    On the Usage of the Faraday Effect as an Authentication Technique for Vegetable Oils

    In this study we report on the measurements of the Verdet constant for olive and other vegetable oils. Study of samples stored for different periods at different storage conditions showed that each olive oil sample has a Verdet constant value depending on: production year, history of the sample (i.e. storage conditions) and geographical region. Photo and auto oxidations are found to have reverse effects on the value of the measured Verdet constant, on the one hand, photo-oxi- dation tends to decrease the Verdet constant, but on the other hand auto-oxidation tends to increase it. It is known that oils stored in room light had significantly lower tocopherol, carotenoid, and chlorophyll contents than did the same oils kept in the dark. For other vegetable oil samples, each vegetable oil was found to have a distinct Verdet constant value. Thus it is possible to differentiate vegetable oils making use of their respective Verdet constants. Preliminary results indicated the possibility to detect olive oil adulteration using the Faraday Effect, i.e. the effect could be suggested as a food authentication technique if calibration curves and standard Verdet constants values could be prepared for com-parison with those of samples under investigation

    Broadband Infrared Tissue Absorption using Miniature Homemade Infrared Light Source: Preliminary study for Tumor Heating

    Infrared tissue absorption spectroscopy is an important tool for both medical diagnosis and treatment purposes. In this work we report broadband infrared tissue absorption using homemade miniature IR source. The usefulness of the miniature IR source is that it can be manufactured in different shapes and sizes that makes it fit for in-vivo studies in small human body cavities. Tissue samples were subjected to a broad infrared band radiation in the range 1-15 μm. The depth of absorption in tissue was monitored to determine efficacy for future use for both diagnosis and treatment purposes. Finding new ways that are characterized as a noninvasive technique, with least or no side effects, low cost and relatively with quick results in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Increasing the temperature of a cancer cell (rat tissue and cancerous cell line) up to ~ 42oC will give clear indication of new technique to kill cancer cells. Knowing the temperature distribution over the samples radiated by IR radiation allows the possibility to diagnose different cancer cell samples from their heat absorption. This depends on the content absorbing chromospheres of the tissue at the intended wavelengths. Specifying these properties of a tissue is the first step toward choosing proper IR source for the planned therapeutic method

    Detection of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the occupied Palestinian territory: a cross-sectional study

    Background Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide threat to public health. WHO has created several resolutions and strategies on this subject at the World Health Assembly. In May, 2015, WHO published a global action plan to mitigate antimicrobial resistance, including tracking and global surveillance focusing on improving awareness and understanding of this issue. The aim of this study was to screen for carbapenem-resistant bacteria in the occupied Palestinian Territory, to investigate the mechanisms behind the resistance, and to assess the scope of this difficulty in the area.     A REVIEW OF CURRENT NURSING PRACTICE AND EVIDENCE-BASED GUIDELINES IN ENTERAL NUTRITION IN THE CRITICALLY ILL PATIENT

    Objectives: to provide an overview of evidence-based guidelines regarding some clinical practices related to enteral nutrition along with nursing adherence to these guidelines in the critically ill. Background: evidence-based guidelines for enteral nutrition curtailing the incidence of complications through managing gastric residual volumes, minimizing feeding interruption/under-feeding, confirming tube placement and preventing feeding system contamination. Design: an integrative literature review was employed to include various quantitative methodologies; however, RCTs predominated. Methods: electronic searching of CINAHL, Medline and Cochrane Library databases between 1995- 2011. Of 599 retrieved studies, 87 were included in the review. Results: The studies showed an inadequacy in nursing adherence to enteral nutrition evidence-based. Gastric residual volume should be strictly controlled using prokinetic agents, appropriate head of bed elevation and proper endo-tracheal tube cuff pressure. Feeding interruption should be avoided whenever is possible and an intentional increase to feeding rates/volumes are recommended to avoid under-feeding. X-ray and pH methods of confirming tube placement are more reliable and superior to capnometry and auscultatory methods. Feeding system hanging time should not exceed four consecutive days to prevent infection by endogenous source in addition to delivering formulae at closer body core temperature. Conclusion: evidence-based protocols should be employed effectively and consistently to eradicate discrepancies in nursing practice. Relevance to clinical practice: this paper highlights nursing role in prohibiting the majority of enteral nutrition complications through adhering to evidence-based guidelines

    Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and Antibiotics Prescription Trends at a Central West Bank Hospital

    Objectives: We aimed to reliably describe the pattern of outpatient prescription of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics (ATBs) at a central hospital in the West Bank, Palestine.Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study investigating a cohort of 2,208 prescriptions ordered by outpatient clinics and the emergency room over one year in Beit Jala Hospital in Bethlehem, West Bank. The orders were analysed for the rate and types of NSAIDs and ATBs utilised, and the appropriateness of these drugs to the diagnosis. Results: Of the total prescriptions, 410 contained NSAIDs (18.6%), including diclofenac (40.2%), low dose aspirin (23.9%), ibuprofen (17.8%) and indomethacin (15.1%). A minority of these prescriptions contained a combination of these agents (2.5%). Only one prescription contained cyclooxyeganse-2 inhibitors (0.2%). The appropriateness of NSAID use to the diagnosis was as follows: appropriate (58.3%), inappropriate (14.4%) and difficult to tell (27.3%). The rate of ATB use was 30.3% (669 prescriptions). The ATBs prescribed were amoxicillin (23.3%), augmentin (14.3%), quinolones (12.7%), first and second generation cephalosporins (9.4% and 12.7%, respectively) and macrolides (7.2%). ATB combinations were identified in 9.4%, with the most common being second-generation cephalopsorins and metronidazole (4.3%). Regarding the appropriateness of prescribing ATBs according to the diagnosis, it was appropriate in 44.8%, inappropriate in 20.6% and difficult to tell in 34.6% of the prescriptions. Conclusion: These findings revealed a relatively large number and inappropriate utilisation of ATBs and NSAIDs. An interventional programme needs to be adopted to reinforce physicians’ knowledge of the rational prescription of these agents

    Larvicidal Activity of Selected Xerophytic Plants Against Culex pipiens and Aedes caspius (Diptera: Culicidae)

    Abstract.-Methanol extracts of different plants namely, Trichodesma africanum (Boraginaceae), Cleome rupicola (Capparceae) and Ochradenus baccatus (Resedaceae), were tested for larvicidal activity against 4 th instar larvae of Aedes caspius and Culex pipiens mosquitoes. All plant extracts tested against Ae. caspius showed 100% mortality at 10µg/ml except the stem of O. baccatus which showed 90% mortality. However, most of the plant extracts tested against Cx. pipiens showed more than 50% mortality at 10µg/ml. Ae. caspius reported lower LD 50 than Cx. pipiens. The LD 50 of the extracts tested ranged between 5.3-0.99. The lowest LD 50 calculated against Ae. caspius was 1.2±0.06 and 0.99±0.16 µg/ml for the stem of T. africanum and C. rupicola, respectively. In conclusion, we have documented promising larvicidal potential of xerophytic plants, which could be considered as a potentially alternative source for developing novel larvicides to be used in controlling vectors of mosquito-borne diseases

    Sleep habits and sleep problems among Palestinian students

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Aim</p> <p>The aim of this study was to describe sleep habits and sleep problems in a population of undergraduates in Palestine. Association between self-reported sleep quality and self-reported academic achievement was also investigated.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sleep habits and problems were investigated using a convenience sample of students from An-Najah National University, Palestine. The study was carried out during spring semester, 2009. A self-administered questionnaire developed based on The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV criteria and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>400 students with a mean age of 20.2 ± 1.3 were studied. Reported mean duration of night sleep in the study sample was 6.4 ± 1.1 hours. The majority (58.3%) of students went to bed before midnight and 18% of the total sample woke up before 6 am. Sleep latency of more than one hour was present in 19.3% of the students. Two thirds (64.8%) of the students reported having at least one nocturnal awakening per night. Nightmares were the most common parasomnia reported by students. Daytime naps were common and reported in 74.5% of the study sample. Sleep quality was reported as "poor" in only 9.8% and was significantly associated with sleep latency, frequency of nocturnal awakenings, time of going to bed, nightmares but not with academic achievement.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Sleep habits among Palestinian undergraduates were comparable to those reported in European studies. Sleep problems were common and there was no significant association between sleep quality and academic achievement.</p
