    I present an internal problem for David Lewis’s genuine modal realism. My aim is to show that his analysis of modality is inconsistent with his metaphysics. I consider several ways of modifying the Lewisian analysis of modality, but argue that none are successful. I argue that the problem also affects theories related to genuine modal realism, including the stage theory of persistence and modal fictionalism

    Stocking levels for lodgepole pine

Below the lower end of this range the site is not fully utilized and above the upper limits of this range the stand is stagnated and optimum growth is not realized. This study developed a method for defining the optimum range of stocking for lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl.) in Colorado and southern Wyoming. The procedure for defining the upper limit of the stocking range was based upon basal area growth rate per tree as a function of stand density. An extension of this relationship provided a curve of basal area growth per acre over stand density for each diameter class. These curves revealed the density at which the peak of basal area growth rate occurred for each class. Basal aera per acre at the peak of basal area growth, when curved over the corresponding stand density for each diameter class, formed the upper limit of the "full-stocking" range. The second part of the study, the establishment of minimum stocking levels for full site occupancy, consisted of an analysis of open-grown trees. It was reasoned that competition between trees. It was reasoned that competition between trees begins at a point where the available growing space in a stand is just equal to the total open-grown, tree-area requirements of all the trees in the stand. The relationship between crown area and diameter breast height was established for the diameters involved. Dividing the area of one acre by the crown area of a tree of a given diameter provided the theoretical number of open-growth trees of this size that could fully occupy the site. The basal area per acre represented by this number of trees was next calculated. The curve delimiting the lower end of the desirable stocking range was then constructed by plotting basal area per acre over the corresponding number of trees per acre. A procedure was developed by which the change in stocking over time might be estimated for use with the established stocking range. This part of the study involved a graphical solution based upon the diameter-age relationship. A rate of change curve was developed for each of three density classes. The full stocking range, as developed in this study, can be used as a guide to the silvicultural needs of a stand. Two stand parameters, average tree diameter and number of trees per acre, are needed to determine the basal area per acre required to fall within the acceptable stocking range. Through the use of these stocking curves, management decisions can be based upon definite guidelines instead of subjective judgements concerning the stand stocking situation

    In 1952, two well-known characters called 'A' and 'B' met for the first time to argue about the Identity of Indiscernibles (Black, 1952). A argued that the principle is true, and B that it is false. By all accounts A took a bit of a beating and came out worst-off. Forty-three years later John O’Leary-Hawthorne offered a response on behalf of A that looked as if it would work so long as A was willing to accept the universal-bundle theory of substance (Hawthorne, 1995). In 1997, A and B met again (Zimmerman, 1997). A took Hawthorne's advice and revealed himself as a universal-bundle theorist. But B was well-prepared, and once more A took a beating. Since then Gonzalo Rodriguez-Pereyra (2004) has put the boot in, offering further criticism of A's position. In recent years A has been rather quiet, leaving B to reign as the undisputed champion. However, it turns out that A is down, but not out. And now it's time for A's revenge

    Empowering the next generation of actors through the creation of student-centred self-devised dramatic work

    There has been a demise of many Australian theatre companies over the past 20 years, along with a decrease in long-form television series. As a result, there is less work available for graduating actors from conservatoires. In this precarious landscape, acting conservatoires need to appraise how actors are trained and assess how to better empower them as independent artists. One such approach is the development of devised theatre work within a conservatoire actor training structure. This article charts the development of a new devised work and the dynamics involved in theatre co-creation via student-centred collaboration. Our research examines the existing pedagogical practices in the current curriculum of the Bachelor of Arts (Acting) course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and explores potential changes that may be implemented to the current curriculum. We suggest there is room to enhance the program, encourage resilience in the next generation of actors and contribute new approaches through the creation of devised work. The results of our study aim to encourage and foster agency for student actors, developing necessary skills for creating their own work and empowering their choices as artists

    Overexpressed Cavbeta3 inhibits N-type (Cav2.2) calcium channel currents through a hyperpolarizing shift of 'ultra-slow' and 'closed-state' inactivation

    It has been shown that beta auxiliary subunits increase current amplitude in voltage-dependent calcium channels. In this study, however, we found a novel inhibitory effect of beta3 subunit on macroscopic Ba2+ currents through recombinant N- and R-type calcium channels expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Overexpressed beta3 (12.5 ng/cell cRNA) significantly suppressed N- and R-type, but not L-type, calcium channel currents at 'physiological' holding potentials (HPs) of -60 and -80 mV. At a HP of -80 mV, coinjection of various concentrations (0-12.5 ng) of the beta3 with Cav2.2alpha1 and alpha2delta enhanced the maximum conductance of expressed channels at lower beta3 concentrations but at higher concentrations (>2.5 ng/cell) caused a marked inhibition. The beta3-induced current suppression was reversed at a HP of -120 mV, suggesting that the inhibition was voltage dependent. A high concentration of Ba2+ (40 mM) as a charge carrier also largely diminished the effect of beta3 at -80 mV. Therefore, experimental conditions (HP, divalent cation concentration, and beta3 subunit concentration) approaching normal physiological conditions were critical to elucidate the full extent of this novel beta3 effect. Steady-state inactivation curves revealed that N-type channels exhibited 'closed-state' inactivation without beta3, and that beta3 caused an approximately 40-mV negative shift of the inactivation, producing a second component with an inactivation midpoint of approximately -85 mV. The inactivation of N-type channels in the presence of a high concentration (12.5 ng/cell) of beta3 developed slowly and the time-dependent inactivation curve was best fit by the sum of two exponential functions with time constants of 14 s and 8.8 min at -80 mV. Similar 'ultra-slow' inactivation was observed for N-type channels without beta3. Thus, beta3 can have a profound negative regulatory effect on N-type (and also R-type) calcium channels by causing a hyperpolarizing shift of the inactivation without affecting `ultra-slow' and `closed-state' inactivation properties
