    Three-Particle Azimuthal Correlations

    Get PDF
Two-particle azimuthal correlations in central Au+Au collisional at RHIC have revealed a broadened away-side structure, with respect to perpherial Au+Au, pp, and d+Au. This could be explained by different physics mechanisms such as: large angle gluon radiation, deflected jets, Cerenkov gluon radiation, and conical flow generated by hydrodynamic shock-waves. We can discriminate the scenarios with conical emission, Cerenkov radiation and conical flow, from the other mechanisms though three-particle correlations. In addition, the associated particle pT dependence can be used to distinguish conical flow from simple Cerenkov gluon radiation. We will discuss three-particle correlation analyses that have been performed at RHIC and what can be done at the LHC.Comment: Talk given at 'High p_T physics at the LHC', Jyvaskyla, Finland, March 200

The study was conducted in a small rural Texas district. Students within the district were struggling with successful writing initiatives. Achievement and accountability within the district were below state and regional averages consistently for many years. Writing instruction in the district needed attention to help students and teachers experience writing success. The study aimed to answer the following research questions: (1) What instructional practices do Frazier ISD teachers utilize to teach writing? (2) What aspects of writing do Frazier ISD students struggle to understand? (3) To what extent does the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test impact writing success at Frazier ISD? And (4) How do teachers and students describe the learning process associated with writing at Frazier ISD? A mixed methods approach was utilized to gather information and data on writing in the Frazier ISD. Information was gathered from interviews with teachers and students, and surveys administered to teachers and students. The data indicated areas of: inconsistent instruction, struggles for teachers and students, disgust for state assessment, and unpredictable learning opportunities. The results of the study solidified a need for writing instruction that was consistent, and not STAAR assessment driven. The need for quality writing instruction was across all grade levels and content areas. Study results also indicated a strong need for on-going professional development on how to incorporate writing effectively to impact student learning and growth

Quinclorac and Aminocyclopyrachlor Movement in Sandy Soils of the Sheyenne National Grassland, and Control of Yellow Toadflax with Aminocyclopyrachlor

Quinclorac and aminocyclopyrachlor leaching potential was evaluated in replicated field conditions in soil from five ecological sites of the Sheyenne National Grassland (SNG). Herbicide concentration was estimated using bioassays. Quinclorac did not leach past approximately 45 cm following 51 cm of precipitation applied over 9 wk and 15 cm of precipitation applied over 48 h. Aminocyclopyrachlor leaching was greater than quinclorac and moved through all soil types following both precipitation events. Quinclorac is suitable for use at the SNG to control leafy spurge; however, aminocyclopyrachlor will not be recommended. Control of yellow toadflax with aminocyclopyrachlor was evaluated at four growth stages. Control averaged 98% 1 YAT when aminocyclopyrachlor was applied before flowering but only 50% when the herbicide was applied to the fall vegetative stage. Yellow toadflax control with picloram plus dicamba plus diflufenzopyr averaged 92% 1 YAT and was not affected by growth stage

Space debris, most commonly known as space junk, has become a problematic issue for the orbit placement of satellites. They can cause serious damage or disable costly systems and can potentially produce injuries to astronauts on missions in outer space. Space Agencies like NASA and more recently ESA have put in place several programs for space debris tracking, using a combination of optical and radio telescopes. These programs currently survey almost 20 000 debris pieces larger than 5 cm. Portugal is considering becoming a member of the Space Survey and Tracking (SST) program using the Azores as a platform for the installation of a radar, capable of tracking debris objects in the sky between 300 – 1800 km. In order to investigate the properties required for such a space infrastructure, one needs to model radio telescope responses. This dissertation lays out fundamental radar principles for the operational needs of a radar, notions of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), Radar Cross Section (RCS), pulse integration techniques are presented along the way. These principles were used for performance simulation of the soon to be installed antenna in Flores, Azores in a monostatic configuration. The calculated values show the antenna’s capability in detecting medium to low sized orbital debris in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). For comparison reasons, the performance of another Azorean radar in a more powerful setup was also shown in order to demonstrate the necessary detection capabilities in Geostationary Orbit (GEO)Os detritos espaciais, normalmente designados por lixo espacial, têm-se tornado num assunto problemático para a colocação orbital de satélites.

