    Linear and Non-Linear Causality Tests of Stock Price and Real Exchange Rate Interactions in Turkey

    The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a causality relationship between stock price and real exchange rates in Turkey. Within this context, the study employs monthly data for real exchange rates based on consumer price index and BIST 100 index as representing stock prices that cover the periods from January 2005 to August 2017. On the other side, Granger causality test, Toda-Yamamoto causality analysis and Diks and Panchenko nonlinear causality test used for this purpose. As a result, Linear Granger causality, Toda-Yamamoto and Nonlinear Granger causality tests reveal that there is a casual relationship between real exchange rate and stock price in Turkish economy for the period of 2005:01 - 2017:08 and the direction of the causality is from stock price to exchange rate. This evidence can be interpreted as the changes in stock prices may strongly have influences on the success of foreign exchange rate policies

The new global competition focused on throughput and quality of drug products is certainly the driving force behind this transition which, thus, represents the new challenge of pharmaceutical manufacturing and hence of lyophilization as a downstream operation. In this direction, the present review deals with the most recent technologies, based on spray freeze-drying, that can achieve this objective.     Human mesenchymal stromal cells from different sources diverge in their expression of cell surface proteins and display distinct differentiation patterns

    When germ-free cell cultures became a laboratory routine, hopes were high for using this novel technology for treatment of diseases or replacement of cells in patients suffering from injury, inflammation, or cancer or even refreshing cells in the elderly. Today, more than 50 years after the first successful bone marrow transplantation, clinical application of hematopoietic stem cells is a routine procedure, saving the lives of many every day. However, transplanting other than hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells is still limited to a few applications, and it mainly applies to mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) isolated from bone marrow. But research progressed and different trials explore the clinical potential of human MSCs isolated from bone marrow but also from other tissues including adipose tissue. Recently, MSCs isolated from bone marrow (bmMSCs) were shown to be a blend of distinct cells and MSCs isolated from different tissues show besides some common features also some significant differences. This includes the expression of distinct antigens on subsets of MSCs, which was utilized recently to define and separate functionally different subsets from bulk MSCs. We therefore briefly discuss differences found in subsets of human bmMSCs and in MSCs isolated from some other sources and touch upon how this could be utilized for cell-based therapies

    Optimization and analysis of frequencies of multi-scale graphene/fibre reinforced nanocomposite laminates with non-uniform distributions of reinforcements

    Optimal design and analysis of three-phase graphene/fibre reinforced laminated nanocomposite plates with respect to maximizing the fundamental frequency is the subject of the present study. Optimal design solutions are given for four different sets of design parameters. First design problem determines the optimal graphene contents of individual layers, the second one both graphene and fibre contents, the third optimizes the graphene and fibre contents as well as the layer thicknesses of individual layers, and the fourth problem optimizes the graphene and fibre contents, layer thicknesses and fibre orientations. Purpose of this approach is to assess and compare different levels of optimization by means of a design efficiency index and as such to determine the effectiveness of different design parameters in maximizing the fundamental frequency. Optimization is implemented using a Sequential Quadratic Programming algorithm and the mechanical properties of graphene/fibre nanocomposite are determined via micromechanical relations. Vibration analysis is conducted by the finite element method using four-noded Mindlin plate elements. Results are obtained for simply supported (SSSS), clamped (CCCC) and simply supported-clamped boundary conditions for opposite edges (SCSC). It is observed that non-uniform distributions of graphene and fibre as well as fibre orientations are quite effective in improving the design efficiency

    In corporate governance systems boards perform three functions: the interlocking function (from a resource-dependency and network perspective), a monitoring function (from an agency perspective), and a strategic function (from a strategic choice perspective). In a one-tier board the board of directors incorporates non-executive directors (outsiders, they sometimes represent the interests of key-stakeholders) and executive directors (top management) of the firm. In a two-tier board there is a clear distinction between the directors as members of a supervisory board and the top management team. The board serves in this respect as a supervisory board vis à vis the management board. In the Netherlands a two-tier board is prevalent. Firms who act under the structural regime have boards that are characterized by the co-option principle. This means that board members have to act in the best interest of the firm and ultimately choose each other (and are not chosen by the shareholders or other stakeholders). Co-option has some advantages, but also some clear drawbacks, such as the potentiality of groupthink. The structural regime and other governance regimes, in which the relationship between supervisory board and management board is established, have moderating effects on the hypothesized relationships between the three functions and performance of firms.

    An MPEG-7 scheme for semantic content modelling and filtering of digital video

    Abstract Part 5 of the MPEG-7 standard specifies Multimedia Description Schemes (MDS); that is, the format multimedia content models should conform to in order to ensure interoperability across multiple platforms and applications. However, the standard does not specify how the content or the associated model may be filtered. This paper proposes an MPEG-7 scheme which can be deployed for digital video content modelling and filtering. The proposed scheme, COSMOS-7, produces rich and multi-faceted semantic content models and supports a content-based filtering approach that only analyses content relating directly to the preferred content requirements of the user. We present details of the scheme, front-end systems used for content modelling and filtering and experiences with a number of users

    Human Blood Vessel–Derived Endothelial Progenitors for Endothelialization of Small Diameter Vascular Prosthesis

    BACKGROUND:Coronary bypass graft failure as a result of acute thrombosis and intimal hyperplasia has been the major challenge in surgical procedures involving small-diameter vascular prosthesis. Coating synthetic grafts with patients' own endothelial cells has been suggested to improve the patency rate and overall success of bypass surgeries. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We isolated endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) from leftover pieces of human saphenous vein/mammary artery. We demonstrate that EPCs can be expanded to generate millions of cells under low-density culture conditions. Exposure to high-density conditions induces differentiation to endothelial cell phenotype. EPC-derived endothelial cells show expression of CD144high, CD31, and vWF. We then assessed the ability of differentiated endothelial cells to adhere and grow on small diameter expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) tubings. Since ePTFE tubings are highly hydrophobic, we optimized protocols to introduce hydrophilic groups on luminal surface of ePTFE tubings. We demonstrate here a stepwise protocol that involves introduction of hydrophilic moieties and coating with defined ECM components that support adhesion of endothelial cells, but not of blood platelets. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE:Our data confirms that endothelial progenitors obtained from adult human blood vessels can be expanded in vitro under xenoprotein-free conditions, for potential use in endothelialization of small diameter ePTFE grafts. These endothelialized grafts may represent a promising treatment strategy for improving the clinical outcome of small-caliber vascular grafts in cardiac bypass surgeries
