A REVIEW OF DOCUMENTARY FILM AS AUTHENTIC INPUT IN ENHANCING WRITING SKILLS IN ASL SETTING

The objectives of this paper are three folds: firstly, to highlight the studies which have used documentary film as authentic input in teaching second language skills, secondly to review the studies which have used documentary film in enhancing the second language writing skill, and lastly to offer ways to deal with documentary film in improving Arabic as a Second Language (ASL) writing skill. For this purpose, the paper analyses related literature review and previous studies in the field. The literature review shows the concern of second language practitioners as well as scholars in the field in using documentary film in the learning process. However, studies related to ASL are very scarce. There are four steps to be adopted for the purpose of linking documentary film input with enhancing writing skills output. The employment of documentary film in enhancing Arabic writing skills among non-native speakers from the experts’ perspective

Nowadays, having access to authentic material for language learning, such as documentary film programs is very easy for all students and teachers around the world. The importance of this comprehensive input was emphasized by Krashen. At the same time, many studies have highlighted the linguistic, informational, and pedagogical purpose of documentary film in language skill learning. The base of the studies is the cognitive theory of multimedia learning. Accordingly, the present study has two main objectives, firstly to highlight the importance of using documentary film in enhancing the learning of Arabic as a second language (ASL) writing skill. Secondly, to analyse and discuss local experts’ views on the utilization of documentary film in the ASL classroom. For this purpose, a questionnaire was distributed among 12 experts in the field of ASL in Malaysian public universities. Their responses were collected and analysed based on closed-ended and open-ended surveys. The findings and discussion indicated that strong recommendations are given to the credit of the research question. The ASL experts recommend types of documentary films to be utilized, the category of writing skill that can be developed and the appropriate instruction technique to be used in the classroom

يُشبه الفلم الوثائقي التعبير الكتابي باحتوائه على مقدمة الموضوع وعرض أفكاره وخاتمته، ومن المعلوم أن تجهيز النصوص المكتوبة القائمة على البحث العلمي أمرٌ مطلوب من قبل أن يُصنع الفلم الوثائقي؛ لذا للفلم الوثائقي علاقة وطيدة بالتعبير الكتابي، وقد تناولت هذه الدراسة تساؤلين أساسين؛ هما: ما تصورات الخبراء نحو توظيف الأفلام الوثائقية في تنمية مهارات التعبير الكتابي؟ وما اتجاهات الطلبة نحو توظيف نصوص الأفلام الوثائقية في تنمية التعبير الكتابي؟ وتتَّبع الدراسة منهجًا وصفيًّا تحليليًّا للإجابة عن هذين السؤالين؛ إذ توصَّف الدراسات والبحوث المتعلقة باستخدام الأفلام الوثائقية في تعلُّم اللغات الأجنبية، وتحليل آراء الخبراء تجاه التوظيف المقترح، علمًا أن الاستبانة أُرسلت إلى المصححين للتأكد من مصداقية الاستبانة وثباتها، ثم وُزِّعت الاستبانة على اثني عشر خبيرًا في عدة جامعات ماليزية تُقدِّم برامج تعليم اللغة العربية في مستويات تعليمية مختلفة، كما وُزِّعت الاستبانة على ثمانين طالبًا، وتوصَّلت الدراسة إلى آراء الخبراء وتصوراتهم نحو توظيف الأفلام الوثائقية في تعليم التعبير الكتابي، ونوع الفلم المناسب للطلبة، وكذلك الخطوات الأنموذجية لإنجازها في الفصل الدراسي، وكذا توصلت الدراسة إلى آراء الطلبة بشأن اتجاهاتهم نحو توظيف الفلم الوثائقي في تنمية التعبير الكتابي، والأمل كبير لتكون هذه الدراسة إسهامًا مُتواضعًا في مجال تعليم مهارات اللغة العربية للناطقين بغيرها، وعونًا مُفيدًا لمُصَمِّمي المناهج من: المسؤولين في الوزارة، والمؤلفين، والمعلمين؛ بعامة

Tinjauan persepsi dan motivasi pelajar bukan Muslim terhadap pembelajaran dan pengajaran Bahasa Arab Di UiTM Sabah

