Modern electronic devices development steady trends toward miniaturization and multifunctionality. The application of such advanced devices is often realised by superimposing two different effects. In recent years, there was great interest shown in multiferroic materials in form laminated heterostructures taking advantage of mentioned superposition. In these stacked structured electric and magnetic properties are strain coupled leading to the possibility of controlling either magnetic polarization by application of electric fields or electric polarization by means of applied magnetic fields. In this paper novel construction of piezoelectric transformer was proposed with electric current induced magnetic field generation, without any coil or wires. This magnetoelectric laminate Piezoelectric Transformer from one layers of investigated piezoelectric material and second layer of commercial magnetostrictor was fabricated. This construction exhibits many interesting and unusual piezomagnetic properties and a demonstration of output voltage gain controlling via the application of magnetic field across the new heterostructure is presented

Itch is a difficult to treat symptom that may accompany neoplastic disease. At least some of the itch symptoms are due to abnormal endogenous opioid synthesis in the liver. In the past opioid receptor antagonists were found useful to treat itch in such patients. However, their use is limited by the abstinence symptoms experienced by the patient. Another approach would be to use an opioid with high affinity and slow dissociation from the receptor not to allow endogenous opioids to interact with the opioid receptors. In this paper we describe a patient with severe itch due to hepatocellular cancer who responded to the treatment with buprenorphine.Itch is a difficult to treat symptom that may accompany neoplastic disease. In the hereby paper the implications of thermal modification of BaBi2Nb2O9 ceramics in high vacuum (5×10-11 bar) at a temperature equal of 1173K are widely discussed. The mentioned modification caused changes in the ions concentration (confirmed by EDS and XPS analysis) and as a consequence an influence on the value of the unit cell parameters as well as on the dielectric and relaxor properties of described ceramics. The obtained results of EDS and XPS analysis of the sample before and after thermal treatment revealed bismuth ions diffusion to the surface of the sample (which was expected) and an almost complete the lack of barium ions on the modified surface. The comparison of EDS and XPS analysis results, suggested that they penetrated the interior of the sample and embedded into the crystal structure in place of bismuth. The hypothesis is in good agreement with the results of X-ray diffraction-the volume of the unit cell had an insignificant increase. The changes in the ions concentration influenced, also in a distinct manner, the dielectric and relaxor properties as well as on the shape of temperature characteristic of thermal stimulated depolarization current observed in BBN ceramics

The material of the study was lead-free BaFe0.5Nb0.5O3 ceramics subject to modification. The base composition BaFe0.5Nb0.5O3 as well as the chromium, lithium and manganese modified ones were obtained using conventional mixed oxides and carbonates method. Synthesis was performed by the powder calcination method at high temperature 1250 ◦ C for 4 h, while the densification was carried out by free sintering method under conditions 1350 ◦ C/4 h. The paper presents a complex study of admixtures influence on the crystal structure, microstructure and dielectric properties of the BFN type samples. The mentioned dopants chromium, lithium or manganese in the BFN-type ceramics among other caused the reduction of the electric permittivity maximum as well as significant decrease in value of dielectric loss

Microsporum (M.) canis is the most common fungus to cause tinea capitis in Europe, especially in the Mediterranean region and South and Central Europe. Fungal scalp infections caused by M. canis tend to be non-inflammatory. Recently, a growing number of cases of tinea capitis characterized by inflammatory infection caused by M. canis and M. gypseum have been registered. We present a case of highly inflammatory tinea capitis, also known as kerion celsi, caused by M. canis in a 6-year-old-patient. Scalp infections due to M. canis are a growing problem in dermatological practice. Changes in epidemiology, etiology, and clinical patterns of fungal infections due to M. canis are significant. Greater awareness of this problem is needed in order to establish proper diagnosis and successful treatment strategy for these patients. </p

Scared to death or scared to love? : terror management theory and close relationships seeking

To cope with paralyzing terror awakened by thoughts of their own death people usually use two defense mechanisms: cultural worldview and self-esteem. Recent studies suggest that also close relationships may function as a death anxiety buffer. The present research explores this phenomenon in an experimental paradigm. One hundred sixteen undergraduates completed a self-esteem scale, attachment scale, and a scale tapping ideal mate characteristics. After experimental manipulation each participant talked shortly with six unknown students of the opposite sex and rated their attractiveness. The results showed no effect of self-esteem either in the experimental or control condition. As for the attachment styles, we obtained significant interaction of avoidance and condition (non-avoidant participants were more favorable under mortality salience), and simple effect of anxiety (anxious participants increased the assessments regardless of the condition). Both effects were short-term and affected only the assessments of the first date

The level of fundamental qualities of somatic structure and physical fitness of young classical dancers in comparison to their peers practising acrobatic gymnastics – a comparative analysis

Classical (academic) dance, colloquially called ballet, is associated with subtlety and incredible grace of movement. Despite the fact that there has been ages from the creation of ballet, the undoubted beauty and airiness of the forms presented by the dancers make ballet still very popular throughout the world. Ballet is a kind of theatrical show with such fundamental elements as music, choreography and movement. Considering a ballet performance (obviously in a great simplification) and analysing it solely and exclusively within the aforementioned elements, it may be assumed that there is a parallel between the elements of classical dance and an acrobatic routine presented during competitions. Music, choreography and movement are essential in acrobatics as well. The aim of this study is to compare the level of somatic qualities (body height and weight) and the characteristics of fundamental qualities of physical fitness (agility, strength, flexibility, liveliness) of ballet dancers, as well as presenting their results in comparison to dancers’ peers practising acrobatic gymnastics. The results of the analysis indicate that dancers are significantly taller than acrobats also when compared to the standards described in Drozdowski’s „Dzieci Polski Zachodniej”. The adopted assumption of a lower level of general physical fitness of classical dancers in comparison to acrobats has been confirmed. At the same time, in an attempt to measure the flexibility of the body, a statistical difference has been observed within a group of 12-year old girls only

    Fournier's gangrene – a clinical case report

    Get PDF
Fournier’s gangrene is an acute, rapidly progressive, necrotizing infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues surrounding the genitals and perineum. Necrotizing fasciitis of the genital area is a rare disease entity. Although it concerns mostly males, can also occur in females and adolescents. In this syndrome, bacteria produce gases which accumulate in the infected tissue. The damage may also comprise tissue of the penis and scrotum. The infection is caused by aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Usually the Fournier’s gangrene is caused by Staphylococci, Streptococci and Enteric bacteria. Bacterial infection can accompany the fungal infection. The high mortality rate is associated with bacterial contagion of the skin, fat, fascia and blood vessels. Harmful enzymes, produced by micro-organisms, induce numerous blood clots. They can lead to ischemia, which contribute to the development of necrosis. Fournier’s syndrome is a disease with a high mortality rate. Immunodeficiency, diabetes and chronic alcohol abuse favor the development of gangrene. Abrasion, burn or surgery complication may be the route of infection for microorganisms. Clinical symptoms appear within few days. Diagnostic process is based on the clinical picture. It is crucial to start treatment as soon as possible. Delay of the wide spectral intravenous antibiotic therapy and surgical removal of the necrotic tissue may result in death of the patient
