Study of Scattering and Polarization of Light in Biological Tissue
Tkáňová optika nabývá rychle na významu a přesná znalost optických vlastností biologických tkání je podstatná pro výzkum v biomedicíně i pro kontrolu kvality potravin. Jestliže je vzorek tkáně osvětlen, dochází k mnohonásobnému odrazu světla. V případě postmortem neživých tkání (maso) je rozměr buněk větší než vlnová délka použitého světla. Dochází k Mieovu rozptylu prošlého nebo zpět odraženého světla, v důsledku čehož se objevují různé polarizační stavy světla. Polarizační stavy světla rozptýleného na difúzním prostředí jsou experimentálně zkoumány a modelovány. V práci jsme provedli dva modifikované experimenty: rozptyl polarizovaného světla, které dvakrát prochází vzorkem (vpřed a vzad) a jen světla, které jen prochází vzorkem. Měření rozptýleného světla ukazuje, že dochází k depolarizaci a ke stáčení polarizační roviny, což obojí závisí na orientaci svalových vláken a stárnutí tkání postmortem. Mimo experimentů byl také proveden teoretický popis difúzní biologické tkáně a byla vypočtena radiační přenosová rovnice pomocí modifikované Monte Carlo metody, která zahrnuje polarizační stav světla (PLMC). Je ukázáno, že stupeň polarizace podstatně závisí na optických vlastnostech rozptylového prostředí. Výsledky ukazují, že stav polarizace světla na výstupu závisí na stavu polarizace světla před vzorkem a na optických vlastnostech a tloušťce vrstvy prostředí v průběhu jejího stárnutí. Je také provedena korelace změn polarizace na čerstvosti masa, i popis dynamického chování polarizace při stárnutí masa.Tissue optics becomes a rapidly expanding field of great interest and a precise knowledge of optical properties of biological tissues is essential for biomedical investigation and food quality control. If the sample of tissue is illuminated, the multiple scattering occurs. In the case of the postmortem tissue (meat) the cell dimensions are larger than the wavelength. Mie scattering of transmitted or reflected light arises and produces various polarization states. Polarization properties of light scattered from a scattering medium have been studied with experiments and modeling. Two modified experiments were performed: scattering of polarized light passing twice the sample (forward and backward) and only transmitted light. The measurements of scattered light display depolarization and rotation of polarized light, which depend both on orientation of the muscle fibers and ageing process of meat. Theoretical description of turbid biological tissue and computing of radiative transfer equation by modified Polarized Light Monte Carlo (PLMC) method has also been executed. It is shown that the degree of polarization is sensitive to the optical properties of the turbid medium. The results demonstrate that polarized light scattered from a scattering medium is sensitive to the state of input polarization and the optical properties and thickness of the tissue during the ageing. The correlations of polarization changes and freshness of meat, as well as dynamic behavior of the polarization in ageing meat are shown.
Optimal line length for reading schoolbook on screen
Although experimental studies have shown a strong impact of text layout on the legibility of e- text, many digital texts appearing in eBook or the internet use different designs, so that there is no straightforward answer in the literature over which one to follow when designing e- material. Therefore, in this paper we shall focus on the text layout, particularly the influence of line lengthen reading performance of e-school book.48 native Arabic students (24 male and 24 female) volunteered for this experiment. The participants’ age ranged from 9 to 13. Performance of students was assessed through two dependent variables: (1) time to complete each tasks; and (2) accuracy of the answers. Accuracy data was based on the number of correct answers the students provided and the total score was 12 points. Several findings were reported by this experiment such as; the time needed to complete all the question models becomes significantly low when students are older, errors for all the question models are expected to be significantly lower for older students. Reading text on a single column with double columns shows that the reading process is affected by the students’ age, as older students were faster when reading through double columns, while students aged 9 prefer the single column in both reading processes. The study has recommended double line for fast reading for students their reading performance is satisfactory. While, long line has suggested for students with difficulty in reading
Filter bank based fractional delay filter implementation for widely accurate broadband steering vectors
Applications such as broadband angle of arrival estimation require the implementation of accurate broadband steering vectors, which generally rely on fractional delay filter designs. These designs commonly exhibit a rapidly decreasing performance as the Nyquist rate is approached. To overcome this, we propose a filter bank based approach, where standard fractional delay filters operate on a series of frequency-shifted oversampled subband signals, such that they appear in the filter's lowpass region. Simulations demonstrate the appeal of this approach
A study of project planning on Libyan construction projects
Construction projects are regularly faced by scheduling problems causing the projects to finish beyond their predetermined due date; this is a global phenomenon. The main purpose of this study is to consider the problems associated with project planning generally, with specific reference to construction projects in Libya. This study is unique in two respects. First, despite the recent high volume of infrastructure work in the country, there have been few investigations into construction delays in Libya. Secondly, earlier studies have considered the causes or the effects of project delays, whereas the present aim is to evaluate the potential of applying a planning and scheduling technique that is entirely novel in the Libyan context. A Preliminary Study of Applying Lean Six Sigma Methods to Machine Tool Measurement
Many manufacturers aim to increase their levels of high-quality production in order to improve their market competitiveness. Continuous improvement of maintenance strategies is a key factor to be capable of delivering high quality products and services on-time with minimal operating costs. However, the cost of maintaining quality is often perceived as a non-added-value task. Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the measurement procedures necessary to guarantee accuracy of production is a more complex task than many other maintenance functions and so deserves particular analysis.
This paper investigates the feasibility of producing a concise yet effective framework that will provide a preliminary approach for integrating Lean and Six Sigma philosophies to the specific goal of reducing unnecessary downtime on manufacturing machines while maintaining its ability to machine to the required tolerance.
The purpose of this study is to show how a Six Sigma infrastructure is used to investigate the root causes of complication occurring during the machine tool measurement. This work recognises issues of the uncertainty of data, and the measurement procedures in parallel with the main tools of Six Sigma’s Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control (DMAIC).
The significance of this work is that machine tool accuracy is critical for high value manufacturing. Over-measuring the machine to ensure accuracy potentially reduces production volume. However, not measuring them or ignoring accuracy aspects possibly lead to production waste. This piece of work aims to present a lean guidance to lessen measurement uncertainties and optimise the machine tool benchmarking procedures, while adopting the DMAIC strategy to reduce unnecessary downtime
Distributed closed-loop EO-STBC for a time-varying relay channel based on kalman tracking
This paper considers distributed closed-loop extended orthogonal space-time block coding (EO-STBC) for amplify-forward relaying over time-varying channels. In between periodically injected pilot symbols for training, the smooth variation of the fading channel coefficients is exploited by Kalman tracking. We show in this paper that the joint variation of both relay channels still motivates the use of a higher-order auto-regressive model for the a priori prediction step within a decision-feedback system, compared to a first-order standard Kalman model. Simulations results compare these two case and highlight the benefits of the proposed higher-order Kalman filter, which offer joint decoding and tracking
Comparative study for broadband direction of arrival estimation techniques
This paper reviews and compares three different linear algebraic signal subspace techniques for broadband direction of arrival estimation --- (i) the coherent signal subspace approach, (ii) eigenanalysis of the parameterised spatial correlation matrix, and (iii) a polynomial version of the multiple signal classification algorithm.
