Corporate Governance and Earnings Conservatism in Malaysia

    Get PDF
Purpose: This paper aims to investigate whether the revised Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance in 2007 enhances earnings conservatism. In addition, the authors examine the relationship between board of directors’ expertise and conservatism. The third objective is to investigate the relationship between audit committee characteristics and earnings conservatism. Design/methodology/approach: The sample of this study is based on 3,183 firm-year observations for a period of 2004-2009. The authors hand collected the corporate governance variables, whereas the remaining data were extracted from Compustat Global. The authors used two measures of conservatism. The first is the market-based model by Basu’s (1997), and the second measure is the accrual-based measure by Ball and Shivakumar (2005). Findings: The authors find that the revision of Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance 2007 results in improving earnings conservatism. The authors find two audit committee characteristics, namely, audit committee financial expertise and independence increase earnings conservatism, after 2007. However, the authors could not find support whether board financial expertise mix affect conservatism. Research limitations/implications: This study did not consider other possible corporate governance variables that could influence earnings conservatism, as it would be a difficult task to gather them. Originality/value: The authors provide evidence on the role of corporate governance and earnings conservatism in Malaysia

With the increase in power demand and limited power sources has caused the system to operate at its maximum capacity. Therefore, the ability of determine voltage stability before voltage collapse has received a great attention due to the complexity of power system. In this paper a prediction of voltage stability index (VSI) based on radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) for the Iraqi Super Grid network, 400KV. Learning data has been obtained for various settings of load variables using load flow and conventional FVSI method. The input data was performed by using a 135 samples test with different bus voltage (Vb), Bus active and reactive power (Pb, Qb), bus load angle (?b) and FVSIij. The RBFNN model has four input representing the (Vb, Pb, Qb and ?b), sixteen nodes at hidden layer and one output node representing FVSIij have been used to assess the security on line. The proposed method has been tested in the IEEE 30 and a practical system. In Simulation results show that the proposed method is more suitable for on-line voltage stability assessment in term of automatically detection of critical transmission line when additional real or reactive loads are added

Background: Interpregnancy interval (IPI) is a known risk factor for preterm birth. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between IPI and spontaneous preterm birth, and to identify the influence of confounding variables such as socioeconomic status, maternal age, and reproductive history. Methods: This is a hospital-based, case-control study conducted in the department of neonatology, Al-Sadaqa General Teaching Hospital, Aden, during June to September 2011. A case was defined as infant born spontaneously before 37 weeks of gestation and control was a next eligible infant born between 37-42 complete weeks of gestation. Comparison between groups was assessed by statistical analysis and odds ratio were calculated for confounding factors. Results: A total of 100 preterm (cases) and 100 full-term (controls) infants were evaluated for the effects of IPI. Intervals of both <12 months and 12-˂24 months were significantly associated with preterm births compared to control (37% vs 12% and 73% vs 46% respectively, all p<0.05). The risk of preterm birth was higher in association with low number of antenatal care visits (OR=10, 95% CI=1.62-61.46, p=0.018), younger women’s age (OR=8, 95% CI= 1.35-8.4, p=0.001), non-educated mother (OR=7.92, 95% CI=2.49-25.22, p=0.002) and gravid 2-3 (OR=6.5, 95% CI= 5.06-53.8, p=0.001). Significant risk was also observed among mother with low socio-economic status and residents of rural areas (all p<0.05).Conclusions: Short IPI is significant risk factors for preterm birth. This highlights the importance of counseling women in childbearing age to wait at least 24 months between delivery and subsequent conception
