    We show that the N=1{\cal N}=1 supergravity theories in ten dimensions with gauge groups U(1)496U(1)^{496} and E8×U(1)248E_8 \times U(1)^{248} are not consistent quantum theories. Cancellation of anomalies cannot be made compatible with supersymmetry and abelian gauge invariance.     This article examines economic incentives and other mechanisms to offset non-point source pollution from agriculture. A biophysical simulator to estimate technical relationships is linked to linear programming models for representative farms in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The models are then optimized for profit maximization under alternative non-point pollution control policies. The results indicate that site-specific resource conditions and production possibilities greatly influence policy effectiveness and the cost of achieving pollution abatement.     Comparative ploidy response to experimental hydrogen peroxide exposure in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

    While research into the growth, survival, nutrition and, more recently, disease susceptibility of triploid Atlantic salmon has expanded, there remains an overall lack of studies assessing the response of triploids to chemical treatments. It is essential that the response of triploids to disease treatments be characterised to validate their suitability for commercial production. This study aimed to investigate and compare the stress and immune responses of triploid and diploid Atlantic salmon following an experimental treatment with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). A dose response test was first undertaken to determine a suitable test dose for both diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon. Following this, diploids and triploids were exposed to H2O2 (1800 ppm) for 20 min, as per commercial practices, after which blood glucose and lactate, and plasma cortisol and lysozyme were measured, along with the expression of oxidative stress and immune-related genes. In the first 6 h post-exposure to H2O2, comparable mortalities occurred in both diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon. Cortisol, glucose and lactate were not significantly influenced by ploidy suggesting that, physiologically, triploid Atlantic salmon are able to cope with the stress associated with H2O2 exposure as well as their diploid counterparts. Exposure to H2O2 significantly elevated the expression of cat and sod2 in diploid livers and gr, il1β and crp/sap1b in diploid gills, while it significantly decreased the expression of saa5 and crp/sap1a in diploid gills. In triploids, the expression levels of cat, hsp70, sod1, saa5, crp/sap1a and crp/sap1b in liver was significantly higher in fish exposed to H2O2 compared to control fish. The expression of gr, sod1 and il1β in triploid gills was also elevated in response to H2O2 exposure. This study represents the first experimental evidence of the effects of H2O2 exposure on triploid Atlantic salmon and continues to support their application into commercial production

    Fuzzy Rings in D6-Branes and Magnetic Field Background

    We use the Myers T-dual nonabelin Born-Infeld action to find some new nontrivial solutions for the branes in the background of D6-branes and Melvin magnetic tube field. In the D6-Branes background we can find both of the fuzzy sphere and fuzzy ring solutions, which are formed by the gravitational dielectric effect. We see that the fuzzy ring solution has less energy then that of the fuzzy sphere. Therefore the fuzzy sphere will decay to the fuzzy ring configuration. In the Melvin magnetic tube field background there does not exist fuzzy sphere while the fuzzy ring configuration may be formed by the magnetic dielectric effect. The new solution shows that D0D_0 propagating in the D6-branes and magnetic tube field background may expand into a rotating fuzzy ring.     Towards a Non-Relativistic Holographic Superfluid

    We explore the phase structure of a holographic toy model of superfluid states in non-relativistic conformal field theories. At low background mass density, we find a familiar second-order transition to a superfluid phase at finite temperature. Increasing the chemical potential for the probe charge density drives this transition strongly first order as the low-temperature superfluid phase merges with a thermodynamically disfavored high-temperature condensed phase. At high background mass density, the system reenters the normal phase as the temperature is lowered further, hinting at a zero-temperature quantum phase transition as the background density is varied. Given the unusual thermodynamics of the background black hole, however, it seems likely that the true ground state is another configuration altogether.Comment: 13+5 pages, late

    On the CSFT approach to localized closed string tachyons

    We compute the potential for localized closed string tachyons in bosonic string theory on the orbifold C/Z_4 using level-truncated closed string field theory. The critical points of the potential exhibit features which agree with their conjectured identification as lower-order orbifolds.     We discuss fluctuations on solitons in the dilaton/graviton/tachyon system using the low energy effective field theory approach.     Socioeconomic status is associated with symptom severity and sickness absence in people with infectious intestinal disease in the UK

    BACKGROUND: The burden of infectious intestinal disease (IID) in the UK is substantial. Negative consequences including sickness absence are common, but little is known about the social patterning of these outcomes, or the extent to which they relate to disease severity. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using IID cases identified from a large population-based survey, to explore the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and symptom severity and sickness absence; and to assess the role of symptom severity on the relationship between SES and absence. Regression modelling was used to investigate these associations, whilst controlling for potential confounders such as age, sex and ethnicity. RESULTS: Among 1164 cases, those of lower SES versus high had twice the odds of experiencing severe symptoms (OR 2.2, 95%CI;1.66-2.87). Lower SES was associated with higher odds of sickness absence (OR 1.8, 95%CI;1.26-2.69), however this association was attenuated after adjusting for symptom severity (OR 1.4, 95%CI;0.92-2.07). CONCLUSIONS: In a large sample of IID cases, those of low SES versus high were more likely to report severe symptoms, and sickness absence; with greater severity largely explaining the higher absence. Public health interventions are needed to address the unequal consequences of IID identified

    Socioeconomic status and infectious intestinal disease in the community: a longitudinal study (IID2 study).

    Infectious intestinal diseases (IID) are common, affecting around 25% of people in UK each year at an estimated annual cost to the economy, individuals and the NHS of £1.5 billion. While there is evidence of higher IID hospital admissions in more disadvantaged groups, the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and risk of IID remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the relationship between SES and IID in a large community cohort.Longitudinal analysis of a prospective community cohort in the UK following 6836 participants of all ages was undertaken. Hazard ratios for IID by SES were estimated using Cox proportional hazard, adjusting for follow-up time and potential confounding factors.In the fully adjusted analysis, hazard ratio of IID was significantly lower among routine/manual occupations compared with managerial/professional occupations (HR 0.74, 95% CI 0.61-0.90).In this large community cohort, lower SES was associated with lower IID risk. This may be partially explained by the low response rate which varied by SES. However, it may be related to differences in exposure or recognition of IID symptoms by SES. Higher hospital admissions associated with lower SES observed in some studies could relate to more severe consequences, rather than increased infection risk
