How Do Manipulatives Help Students Communicate Their Understanding of Double-Digit Subtraction?

Multi-digit subtraction is difficult for students to learn. The purpose of this study is to explore how second-grade students communicate their understanding of double-digit subtraction through the use of manipulatives/tools. This qualitative study reports on six case studies of second-grade students where clinical interviews were the main source of data. Findings suggest that manipulatives/tools helped reveal cognitive constructs and difficulties that the handwritten algorithms were not conveying. For example, students who exhibited an understanding of the subtraction process had not yet developed an understanding of ten and 10 ones interchangeability. These results highlight the potential role of manipulatives/tools as communication tools that help reveal students’ actual cognitive development. Implications to research and practice in relation to students’ learning trajectories are discussed

PSYCHIC: A Neuro-Symbolic Framework for Knowledge Graph Question-Answering Grounding

The Scholarly Question Answering over Linked Data (Scholarly QALD) at The International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) 2023 challenge presents two sub-tasks to tackle question answering (QA) over knowledge graphs (KGs). We answer the KGQA over DBLP (DBLP-QUAD) task by proposing a neuro-symbolic (NS) framework based on PSYCHIC, an extractive QA model capable of identifying the query and entities related to a KG question. Our system achieved a F1 score of 00.18% on question answering and came in third place for entity linking (EL) with a score of 71.00%.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for the Scholarly-QALD challenge at the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) 202

    The Path to Autonomous Learners

In this paper, we present a new theoretical approach for enabling domain knowledge acquisition by intelligent systems. We introduce a hybrid model that starts with minimal input knowledge in the form of an upper ontology of concepts, stores and reasons over this knowledge through a knowledge graph database and learns new information through a Logic Neural Network. We study the behavior of this architecture when handling new data and show that the final system is capable of enriching its current knowledge as well as extending it to new domains

Traumatic rupture of a solitary splenic hydatid cyst: A case report

SummaryThe rupture of an Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst in the spleen due to trauma is a rare event. In this case report we describe the case of a 39-year-old Lebanese male victim of a motor vehicle accident with a ruptured solitary splenic hydatid cyst discovered by CT scan and excised during exploratory laparotomy.Echinococcosis or hydatid disease is a parasitic infestation by the Echinococcus genus of tapeworm. The eggs of E. granulosus, a species of Echinococcus, are fecal-orally transmitted to human hosts, most often from dog feces, and manifest as cystic lesions termed hydatid. E. granulosus most commonly affects the liver (75%), lungs (15%), and rarely the spleen (2–5%) [1,2]. E. granulosus is particularly endemic to cattle rearing areas of the Middle East. Infected patients most commonly present with vague abdominal pain, as a result of mass effect or spontaneous rupture of the cyst. Nevertheless, patient presentation may be due to traumatic rupture of a hydatid cyst; however, this is very rare. Herein we report a case of traumatic rupture of a solitary splenic hydatid cyst in a 39-year-old male following a motor vehicle crash, managed following the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) protocol
