Kinetics of Surfactant Adsorption at Fluid/Fluid Interfaces: Non-ionic Surfactants
We present a model treating the kinetics of adsorption of soluble
surface-active molecules at the interface between an aqueous solution and
another fluid phase. The model accounts for both the diffusive transport inside
the solution and the kinetics taking place at the interface using a free-energy
formulation. In addition, it offers a general method of calculating dynamic
surface tensions. Non-ionic surfactants are shown, in general, to undergo a
diffusion-limited adsorption, in accord with experimental findings.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, see also cond-mat/960814
Search for Lorentz Invariance and CPT Violation with the MINOS Far Detector
We searched for a sidereal modulation in the MINOS far detector neutrino rate. Such a signal would be
a consequence of Lorentz and CPT violation as described by the standard-model extension framework. It
also would be the first detection of a perturbative effect to conventional neutrino mass oscillations. We
found no evidence for this sidereal signature, and the upper limits placed on the magnitudes of the Lorentz
and CPT violating coefficients describing the theory are an improvement by factors of 20â510 over the
current best limits found by using the MINOS near detector
Improved Measurement of Muon Antineutrino Disappearance in MINOS
We report an improved measurement of νĚ
_Îź disappearance over a distance of 735 km using the MINOS detectors and the Fermilab Main Injector neutrino beam in a νĚ
_Îź-enhanced configuration. From a total exposure of 2.95Ă10^20 protons on target, of which 42% have not been previously analyzed, we make the most precise measurement of ÎmĚ
^2=[2.62_(-0.28)^(+0.31)(stat)Âą0.09(syst)]Ă10^(-3)ââeV^2 and constrain the ν_Îź mixing angle sin^(2)(2θĚ
)>0.75 (90% C.L.). These values are in agreement with Îm^2 and sin^(2)(2θ) measured for νΟ, removing the tension reported in [ P. Adamson et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 107 021801 (2011)]
âIn the Grip of Traditionalism? How Nigerian Middle-Class Working Mothers Navigate Normative Ideals of Femininity
Changing socio-economic conditions are enticing more and more Nigerian mothers to work and pursue careers. This article explores how middle-class professional women navigate working mother subjectivities in the context of Nigeriaâs strong patriarchal culture, where traditional notions of maternal femininity prevail. We argue that the working mother subjectivity is a key site where the struggle over gendered cultural meanings takes place. Drawing on 32 qualitative interviews, we demonstrate how a small group of women refused traditional feminine subject positions; however, most either embraced or reluctantly acquiesced to them, despite having access to broader cultural repertoires and material resources. By unveiling the complexities of the cultural appeal of traditional femininity and social penalties for breaching it, the article extends our understanding of how patriarchal cultures resist gendered change and the nuances and limits of individual patterns of resistance
First observations of separated atmospheric ν_Îź and Î˝Ě _Îź events in the MINOS detector
The complete 5.4 kton MINOS far detector has been taking data since the beginning of August 2003 at a
depth of 2070 meters water-equivalent in the Soudan mine, Minnesota. This paper presents the first
MINOS observations of ν_Îź and νĚ
_Îź charged-current atmospheric neutrino interactions based on an
exposure of 418 days. The ratio of upward- to downward-going events in the data is compared to the
Monte Carlo expectation in the absence of neutrino oscillations, giving R^(data)_(up/down/R^(MC)_(up/down) =
0:62^(+0.19)_(0:14)(stat.) Âą 0.02(sys.). An extended maximum likelihood analysis of the observed L/E distributions
excludes the null hypothesis of no neutrino oscillations at the 98% confidence level. Using the curvature of
the observed muons in the 1.3 T MINOS magnetic field ν_Îź and νĚ
_Îź interactions are separated. The ratio of
νĚ
_Ο to ν_Ο events in the data is compared to the Monte Carlo expectation assuming neutrinos and
antineutrinos oscillate in the same manner, giving R^(data)_(ν_Îź/νĚ
_Îź) / R^(MC)_(ν_Îź/νĚ
_Îź) = 0.96^(+0:38)_(0.27)(stat.) Âą 0.15(sys.), where
the errors are the statistical and systematic uncertainties. Although the statistics are limited, this is the first
direct observation of atmospheric neutrino interactions separately for ν_Îź and νĚ
_Îź

To investigate the effects of psychosocial interventions versus no intervention on quality of life and psychosocial outcomes in adults undergoing strabismus surgery. The primary objective is to assess whether patients who have taken part in a sychosocial intervention prior to their strabismus surgery report signiďŹcantly improved quality of life compared to those who receive standard care,i.e. strabismus surgery alone. The secondary outcome measures will include anxiety, depression, social anxiety and social avoidance, as well as degree of success in terms of surgical outcome
What is in a pebble shape?
We propose to characterize the shapes of flat pebbles in terms of the
statistical distribution of curvatures measured along the pebble contour. This
is demonstrated for the erosion of clay pebbles in a controlled laboratory
apparatus. Photographs at various stages of erosion are analyzed, and compared
with two models. We find that the curvature distribution complements the usual
measurement of aspect ratio, and connects naturally to erosion processes that
are typically faster at protruding regions of high curvature.Comment: Phys. Rev. Lett. (to appear
Deformation of a nearly hemispherical conducting drop due to an electric field: theory and experiment
We consider, both theoretically and experimentally, the deformation due to an electric field of a pinned nearly-hemispherical static sessile drop of an ionic fluid with a high conductivity resting on the lower substrate of a parallel plate capacitor. Using both numerical and asymptotic approaches we find solutions to the coupled electrostatic and augmented YoungâLaplace equations which agree very well with the experimental results. Our asymptotic solution for the drop interface extends previous work in two ways, namely to drops that have zero-field contact angles that are not exactly Ď/2 and to higher order in the applied electric field, and provides useful predictive equations for the changes in the height, contact angle and pressure as functions of the zero-field contact angle, drop radius, surface tension and applied electric field. The asymptotic solution requires some numerical computations, and so a surprisingly accurate approximate analytical asymptotic solution is also obtained
Limits on Active to Sterile Neutrino Oscillations from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments
Searches for a light sterile neutrino have been performed independently by the MINOS and the Daya Bay experiments using the muon (anti)neutrino and electron antineutrino disappearance channels, respectively. In this Letter, results from both experiments are combined with those from the Bugey-3 reactor neutrino experiment to constrain oscillations into light sterile neutrinos. The three experiments are sensitive to complementary regions of parameter space, enabling the combined analysis to probe regions allowed by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) and MiniBooNE experiments in a minimally extended four-neutrino flavor framework. Stringent limits on sin 2 2θ_(Îźe) are set over 6 orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting Îm^2_(41). The sterile-neutrino mixing phase space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments is excluded for Îm^2_(41) <0.8ââeV^2 at 95%ââCL_s
