Representations and -theory of Discrete Groups
Let be a discrete group of finite virtual cohomological dimension
with certain finiteness conditions of the type satisfied by arithmetic groups.
We define a representation ring for , determined on its elements of
finite order, which is of finite type. Then we determine the contribution of
this ring to the topological -theory , obtaining an exact
formula for the difference in terms of the cohomology of the centralizers of
elements of finite order in .Comment: 4 page
Critical role of lay health cultural brokers in promoting the health of immigrants and refugees: A case study in the United States of America
The United States of America, a home to immigrants and refugees from various cultures and corners of the world continues to encounter waves of mass immigration. Some immigrated due to well-founded fears of persecution (i.e. religious, political, race, or social group) or economic hardships. Others immigrated to, reunite with family members, seek economic and education opportunities, and better standards of living. Notwithstanding their channels of admission or entry and their pivotal role in enriching the culture and the economy of the United States of America, many confront several health and lifestyle related challenges as they acculturate and integrate into the mainstream of American life and culture. Although many individuals and organizations have created numerous programs and activities to help ease these difficulties, minimal documentation is available on the involvement and engagement of the non-traditional work force, such as the lay health cultural brokers
Severe malaria - a case of fatal Plasmodium knowlesi infection with post-mortem findings: a case report.
BACKGROUND: Zoonotic malaria caused by Plasmodium knowlesi is an important, but newly recognized, human pathogen. For the first time, post-mortem findings from a fatal case of knowlesi malaria are reported here.
CASE PRESENTATION: A formerly healthy 40 year-old male became symptomatic 10 days after spending time in the jungle of North Borneo. Four days later, he presented to hospital in a state of collapse and died within two hours. He was hyponatraemic and had elevated blood urea, potassium, lactate dehydrogenase and amino transferase values; he was also thrombocytopenic and eosinophilic. Dengue haemorrhagic shock was suspected and a post-mortem examination performed. Investigations for dengue virus were negative. Blood for malaria parasites indicated hyperparasitaemia and single species P. knowlesi infection was confirmed by nested-PCR. Macroscopic pathology of the brain and endocardium showed multiple petechial haemorrhages, the liver and spleen were enlarged and lungs had features consistent with ARDS. Microscopic pathology showed sequestration of pigmented parasitized red blood cells in the vessels of the cerebrum, cerebellum, heart and kidney without evidence of chronic inflammatory reaction in the brain or any other organ examined. Brain sections were negative for intracellular adhesion molecule-1. The spleen and liver had abundant pigment containing macrophages and parasitized red blood cells. The kidney had evidence of acute tubular necrosis and endothelial cells in heart sections were prominent.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall picture in this case was one of systemic malaria infection that fit the WHO classification for severe malaria. Post-mortem findings in this case were unexpectedly similar to those that define fatal falciparum malaria, including cerebral pathology. There were important differences including the absence of coma despite petechial haemorrhages and parasite sequestration in the brain. These results suggest that further study of knowlesi malaria will aid the interpretation of, often conflicting, information on malaria pathophysiology in humans
Oscillation criteria for third order neutral generalized difference equations with distributed delay
This paper aims to investigate the criteria of behaviour of certain type of third order neutral generalized difference equations with distributed delay. With the technique of generalized Riccati transformation and Philos-type method, some oscillation criteria are obtained to ensure convergence and oscillatory solution of suitable example is listed to illustrate the main result
Magnetodielectric and magnetoelastic coupling in TbFe3(BO3)4
We have studied the magnetodielectric and magnetoelastic coupling in
TbFe3(BO3)4 single crystals by means of capacitance, magnetostriction and Raman
spectroscopy measurements. The data reveal strong magnetic field effects on the
dielectric constant and on the macroscopic sample length which are associated
to long range magnetic ordering and a field-driven metamagnetic transition. We
discuss the coupling of the dielectric, structural, and magnetic order
parameters and attribute the origin of the magnetodielectric coupling to phonon
mode shifts according to the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller (LST) relation.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review
Following successful anti-leishmanial treatment, neutrophil counts, CD10 expression and phagocytic capacity remain reduced in visceral leishmaniasis patients co-infected with HIV
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) patients co-infected with HIV (VL/HIV patients) experience frequent treatment failures, VL relapses, opportunistic infections, and higher mortality. Their immune system remains profoundly suppressed after clinical cure and they maintain higher parasite load. This is in contrast with patients with VL alone (VL patients). Since neutrophils play a critical role in the control of Leishmania replication and the regulation of immune responses, we tested the hypothesis that neutrophil activation status and effector functions are fully restored in VL, but not in VL/HIV patients. Our results show the neutrophil counts and all activation markers and effector functions tested in our study were reduced at the time of diagnosis in VL and VL/HIV patients as compared to controls. CD62L, CD63, arginase 1 expression levels and reactive oxygen species production were restored at the end of treatment in both groups. However, neutrophil counts, CD10 expression and phagocytosis remained significantly lower throughout follow-up in VL/HIV patients; suggesting that dysregulated neutrophils contribute to the impaired host defence against pathogens in VL/HIV patients
IMMIGRANT YOUTH LEADERSHIP IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH SPORT PARTICIPATION IN A NEW COUNTRY
The purpose of the study was to explore how immigrant youth develop leadership identity through sport participation in a new country. A purposive sample of 15 immigrant and refugee youth participating in a local sport club in the southeastern United States was selected for the study. All of the participants were male; ranged in age from 13 to 18 years old. The country of origin for one was Mexico, while the remaining 14 came from eight different countries in sub-Saharan Africa. This instrumental case study involved in-depth interviews twice with each participant and a group interview with all of them. The researchers used several strategies to establish credibility, including adherence to IRB guidelines for human subjects’ research. Inductive analyses yielded two major categories with several themes for each; (a) sport participation, and (b) leadership skills. Findings related to these themes led to several implications for schools, community-based organizations, and sport clubs that provide programs for immigrant and refugee youth. Article visualizations
Extending structures I: the level of groups
Let be a group and a set such that . We shall describe
and classify up to an isomorphism of groups that stabilizes the set of all
group structures that can be defined on such that is a subgroup of .
A general product, which we call the unified product, is constructed such that
both the crossed product and the bicrossed product of two groups are special
cases of it. It is associated to and to a system called a group extending
structure and we denote it by . There exists a group structure on
containing as a subgroup if and only if there exists an isomorphism of
groups , for some group extending structure
. All such
group structures on are classified up to an isomorphism of groups that
stabilizes by a cohomological type set . A Schreier type theorem is proved and an explicit example is given: it
classifies up to an isomorphism that stabilizes all groups that contain
as a subgroup of index 2.Comment: 17 pages; to appear in Algebras and Representation Theor
