    House Flies: Manure, Media, and Microbes

    This study was conducted to determine if there is a difference in bacterial abundance in house flies based on sex and rearing environment (manure versus artificial media) for house flies. This is important in determining the effectiveness of the facilities where the flies are being raised. Although, previous studies have shown differences in bacterial abundance between male and female house flies, it still remains unknown whether there is a discrepancy in bacterial abundance between rearing environments in the lab. We hypothesized that there would be a greater abundance of bacteria in females than males and a greater bacterial abundance in the manure environment than the artificial media. We determined that there was no significant difference between house fly sex or the environments in which they were raised. These results are meaningful because they introduce evidence of forced interaction that could skew the bacterial counts. In the future, the results would be more telling with a larger sample size.

A female is the human form provided in this instance and she combines her own energy with that of the other characters though she is not conscious of this fact. The archetypal energies focus on the female from her moment of entry into physical limitation to her reluctant acceptance of the hidden aspects of Self and her inevitable return to the black box

    For love or reward? Characterising preference for giving to parents in an experimental setting

    This paper examines the motivation for intergenerational transfers between adult children and their parents, and the nature of preferences for such giving behaviour, in an experimental setting. Participants in our experiment play a series of dictator games with parents and strangers, in which we vary endowments and prices for giving to each recipient. We find that preferences for giving are typically rational. When parents are recipients as opposed to strangers, participants display greater sensitivity to the price of giving, and a higher relative proclivity for giving. Our findings also provide evidence of reciprocal motivations for giving, as players give more to parents who have full information regarding the context in which giving occurs

    Transverse Momentum Correlations in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

    From the correlation structure of transverse momentum ptp_t in relativistic nuclear collisions we observe for the first time temperature/velocity structure resulting from low-Q2Q^2 partons. Our novel analysis technique does not invoke an {\em a priori} jet hypothesis. ptp_t autocorrelations derived from the scale dependence of fluctuations reveal a complex parton dissipation process in RHIC heavy ion collisions.     Observation of discrete energy levels in a quantum confined system

    Low temperature scanning tunneling microscope images and spectroscopic data have been obtained on subnanometer size Pb clusters fabricated using the technique of buffer layer assisted growth. Discrete energy levels were resolved in current-voltage characteristics as current peaks rather than current steps. Distributions of peak voltage spacings and peak current heights were consistent with Wigner-Dyson and Porter-Thomas distributions respectively, suggesting the relevance of random matrix theory to the description of the electronic eigenstates of the clusters. The observation of peaks rather than steps in the current-voltage characteristics is attributed to a resonant tunneling process involving the discrete energy levels of the cluster, the tip, and the states at the interface between the cluster and the substrate surface.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Signatures of Random Matrix Theory in the Discrete Energy Spectra of Subnanosize Metallic Clusters

    Lead clusters deposited on Si(111) substrates have been studied at low temperatures using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. The current-voltage characteristics exhibit current peaks that are irregularly spaced and varied in height. The statistics of the distribution of peak heights and spacings are in agreement with random matrix theory for several clusters.     Ptychographic hyperspectral spectromicroscopy with an extreme ultraviolet high harmonic comb

    We demonstrate a new scheme of spectromicroscopy in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral range, where the spectral response of the sample at different wavelengths is imaged simultaneously. It is enabled by applying ptychographical information multiplexing (PIM) to a tabletop EUV source based on high harmonic generation, where four spectrally narrow harmonics near 30 nm form a spectral comb structure. Extending PIM from previously demonstrated visible wavelengths to the EUV/X-ray wavelengths promises much higher spatial resolution and more powerful spectral contrast mechanism, making PIM an attractive spectromicroscopy method in both the microscopy and the spectroscopy aspects. Besides the sample, the multicolor EUV beam is also imaged in situ, making our method a powerful beam characterization technique. No hardware is used to separate or narrow down the wavelengths, leading to efficient use of the EUV radiation

    The absolute position of a resonance peak

    It is common practice in scattering theory to correlate between the position of a resonance peak in the cross section and the real part of a complex energy of a pole of the scattering amplitude. In this work we show that the resonance peak position appears at the absolute value of the pole's complex energy rather than its real part. We further demonstrate that a local theory of resonances can still be used even in cases previously thought impossible
