    Centrifuge Tests and Simple Analyses for Seismic Soil-Structure Interaction

    Dynamic centrifuge tests were performed on a superstructure-footing model that was placed on a dry sand surface and subjected to two different input motions having peak accelerations of 60 cm/s2 and 249 cm/s2. Two simple analyses, equivalent linear analysis (SHAKE) and dynamic response of a structure using a sway-rocking model (SR-model) were performed. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) SHAKE and SR-model analyses can simulate the recorded response of the soil and superstructure. However, the shear wave velocity of the ground that can simulate the superstructure response by an SR-model for amax=249 cm/s2 is much smaller than that of the free field estimated using SHAKE. (2) The observed relation of the base friction force with relative displacement between the footing base and the ground surface shows strong nonlinearity when amax=249 cm/s2, which probably results from the large shear deformation of the thin layer beneath the footing

    Current Status of Treatment of Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy

    Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is the first member identified among polyglutamine diseases characterized by slowly progressive muscle weakness and atrophy of the bulbar, facial, and limb muscles pathologically associated with motor neuron loss in the spinal cord and brainstem. Androgen receptor (AR), a disease-causing protein of SBMA, is a well-characterized ligand-activated transcription factor, and androgen binding induces nuclear translocation, conformational change and recruitment of coregulators for transactivation of AR target genes. Some therapeutic strategies for SBMA are based on these native functions of AR. Since ligand-induced nuclear translocation of mutant AR has been shown to be a critical step in motor neuron degeneration in SBMA, androgen deprivation therapies using leuprorelin and dutasteride have been developed and translated into clinical trials. Although the results of these trials are inconclusive, renewed clinical trials with more sophisticated design might prove the effectiveness of hormonal intervention in the near future. Furthermore, based on the normal function of AR, therapies targeted for conformational changes of AR including amino-terminal (N) and carboxy-terminal (C) (N/C) interaction and transcriptional coregulators might be promising. Other treatments targeted for mitochondrial function, ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), and autophagy could be applicable for all types of polyglutamine diseases

    Pre-regulation of the planar chirality of pillar[5]arenes for preparing discrete chiral nanotubes

    Regulating the chirality of macrocyclic host molecules and supramolecular assemblies is crucial because chirality often plays a role in governing the properties of these systems. Herein, we describe pillar[5]arene-based chiral nanotube formation via pre-regulation of the building blocks' chirality, which is different from frequently used post-regulation strategies. The planar chirality of rim-differentiated pillar[5]arenes is initially regulated by chiral awakening and further induction/inversion through stepwise achiral external stimuli. The pre-regulated chiral information is well stored in discrete nanotubes by interacting with a per-alkylamino-substituted pillar[5]arene. Such pre-regulation is more efficient than post-regulating the chirality of nanotubes

    Magnetocaloric and Magnetic Properties of Meta‐Magnetic Heusler Alloy Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5

    Ni41Co9Mn31.5Ga18.5 is a magnetic Heusler alloy, which indicates metamagnetic transition at the reverse martensite transition. In this paper, caloric measurements were performed and discussed about magnetocaloric effect. We also performed magnetization measurements around Curie temperature TC in the martensite phase and analyzed by means of the spin fluctuation theory of itinerant electron magnetism. From the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements in zero fields, the value of the latent heat λ was obtained as 2.63 kJ/kg, and in magnetic fields the value was not changed. The entropy change ΔS was − 7.0 J/(kgK) in zero fields and gradually increases with increasing magnetic fields. The relative cooling power (RCP) was 104 J/kg at 2.0 T, which was comparable with In doped Ni41Co9Mn32Ga16In2 alloy

    Real-time chirality transfer monitoring from statistically random to discrete homochiral nanotubes

    Real time monitoring of chirality transfer processes is necessary to better understand their kinetic properties. Herein, we monitor an ideal chirality transfer process from a statistically random distribution to a diastereomerically pure assembly in real time. The chirality transfer is based on discrete trimeric tubular assemblies of planar chiral pillar[5]arenes, achieving the construction of diastereomerically pure trimers of pillar[5]arenes through synergistic effect of ion pairing between a racemic rim-differentiated pillar[5]arene pentaacid bearing five benzoic acids on one rim and five alkyl chains on the other, and an optically resolved pillar[5]arene decaamine bearing ten amines. When the decaamine is mixed with the pentaacid, the decaamine is sandwiched by two pentaacids through ten ion pairs, initially producing a statistically random mixture of a homochiral trimer and two heterochiral trimers. The heterochiral trimers gradually dissociate and reassemble into the homochiral trimers after unit flipping of the pentaacid, leading to chirality transfer from the decaamine and producing diastereomerically pure trimers

    Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of the Stomach: A Case Study

    Gastric neuroendocrine carcinomas are rare and have a poor prognosis, and the diagnostic criteria for this disease have recently changed. We herein report a case of sporadic gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma. A 75-year-old man was referred to our hospital with epigastric pain. Endoscopic examination revealed a localized ulcerative lesion (diameter, 4 cm) at the upper stomach. The diagnosis on biopsy was neuroendocrine carcinoma. Total gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy, splenectomy, and cholecystectomy was performed. Pathologically, the tumor infiltrated the subserosal layer, and 6/49 lymph nodes were involved. The tumor was uniform in shape and arranged in a rosette-like structure to form solid nests, with medium-sized, round-to-cuboid-shaped tumor cells and intense mitosis 46/10 HPF. It was positive for synaptophysin and chromogranin A, and the Ki-67 labeling index was 70–80%. The diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma was made according to the WHO 2010 criteria. The patient was followed up for three years without recurrence
