Objectives: The target of this work is to consider if depressive symptoms intercurrent with patients suffering from Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) form a depression complex or whether they are physiological depression accompanying adolescence. We wished to observe the perception of these patients,of their functioning, both social and within their families and also looking for common point in the issues mentioned above trying to locate them within the course of the basic illness. Subjects and methods: We studied 19 patients suffering from eating disorders, and aged between 12 and 24 years old. 15 of them suffered from the restrictive form of AN and 4 suffered from BN. The control group consisted of 30 healthy girls in the same age interval. In the study authors used the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Quebec Quality of Life Questionnaire. Results: Comparison of a number of points acquired in the survey using Beck Depression Scale revealed statistic significance at the level p<0.001 which points to a more frequent occurrence of depression symptoms among persons with eating disorders comparing to control group. The survey using the Questionnaire for Social Quality showed no statistically significant differences between study and control groups (p>0.05). The authors observed a statistically significant increased frequency of suicidal thoughts in the study group compared to the controls. Conclusions: To diagnose depression, depressive symptoms presented by the patients must give the image of depression at the clinical level. The result of the Beck\u27s scale needs to be confronted with the clinical picture. Depression in adolescence requires differentiation from depressiveness

    Dialektyka platońska a wychowanie

Education in the light of Platonic philosophy is seen as establishing the natural order of the soul, or forming a character by basing it on what is eternal and perfect. The educational effort constitutes a deep insight info the spiritual and moral destiny of a human. In the face of contemporary intellectual attitudes, thinking about education manifests itself in determining effective methods and powerful means to satisfy arbitrary, incommensurable and changeable goals that do not exceed their historical-empirical conditioning. Intellectual attractiveness and the diversity of theoretical systems with logically constructed reasons is seen as an obvious, necessary and unproblematic answer to the question about education. However, that answer will be contested in this work.Wychowanie w świetle filozofii platońskiej jawi się jako ustanawianie naturalnego porządku duszy czy też formowanie charakteru poprzez opieranie go na tym, co wieczne i doskonałe. Wysiłek wychowawczy konstytuuje namysł nad duchowym i moralnym przeznaczeniem człowieka. W obliczu nowoczesnych postaw intelektualnych myślenie o wychowaniu przejawia się w wyznaczaniu skutecznych metod i efektywnych środków, aby zaspokajać arbitralne, niewspółmierne i zmienne cele niewykraczające ponad swoje historyczno-empiryczne uwarunkowanie. Intelektualna atrakcyjność i różnorodność systemów teoretycznych z logicznie skonstruowanymi racjami uchodzi za oczywistą, konieczną i nieproblematyczną odpowiedź na pytanie o wychowanie. Jednak odpowiedź ta w niniejszym artykule zostanie skontestowana

Introduction: 4D Ultrasound technology merging the Power Doppler option called High-Definition Flow (HDF) with Spatio-Temporal Image Correlation (STIC) is used in gynaecology and obstetrics. It seems to be a promising tool in assessing tissue vascularisation. The aim of the paper was to assess whether HDF STIC technique could be a useful tool for the evaluation of gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (GEP-NEN) advancement. Material and methods: Forty-eight patients [mean age 57.7 ± 10.3 years; male 40.9% (n = 18)] diagnosed with metastatic GEP-NENs were included in the analysis. All subjects were enrolled in the Department of Endocrinology and Neuroendocrine Tumours, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice. We analysed liver metastases. Patients with G3 grading or faintly vascularised lesions were excluded. HDF STIC volumes were acquired during USG examination. 4D indices [volumetric pulsatility index (vPI) and volumetric systolic/diastolic index (vS/D)] were calculated using dedicated software. Results: There were no correlations between vS/D and Ki-67 [p = 0.67; r = –0.19; (–0.28–0.19)], CgA [p = 0.47; r = –0.11; (–0.38–0,19)], 5-HIAA [p = 0.52; r = –0.09 (–0.37–0.2)], serotonin [p = 0.83; r = –0.03 (–0.32–0.26)], and VCAM-1 (p = 0.62; r = 0.09 (–03–0.47)]. The were no correlations between vPI and Ki-67 [p = 0.29; r = –0.16 (–0.45–0.14)], CgA (p = 0.46; r = –0.11 (–0.39–0.19)], 5-HIAA [p = 0.52; r = –0.09 (–0.37–0.2)], serotonin [p = 0.82; r = –0.03 (–0.32–0.26)], and VCAM-1 (p = 0.62; r = –0.09 (–03–0.47)]. There was no significant difference between carcinoid versus non-carcinoid patients if compared by vS/D and vPI (p = 0.62, p = 0.61, respectively). Conclusions: HDF STIC seems not to be an efficient marker to assess advancement of NENs, due to lack of correlation with widely used and approved markers of progression.

Nanostructure phase and interface engineering via controlled Au self-assembly on GaAs(001) surface

We have investigated the temperature-dependent morphology and composition changes occurring during a controlled self-assembling of thin Au film on the Gallium arsenide (001) surface utilizing electron microscopy at nano and atomic levels. It has been found that the deposition of 2 ML of Au at a substrate temperature lower than 798 K leads to the formation of pure Au nanoislands. For the deposition at a substrate temperature of about 798 K the nanostructures of the stoichiometric AuGa phase were/had been grown. Gold deposition at higher substrate temperatures results in the formation of octagonal nanostructures composed of an AuGa2 alloy. We have proved that the temperature-controlled efficiency of Au-induced etching-like of the GaAs substrate follows in a layer-by-layer manner leading to the enrichment of the substrate surface in gallium. The excess Ga together with Au forms liquid droplets which, while cooling the sample to room temperature, crystallize therein developing crystalline nanostructures of atomically-sharp interfaces with the substrate. The minimal stable cluster of 3 atoms and the activation energy for the surface diffusion Ed=0.816+-0.038eV was determined. We show that by changing the temperature of the self-assembling process one can control the phase, interface and the size of the nanostructures formed
