AbstractSeveral validation activities were dedicated to the High Flux Test Module (HFTM) of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany. The HFTM contains 24 capsules packed densely with Eurofer specimens to facilitate their irradiation in the high flux zone directly behind the IFMIF neutron source. The small gaps among the Eurofer specimens are filled by the sodium potassium eutectic alloy NaK-78 to improve the thermal conduction among the specimens and achieve uniform and predictable temperature distribution. As a result of first trials, the filling process of NaK-78 into the specimens’ capsule had been identified as an issue worth further investigations. Therefore, the wettability of the steels Eurofer and SS 316 by NaK-78 is experimentally investigated to evaluate the applicability of this concept and identify the favorable conditions. In the experiment, the capillary rise of NaK-78 in a two-parallel-plates channel (gap) is investigated versus the following: (i) temperature of both NaK-78 and the parallel plates from 50°C to 350°C, (ii) machining techniques used for the parallel plates, (iii) thickness of the gap between the plates, and (iv) material of the parallel plates including Eurofer and SS 316. The present experimental results will help in defining the working conditions required to achieve an optimal filling of the IFMIF HFTM capsules with NaK-78 and a complete wetting of the capsules’ specimens

Experimental investigation of EU-DEMO Breeding Blanket First Wall mock-ups in support of the manufacturing and material development programmes

This paper presents the testing campaign of the two First Wall mock-ups in the HELOKA facility, one mock-up having a 3 mm thick Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steel layer on its surface and the other featuring a tungsten functionally graded cover. Special consideration is given to the diagnostics used for these tests, in particular, the measurement of the surface temperature of the tungsten functionally graded layer with an infrared camera. Additionally, the paper looks into the uncertainty associated with the calorimetric evaluation of the applied heating power for these experiments

Experimental Thermal–Hydraulic Testing of a Mock-Up of the Fuel-Breeder Pin Concept for the EU-DEMO HCPB Breeding Blanket

The fusion program in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) leads the R&D of the DEMO helium-cooled pebble bed (HCPB) breeding blanket within the work package breeding blanket (WPBB) of the Eurofusion Consortium in the European Union (EU). A new design of the HCPB breeder zone, with a layout inspired by a nuclear reactor fuel rod arrangement, was developed recently and called the fuel-breeder pin concept. In addition, a mock-up (MU) of this fuel-breeder pin was designed and manufactured at KIT in order to test and validate its thermal–hydraulic performance. This paper reports on the results of the first experimental campaign dedicated to the fuel-breeder pin MU testing that was performed in the Helium Loop Karlsruhe (HELOKA) facility. The paper presents: (i) the integration of the fuel-breeder pin MU into the HELOKA loop including considerations of the experimental set-up, (ii) an overview of the plan for the experimental campaigns, and (iii) a discussion of the experimental results with a focus on aspects relevant for the validation of the thermal–hydraulic design of the HCPB breeder zone

Engineering Design of the European DEMO HCPB Breeding Blanket Breeder Zone Mockup

The Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) breeding blanket is one of the two driver-blanket candidates for the European fusion demonstration power plant (EU DEMO) within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium. As the EU DEMO program is going, testing of mockups becomes increasingly important. In this article, the engineering design of a first-ever breeder zone mockup of the EU DEMO HCPB breeding blanket is reported. The mockup will be tested in the high-pressure, high temperature, helium facility (HELOKA) at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. This mockup will act as a test rig to validate heat transfer correlations, CFD software, and thermal hydraulics systems codes. As pressure equipment, the mockup shall conform to the latest European Union Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU. The design description, rationale and test matrix, and corresponding analyses are discussed and presented
