Intelligent Control for Automation of Yam Storage System Using Fuzzy Logic Controller

    Get PDF
This paper presents the development of intelligent control technique for yam storage system based on fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The expert control of yam storage system is formulated in the form of fuzzy rules. The inputs to the controller are the outside and inside temperature, wind speed and presences of rain. The output is the window opening angle. Simulations were performed for different typical levels of input parameters and also for extreme fictitious conditions. The results shown that, the controller is capable of responding to the changes in temperature conditions by adjusting the window opening angle to keep the internal temperature within acceptable range. The controller also satisfies security requirements due to sudden changes in wind velocity and presence of rain

Islamic banks in Africa are characterized with some technical inefficiencies. The low efficiency of Islamic banks in the region has been linked to high exposure to different risk variables. However, adequate attention has not been given to such risk variables in past studies on Islamic bank efficiency. This study therefore assessed the effects of credit, liquidity and operational risks on efficiency of Islamic banks in Africa. Twenty (20) Islamic banks were selected across Africa for a period of eight (8) years from 2012 to 2019. Data were collected from annual reports of the banks and analysed via Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression. The study found that the banks were not efficient as the average overall technical efficiency (OTE) was 0.748. The inefficiencies could be traced to both managerial inefficiencies (PTE, 0.827) and poor selection of operating scale (SE, 0.902). The study also found that non-performing financing ratio (p = 0.002), deposit-asset ratio (p = 0.019), and operating expenses to earnings ratio (p = 0.000), have a negative and significant relationship with OTE at 5% level of significance. The study concluded that Islamic banks in Africa are not technically efficient and that exposure to credit, liquidity and operational risks had impaired their technical efficiencies. The study recommends employment of staff with requisite skills and knowledge of Islamic banking and finance to enhance their efficiency. Timely identification of potential risks and adequate risk management are also necessary to forestall high risk exposure which jeopardize technical efficiency

Banksรขโ‚ฌโ„ข Price Behaviour and its Determinants in Nigeria

Bank-based financial systems, through the financial intermediation function, enhance economic growth. However, in the performance of this function, banks are faced with issues such as information asymmetry and inefficient institutional qualities that may lead to increased operational costs which reflects as social costs of financial intermediation and are passed on to economic units. Consequently, banks may be confronted with the problem of determining the right price for its products and services. On this premise, this study examines the pricing behaviour of Nigerian commercial banks and its determinants. The random effects regression estimation technique is used on annual panel data of 15 publicly listed Nigerian commercial banks for the period 2005 รขโ‚ฌโ€œ 2017. Results from the investigation show that bank-specific factors such as bank size (0.871, p<0.05) liquidity (0.256, p<0.01), credit quality (0.095, p<0.1), and inflation (0.436, p<0.05) as a macroeconomic variable, have positive and significant effects on bank price behaviour. These findings suggest that the variables are associated with higher social costs of financial intermediation in commercial banks in Nigeria. It is recommended that in order to lower borrowing costs, banks should endeavour to reduce the level of these bank-specific factors which would lead to reduction in costs associated with information asymmetry and inefficiency. In terms of inflation, banks are recommended to factor in inflation related costs into their pricing process while monetary policy regulators should put in place, policies that target reduction in inflation rate

All control systems suffer from problems related to undesirable overshoot, longer settling times and vibrations while going form one state to another state. Most of relevant techniques had been in the form of suggesting modification and improvement in the instrumentation or interfacing part of the control system and the results reported, remain suffering from shortcomings related to hardware parameter dependence and maintenance and operational complexities. Present study was based on a software approach which was focusing on an algorithmic approach for programming a PIC16F877A microcontroller, for eliminating altogether the parametric dependence issues while adding the benefits of easier modification to suit a given control system to changing operational conditions. Said approach was first simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK using the techniques of Proportional Derivative Fuzzy Logic Controller (PD-FLC) whose membership function, fuzzy logic rules and scaling gains were optimized by the genetic algorithm technique. Simulated results were verified by programming the PIC16F877A microcontroller with the algorithm and using it on a temperature control system where a fan was regulated in response to variations in the ambient system temperature. Resulting tabulated performance indices showed a considerable improvement in rising and settling time besides reducing overshoot and steady state error

In this report, the well known parametric method of signals and systems representation is extended to modeling and prediction of cracks on building and road surfaces. Also, a new algorithm based on complex value autoregressive neural network with split linear activation function for the determination of Complex-Value Autoregressive Moving average (CARMA) coefficients is also proposed in this report. Furthermore, mathematical derivation and detail analysis of the proposed CARMA based Complex-Value Neural Network (CVNN) algorithm is also discussed in this work