Quantifying the Effect of Coronagraphs on Planet Photometry with the James Webb Space Telescope

The launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in 2021 will revolutionize exoplanetary science by providing detailed characterizations of exoplanets within the infrared range of 3–13 microns. This is of particular interest to the field of direct imaging, where empirical models that remove excess starlight from imaged extrasolar systems have proven vital to the discovery of exoplanets. pyKLIP is one of the most modern python libraries with such capabilities, allowing its users to reveal exoplanets hidden behind the starlight. However, the pyKLIP algorithms are not presently able to handle coronagraph usage with the incoming JWST data. In preparation for the launch of this telescope, we upgraded pyKLIPs ability to correct for a coronagraph's effect on the throughput of off-axis sources when determining photometry. Given the coronagraph's transmission profile, pyKLIP v2.2 is now able to successfully account for each of NIRCam's five coronagraphs

Coordinating Cross-Border Bankruptcy: How Territorialism Saves Universalism

This article explores the difficulties of coordinating cross-border bankruptcies. These difficulties arise from the lack of a binding set of uniform international rules, forcing multinational businesses to look to domestic laws for guidance. The problem is that without coordinated, concurrent insolvency proceedings, an effective reorganization of a multinational corporation is impossible because a multitude of separate judgments ultimately leads to the dismemberment of a debtor\u27s estate. To address this challenge, an increasing number of countries – including the United States and several European countries such as Germany, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the United Kingdom – have enacted a Model Law on cross-border insolvency. This legal development has awoken the debate between territorialism and universalism with new fervor. Traditionally, territorialism allows the bankruptcy court of a particular jurisdiction to apply its laws, for the benefit of its jurisdictional creditors, whereas universalism requires all involved jurisdictions to relinquish their sovereignty and apply the law of a foreign jurisdiction. The Model Law is based on a modified universalist concept with significant territorialist elements. It envisions that one court will coordinate the insolvency proceedings of a multinational enterprise, no matter where its assets and creditors are found. Thus far, the debate between territorialism and universalism has focused on the respective strengths and weaknesses of each system, and the Model Law has been lauded for its universalist strengths and condemned for its alleged failure to protect domestic creditors. However, this Article argues that the Model Law\u27s combination of territorialist and universalist features will make it successful in achieving its goals of efficiency, cost savings, and predictability. More specifically, this Article suggests that the Model Law\u27s territorialist aspects, rather than its universalist aspects, will protect the interests of domestic creditors and other stakeholders. Finally, the Article concludes that the United States\u27 enactment of the Model Law is a major step toward international cooperation for the United States and that domestic businesses will only be advantaged by this new cooperative approach. Algebraic invariants, mutation, and commensurability of link complements

We construct a family of hyperbolic link complements by gluing tangles along totally geodesic four-punctured spheres, then investigate the commensurability relation among its members. Those with different volume are incommensurable, distinguished by their scissors congruence classes. Mutation produces arbitrarily large finite subfamilies of nonisometric manifolds with the same volume and scissors congruence class. Depending on the choice of mutation, these manifolds may be commensurable or incommensurable, distinguished in the latter case by cusp parameters. All have trace field Q(i,\sqrt{2}), but some have integral traces while others do not.Comment: Minor changes following referee's suggestion

Analysis Method for Jet-Like Three-Particle Azimuthal Correlations

Jet-like three-particle azimuthal correlations can discriminate various physical scenarios that have been proposed to explain the observed strong modification to two-particle azimuthal correlations. The three-particle correlation analysis is notoriously difficult in heavy-ion collisions due to the large combinatoric backgrounds. We describe the general idea behind the jet-like three-particle azimuthal correlation analysis, with emphasis put on the subtraction of the combinatoric backgrounds. We discuss in detail the various systematic effects in such an analysis.Comment: This is the final published version in NIM
