Estudos sôbre a nutrição mineral do feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L., var. roxinho)
6.1. The uptake of macronutrients by bean plants was studied under field conditions. It was shownthat higher production of dry matter was obtained when the crop was 56 days old. Total amounts absorved were, in kg/ha: N-101, P-9, K-93, Ca-54, Mg-18 and S-25. 6.2. When grgown in nutrient solution symptoms of deficiency were observed tor all nutrients under study. Anatomical lesions within the leaf tissue were also observed, the chloroplasts being particularly affected. The following leaf levels of elements in the dry leaves characterize conditions of deficiency: N-1.54%, P-0.13%, K-0,93%, Ca-0.42%, Mg-0.48%, S-0.70%.No presente trabalho foi estudada a marcha de absorção de macronutrientes pelo feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L., var. roxinho) em condições de campo. Verificou-se que a produção mais alta de matéria sêca ocorreu quando as plantas tinham 56 dias de idade, o que corresponde aproximadamente a dois terços do perÃodo necessário para completar o ciclo. As quantidades totais de macronutrientes absorvida em kg/ha foram: N-101, P-9, K-93, Ca-54, Mg-18 e S-25. Em outro experimento foram obtidos, cultivando-se as plantas em solução nutritiva, sintomas tÃpicos de carência dos macronutrientes estudados. Cortes anatômicos das folhas mostraram que a omissão dos elementos do substrato causava lesões nos tecidos, sendo os cloroplastos as organelas particularmente afetadas. Os seguintes nÃveis foliares de elementos caracterizam deficiência dos mesmos nas condições experimentais: N-1,54%, P-0,13%, K-0,93%, Ca-0,42%, Mg-0,48%, S-0,70%

1. Cotton plants were grown in water culture in the absence of each of six micronutrients (boron, copper iron, manganese, molybeenum and zinc) in turn. 2. The technique employed is described. 3. Sintomas externos (morfológicos) e internos (anatômicos), observados em folhas de goiabeira (Psidium guajava L.), de plantas cultivadas em solução nutritiva com carência dos macronutrientes
The present work was carried out in order to study: (1) The symptoms of deficiency of macronutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S) in guava (Psidium guajava L.). (2) The modifications induced by those treatments in the histological make up of the leaves. Young guava plants were grown in nutrient solution two treatments being used, namely: complete solution (HOAGLAND and ARNON, 1950), deficient solution, in which a given element was ommitted. The main conclusions can be summaryzed as follows. a) Symptoms Clear cut symptoms of malnutrition were observed in the treatments: -N, -P, -Ca, -K, -Mg, and -S. The signal - stared respectively for deficient level. b) Histological effects Usually the characteristics of the chloroplasts were affected: loss of the green and coalescence into irregular bodies

Highly efficient separation of actinides from lanthanides by a phenanthroline-derived bis-triazine ligand
The synthesis, lanthanide complexation, and solvent ex- traction of actinide(III) and lanthanide(III) radiotracers from nitric acid solutions by a phenanthroline-derived quadridentate bis-triazine ligand are described. The ligand separates Am(III) and Cm(III) from the lanthanides with remarkably high efficiency, high selectivity, and fast extraction kinetics compared to its 2,2'-bipyridine counterpart. Structures of the 1:2 bis-complexes of the ligand with Eu(III) and Yb(III) were elucidated by X-ray crystallography and force field calculations, respec-tively. The Eu(III) bis-complex is the first 1:2 bis-complex of a quadridentate bis-triazine ligand to be characterized by crystallography. The faster rates of extraction were verified by kinetics measurements using the rotating membrane cell technique in several diluents. The improved kinetics of metal ion extraction are related to the higher surface activity of the ligand at the phase interface. The improvement in the ligand's properties on replacing the bipyridine unit with a phenanthroline unit far exceeds what was anticipated based on ligand design alone
Efeitos da nutrição mineral sobre o crescimento, aspecto, composição elementar e fixação de nitrogênio em Azolla
The mineral nutrition of Azolla feliculoides Lam was studied in solutions deficient in phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron and molybdenum, and in excess of Mn and Al. Dry weight, N2 fixation and mineral composition of Azolla were determined after 3 weeks. Phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium deficiencies and excess of manganese and aluminium decressed growth severely and also depressed the activity of nitrogenase. Phosphorus deficiency improved the uptake of iron and zinc. Potassium deficiency increased the levels of phosphorus in dry matter. Magnesium deficiency caused lower uptake of K and better uptake of Ca, Fe and Mn. Sulfur deficiency reduced aluminium uptake and promoted the best growth. Positive correlations were found between: N content and dry matter, nitrogenase activity and N content.Azolla filiculoides Lam foi cultivado em solução nutritiva arejada, sempre desprovida de N combinado, sendo submetida aos seguintes tratamentos: omissão de P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe e Mo, excesso de Mn e Al. As plantas foram colhidas depois de 3 semanas da inoculação. Verificou-se que as deficiências de P, K, Ca e Mg provocaram diminuição na produção de matéria seca e na atividade de nitrogenase. A análise mineral mostrou que: a falta de um elemento provoca redução no seu teor; grande acumulo de Mo; diminuição no teor de Al (do inóculo ou contaminação) no tratamento menos S que garantiu o maior crescimento; efeitos inibitórios ou sinergÃsticos semelhantes aos descritos no caso de plantas superiores. A toxidez de Al e Mn causou, principalmente a primeira, redução no crescimento e na atividade da nitrogenase. Houve correlações positivas entre: N total e crescimento, atividade de nitrogenase e N total
