plant air will positively affect paint droplet size distributions, spray patterns and finish qualities; furthermore, the ionization and heating of the atomizing gas was reported to positively affect finish qualities. Although ionization techniques have been studied in the past, a lack of specific information remains about how ionization actually affects droplet formation and size, and finish quality. To determine the effect of the different atomizing gases, heating, and ionization several methods were used. The droplet size distribution of the spray was captured with the use of laser diffraction, while the large-scale characteristics of the flow were recorded with Infrared thermography.     Cambodia at a Crossroads: How Repealing UNTAC Article 63, Cambodia\u27s Current Defamation Law, Will Lead to a More Vigorous Democracy

    Cambodia’s current criminal defamation law is an impermissible intrusion of Cambodians’ constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of expression. The law itself is a remnant of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia. Moreover it is now being used as a tool to silence the government’s political opposition through a weak judiciary system, leaving in its wake a democracy afraid to exercise its constitutionally guaranteed rights. This law is an unconstitutional violation for several reasons: first, it violates the right to freedom of expression which is guaranteed in Cambodia’s Constitution. Secondly, it is incompatible with Cambodia’s human rights obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Furthermore, it violates customary international law. This comment proposes that the Cambodian Parliament pass new a new civil defamation law which denies legal standing to the government. Legal standing should be denied to the government to safeguard against the potential abuse of any civil defamation law

    For the development of gelatinized dairy products that include emulsified pecan oil as an unsaturated fatty acid source the incorporation of hydrocolloids becomes necessary and their properties must be carefully selected. This work aimed to study gelatinized candies made with 0% milk fat dulce de leche with pre-emulsified pecan nut oil using combinations of gelatin (4.67 to 7 g/100 g) and high methoxyl pectin (1.33 to 2 g/100 g) as gelling agents. The effect of different drying methods (vacuum-oven at 35 °C for 24 h and freeze-drying) was evaluated. Control samples without drying were also studied. Dehydration conditions significantly (p < 0.05) affected aw, texture (hardness, cohesiveness, adhesiveness, gumminess, springiness, and resilience) and color parameters (L*, a*, b*) of products, being higher than the effect of the gelling agent. Formulations were selected based on texture and aw criteria and sensory evaluated by appearance, color, texture, taste, and overall acceptability. Two formulations (one with 7% gelatin and 1.33% high methoxyl pectin content, and the other with 2% high methoxyl pectin and 4.67% gelatin content), both with low moisture content and vacuum-dried, exhibited good acceptability. These pecan oildulce de leche gummy candies would represent a healthier candy version, low in saturated fatty acids, and source of oleic acid.Para o desenvolvimento de produtos lácteos gelatinizados que incluem óleo de nozes pecã emulsionado, como fonte de ácido graxo insaturado, a incorporação de hidrocoloides se torna necessária, e as propriedades devem ser cuidadosamente especificadas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar balas de goma feitas com doce de leite 0% de gordura de leite e com óleo de noz-pecã pré-emulsionado, utilizando combinações de gelatina (4,67 a 7 g/100 g) e pectina de alto grau de metoxilação (1,33 a 2 g/100 g) como agentes gelificantes. O efeito de diferentes métodos de secagem (estufa a vácuo a 35 °C por 24 h e liofilização) foi avaliado. Amostras-controle sem secagem também foram estudadas. As condições de desidratação afetaram significativamente (p < 0,05) a textura (dureza, coesividade, adesividade, gomosidade, elasticidade e resiliência) e os parâmetros de cor (L *, a *, b *) dos produtos, sendo superiores ao efeito do agente gelificante. As formulações foram selecionadas com base nos critérios de textura e aw, e avaliadas sensorialmente quanto a aparência, cor, textura, sabor e aceitabilidade geral. Duas formulações (uma com 7% de gelatina e 1,33% de pectina de alto grau de metoxilação e outra com 4,67% de gelatina e 2% de pectina de alto grau de metoxilação), ambas com baixo teor de umidade e secas a vácuo, apresentaram boa aceitabilidade. Essas balas de goma de de doce de leite com óleo de pecã representam uma versão mais saudável, com baixo teor de ácidos graxos saturados e fonte de ácido oleico.Fil: Ranalli, Natalia.     Designed multiple ligands (DMLs), developed to modulate simultaneously a number of selected targets involved in etiopathogenetic mechanisms of a multifactorial disease, such as diabetes mellitus (DM), are considered a promising alternative to combinations of drugs, when monotherapy results to be unsatisfactory. In this work, compounds 1–17 were synthesized and in vitro evaluated as DMLs directed to aldose reductase (AR) and protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), two key enzymes involved in different events which are critical for the onset and progression of type 2 DM and related pathologies. Out of the tested 4-thiazolidinone derivatives, compounds 12 and 16, which exhibited potent AR inhibitory effects along with interesting inhibition of PTP1B, can be assumed as lead compounds to further optimize and balance the dual inhibitory profile. Moreover, several structural portions were identified as features that could be useful to achieve simultaneous inhibition of both human AR and PTP1B through binding to non-catalytic regions of both target enzymes

    Evaluation of novel 4-(4-fluorobenzyl)piperazin-1-yl]-based compounds as competitive tyrosinase inhibitors endowed with anti-melanogenic effects

    There is a considerable attention for the development of inhibitors of tyrosinase (TYR) as therapeutic strategy for the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders in humans. Continuing in our efforts to identify TYR inhibitors, we describe the design, synthesis and pharmacophore exploration of new small molecules structurally characterized by the presence of the 4-fluorobenzylpiperazine moiety as key pharmacophoric feature for the inhibition of TYR from&nbsp; Agaricus bisporus (AbTYR).&nbsp;Our investigations resulted in the discovery of the competitive inhibitor [4-(4-fluorobenzyl)piperazin-1-yl]-(3-chloro-2-nitro-phenyl)methanone 26 (IC 50  = 0.18 μM) that proved to be ∼100-fold more active&nbsp;than reference compound kojic acid&nbsp;(IC 50  = 17.76 μM). Notably, compound 26 exerted anti-melanogenic effect on B16F10&nbsp;cells in absence of cytotoxicity. Docking analysis suggested its binding mode into AbTYR and into modelled human TYR
