Cultivating Virtue: Developing a Guiding Document for Youth Ministry at Cookeville First United Methodist Church

The purpose of this project was to produce a guiding document of virtues that represented the type of Christ-like character qualities desired in youth at Cookeville First United Methodist Church. The six virtues chosen in the document represent a comprehensive vision for character growth over the course of students’ time in the program. To provide a theological foundation for this project, I examined the idea that virtue has a narrative shape where words find their meaning in a story. For our purposes, this story is generally stated as the story of Jesus at first but is then seen as best articulated in the theology of Paul, specifically, Rom 12 and Phil 2:1-11. These two texts provide an understanding of how Paul wanted his churches to be communities of moral discernment. This purpose was finally achieved by leading a purposive sample of eight members of the congregation through eight sessions where ideas on virtue, character, and ministry were engaged and debated, culminating in the choosing and defining of six virtues. The outcomes of this project were then evaluated from a triangulation of perspectives: an outside expert, insider participants, and the participant researcher. Finally, the intervention was mined for possible contributions to the larger Christian community and ways it could add to the larger discussion on virtue and character growth

Unification of Gravity and Quantum Theory

An overview of the four fundamental forces of physics as described by the Standard Model (SM) and prevalent unifying theories beyond it is provided. Background knowledge of the particles governing the fundamental forces is provided, as it will be useful in understanding the way in which the unification efforts of particle physics has evolved, either from the SM, or apart from it. It is shown that efforts to provide a quantum theory of gravity have allowed supersymmetry (SUSY) and M-Theory to become two of the prevailing theories for unifying gravity with the remaining non-gravitational forces

Risk factors for ischaemic colitis after surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm: a systematic review and observational meta-analysis

BACKGROUND: Ischaemic colitis is an infrequent but serious complication following repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), with high mortality rates. This systematic review set out to identify risk factors for the development of ischaemic colitis after AAA surgery. METHODS: A systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL databases was performed. This search was limited to studies published in the English language after 1990. Abstracts were screened by two authors. Eligible studies were obtained as full text for further examination. Data was extracted by two authors, and any disputes were resolved via consensus. Extracted data was pooled using Mantel-Haenszel random effects models. Bias was assessed using two Cochrane-approved tools. Effect sizes are expressed as relative risk ratios alongside the 95 % confidence interval. Statistical significance was defined at the level of p < 0.05. RESULTS: From 388 studies identified in the initial search, 33 articles were included in the final synthesis and analysis. Risk factors were grouped into patient (female gender, disease severity) and operative factors (peri-procedural hypotension, operative modality). The risk of ischaemic colitis was significantly higher when undergoing emergency repair versus elective (risk ratio (RR) 7.36, 3.08 to 17.58, p < 0.001). Endovascular repair reduced the likelihood of ischaemic colitis (RR 0.22, 0.12 to 0.39, p < 0.001). DISCUSSION: The quality of published evidence on this subject is poor with many retrospective datasets and inconsistent reporting across studies. Successful removal of a giant intrathoracic lipoma: a case report and review of the literature

We report a case of a 44-year old female who presented to her physician complaining of mild dyspnea. A follow-up chest X-ray and chest computed tomography scan revealed a giant bilateral intrathoracic mass, filling the right thoracic cavity and extending across the anterior mediastinum into the left chest cavity. This large mass caused a marked shift in the midline structures, displacing the heart to the left hemi-thorax. The patient underwent surgical removal of the thoracic and breast mass, with histologic examination confirming the diagnosis of a giant intrathoracic lipoma, weighing 4,320 grams and measured 34 × 28 × 11 cm. It is the largest intrathoracic lipoma documented in the modern literature

Sensitivity and specificity of detection methods for erythropoietin doping in cyclists

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) is used as doping a substance. Anti-doping efforts include urine and blood testing and monitoring the athlete biological passport (ABP). As data on the performance of these methods are incomplete, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of two common urine assays and the ABP. In a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial, 48 trained cyclists received a mean dose of 6000 IU rHuEPO (epoetin beta) or placebo by weekly injection for eight weeks. Seven timed urine and blood samples were collected per subject. Urine samples were analyzed by sarcosyl-PAGE and isoelectric focusing methods in the accredited DoCoLab in Ghent. A selection of samples, including any with false presumptive findings, underwent a second sarcosyl-PAGE confirmation analysis. Hematological parameters were used to construct a module similar to the ABP and analyzed by two evaluators from an Athlete Passport Management Unit. Sensitivity of the sarcosyl-PAGE and isoelectric focusing assays for the detection of erythropoietin abuse were 63.8% and 58.6%, respectively, with a false presumptive finding rate of 4.3% and 6%. None of the false presumptive findings tested positive in the confirmation analysis. Sensitivity was highest between 2 and 6 days after dosing, and dropped rapidly outside this window. Sensitivity of the ABP was 91.3%. Specificity of the urine assays was high; however, the detection window of rHuEPO was narrow, leading to questionable sensitivity. The ABP, integrating longitudinal data, is more sensitive, but there are still subjects that evade detection. Combining these methods might improve performance, but will not resolve all observed shortcomings

How a Public Relations Crisis Led to the Development of a Partnership Between Academics and Student Affairs to Enhance Student Success.

In 2013, a public relations crisis led a mid-size university to reconsider the concept of student success on campus. Collaborations between Academic and Student Affairs leaders have resulted in important changes at the university. The university developed increased ability to support student success by investing in staff positions, exploring best practices to increase student success and retention, and implementing several initiatives including a first-year seminar pilot. Relying on data from national surveys, areas for improvement were identified. Underscoring all of these activities was a focus on student development theory, an increased understanding of institutional data, and a commitment to a comprehensive pan-institutional approach. Because the university has a lower than desired graduation rate (55%), several action teams were created to oversee various goals related to communications, year-long orientation experiences, and an academic anchor. Ultimately, this work has now reached the stage where a strategic enrollment management plan is under creation

Innovative Industry: Environmental horticulture professionals’ perceptions on wildlife-friendly plants and a potential certification offering

Plants can improve people’s lives and mental health, but consumers have become increasingly concerned about the impact of plant production practices on the environment and wildlife. Previous research has not explored the interest and ability of plant producers and suppliers to provide wildlife friendly plant options for consumers. The University of Florida is considering the development of a wildlife-friendly plant certification to enhance production protocols for growers and connect consumers to sustainable plant options. This study explored perceptions of this certification through 11 in-depth interviews with environmental horticulture professionals. The study was guided by the following research questions: 1) What experiences do environmental horticulture professionals have with wildlife-friendly plants?, 2) What trends do environmental horticulture professionals see with consumers?, 3) What are the benefits and barriers to adopting this wildlife-friendly plant certification?, and 4) What communication strategies are needed to make this wildlife-friendly plant certification viable? Results indicate environmental horticulture professionals recognize the advantages of wildlife-friendly plants. However, the interviews revealed specific barriers to adoption and communication considerations that would impact certification diffusion. Implications of this research include a need for strategic programming regarding the wildlife-friendly plant certification and cohesive communication strategies among environmental horticulture organizations to educate professionals and consumers about wildlife-friendly plant options

National Agricultural Library: Digital Curation Plan

This report presents the observations, findings, and recommendations of the Agricultural Data Curation team at the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies on digital curation and preservation at the National Agricultural Library (NAL). Through sustained engagement at the library involving the PI, postdoctoral fellows, and Masters fellows, we developed these recommendations for NAL to build an integrated and sustained digital preservation infrastructure which takes advantage of its position as one of the United States’ National Libraries and positions it to lead the USDA and agricultural community in providing next-generation information services.National Agricultural Librar
