Reciprocal Transplant And Machine Learning Study Of Oak Mistletoe On Three Host Oak Species In Santa Margarita, California
At Santa Margarita Ranch, California, oak mistletoe (Phoradendron villosum) parasitizes valley oak and blue oak but cannot be found growing on coast live oak despite its abundance and ability to parasitize coast live oak in other areas. It seems as though this species of mistletoe is specializing on certain host oak trees, but the mechanisms of this specialization are unknown. In order to investigate this pattern, we utilized a type of machine learning in GIS called supervised classification as well as a reciprocal transplant study in the field. The three species of oak trees were classified with 87% accuracy using drone imagery and 95% accuracy using open source NAIP imagery. This classification technique could be applied to the whole state of California as long as ground truth points for each species were collected. This could be extremely useful for large scale forest management projects and ecological questions. Unfortunately, the classifier was unsuccessful at distinguishing mistletoe from host and so the number of mistletoe on each host could not be quantified using this technique. The reciprocal transplant study involved collecting mistletoe fruit from individuals growing on each of the three hosts and experimentally applying them back onto all three hosts. This allowed us to test whether there are host races of mistletoe that specialize at growing on certain hosts. We found that seeds from each host origin germinated equally well regardless of where they were dispersed, and seeds survived best on coast live oak, regardless of where they originated from. Based on these results, there must be some mechanism, other than host races, that explains the lack of mistletoe on coast live oaks at Santa Margarita Ranch. Future projects should investigate whether evidence for host races can be found at a later stage of seedling development and the roll of bird dispersers in creating the pattern
The archaeological studies about Pantelleria find their origins in the XIX century, but it is only in the last ten years that a great project of researches, concerning the study on the chronological aspects of the human occupation of Pantelleria that involves institutions and Italian and foreign researchers, took place.
Since 1998 to the present days have been realized survey exploration on the 25% of the island and six sites, that cover a chronological area going from the Eneolitic age to the late-antique period have been stratigraphically studied.
Many data in the end, come from underwater archaeological researches; thousands of immersions (dives) made to document and asses the wrecks in the depth of the island took to the finding of 11 archaeological sites placed between 5 and 115 m deep.
Many excavations made underwater allowed to chronologically frame the frequenting of the two main landing places of the island, that is Pantelleria and Scauri.
The archaeological excavations concerned 3 wrecks too : the Punic Roman ones Cala Gadir 1 and Cala Tramontana 1 and the late-antique one of the Port of Scauri.
The analyse and comparison of the data acquired during more than ten years of researches consented to draw the way of settling down that characterizes every historical period owing to the economical, social and political changes involving the Sicily Canal.
As there are not any written sources only the archaeological enquiries are now helping writing the history of an island whose portrait has come to un in a discontinuous and confused way from ancient authors.

Historical evolution of the concept of anorexia nervosa and relationships with orthorexia nervosa, autism, and obsessive-compulsive spectrum
Eating disorders have been defined as "characterized by persistence disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly impairs health or psychosocial functioning". The psychopathology of eating disorders changed across time under the influence of environmental factors, determining the emergence of new phenotypes. Some of these conditions are still under investigation and are not clearly identified as independent diagnostic entities. In this review, the historic evolution of the eating disorder concept up to the recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, has been evaluated. We also examined literature supporting the inclusion of new emergent eating behaviors within the eating disorder spectrum, and their relationship with anorexia, autism, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. In particular, we focused on what is known about the symptoms, epidemiology, assessment, and diagnostic boundaries of a new problematic eating pattern called orthorexia nervosa that could be accepted as a new psychological syndrome, as emphasized by an increasing number of scientific articles in the last few years
multidisciplinarias a nivel mundial.
Chile y Perú (en el mismo mes) marcó 26% de preferencia (UCTV);
Oxytocin receptor and G-protein polymorphisms in patients with depression and separation anxiety
BACKGROUND: The impact of combined variants of Oxytocin Receptor (OXTR) and G
protein β3 subunit genes was investigated in relation to retrospective reports of
childhood as well as contemporary adult separation anxiety (SA), based on
evidence of a β/γ dimer-mediated signaling for OXTR.
METHODS: A case-control association study (225 healthy adults and 188 outpatients
with depression) was performed to establish Risk-Combined Genotype (RCG) of the
studied variants (OXTR rs53576 and the functional Gβ3 subunit rs5443). Current SA
was evaluated by the ASA-27 and retrospective childhood symptoms by the SASI. GG
genotype of OXTR rs53576 combined with T-carrier genotype of Gβ3 rs5443
represented the RCG.
RESULTS: Compared to non-RCG, those with RCG had significantly higher levels of
childhood and adult SA. The RCG was significantly associated with childhood SA
threshold score (OR=2.85, 90%CI: 1.08-7.50). Childhood SA was, in turn, strongly
associated with a threshold SA score in adulthood (OR=15.58; 95% CI: 4.62-52.59).
LIMITATIONS: Although the overall sample size is sizable, comparisons among
subgroups with specific combination of alleles are based on relatively small
numbers.
CONCLUSIONS: Our study indicates that variations in OXTR and Gβ3 genes are
specifically associated with presence and severity of SA in childhood and
adulthood, but not with depression or anxiety in general. Because there is
increasing interest in oxytocin in social behavior, the gene-SA associations
identified have potential translational and clinical relevance