Bahasa Arab sangat sinonim dengan umat Islam sejak sekian lama sebagai bahasa Al-Quran. Dewasa ini, bahasa ini sudah mendapat tempat yang memberangsangkan dalam kalangan masyarakat Malaysia. Minat kepada pembelajaran bahasa Arab sudah merentasi agama, bangsa dan etnik. Penawaran kursus bahasa Arab kepada pelajar bukan Muslim di institusi-institusi pengajian tinggi menjadi petunjuk bahawa pembelajaran bahasa Arab kian menjadi perhatian. Namun begitu, kajian berkaitan pembelajaran dan pengajaran bahasa Arab dalam kalangan pelajar bukan Muslim dilihat masih kurang. Justeru, fokus utama kajian ini adalah untuk meninjau persepsi dan motivasi pelajar bukan Muslim terhadap pembelajaran bahasa Arab sebagai bahasa asing. Perkara ini penting agar usaha memastikan kandungan silibus yang diajar di universiti selari dengan objektif pembelajaran bahasa ini. Kajian kuantitatif digunakan melibatkan 38 orang pelajar di peringkat Sarjana Muda, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) cawangan Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa majoriti responden menunjukkan motivasi yang tinggi terhadap pembelajaran bahasa asing (M=4.400). Dapatan kajian yang berbeza ditunjukkan apabila melihat kepada motivasi terhadap pembelajaran bahasa Arab yang berada di tahap sederhana tinggi (M=3.935). Manakala persepsi terhadap pengajaran bahasa Arab berada di tahap tinggi (M=4.367). Selain itu, hasil dapatan menunjukkan motivasi pelajar terhadap prospek kerjaya, pelancongan dan perniagaan berada di tahap sederhana tinggi (M=3.600). Beberapa cadangan dan pandangan responden dibincangkan bagi tujuan penambahbaikan proses pembelajaran dan pengajaran bahasa Arab pada masa akan datang. Diharap bahawa hasil dapatan ini memberi manfaat kepada universiti, ahli akademik dan orang yang bertanggungjawab dalam perkara ini

Knowledge management practices (KMP) and academic performance in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Terengganu, Malaysia

Knowledge management is one of the significant fields in the current organization in order to improve the performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between knowledge management practices and academic performance in public institution of higher learning. A questionnaire was used as the main instrument for the data collection. A total of 100 respondents answered the questionnaires which represented 54% of response rate. It was found that knowledge management practices namely knowledge generation, knowledge codification, knowledge sharing and knowledge utilization had positive and significant relationship with academic performance. Thus, in order to achieve higher academic performance, UiTM Terengganu has to ensure that the knowledge management practices were excellent

الأفلام الوثائقية المفضلة لدى الطلبة المتخصصين في اللغة العربية بالجامعة الإسلامية العالمية بماليزيا = Documentary films preferred by Arabic majoring Students in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM)

يُمثل الأفلام الوثائقية مهارة الكتابة بأركانها على مقدمة الموضوع وتقديم أفكارها وخاتمتها، ومن المعلوم أن إعداد النصوص المكتوبة القائمة على البحث العلمي أمرٌ مطلوب من قبل أن يُصنع الفلم الوثائقي؛ لذا للفلم الوثائقي علاقة قوية وقريبة بمهارة الكتابة، وقد تناولت هذه الدراسة ثلاثة أسئلة؛ وهي (1) ما هو مجال الفلم الوثائقي المحبوب من عند الطلبة؟ (2) ما رأيهم الخاص عن نصوص الفلم الطبيعة والبيئة؟ (3) ما رأيهم الخاص عن نصوص والفلم العلوم والتكنولوجيا؟. وتتَّبع هذه الدراسة منهجي كمي وكيفي، إذ تحلل الدراسة عن بيانات من استبانة أسئلة مغلقة للإجابة الأسئلة الثلاث وتحلل الدراسة عن بيانات من استبانة أسئلة مغلقة ومفتوحة للإجابة السوال الثاني والثالث. علمًا أن الاستبانة أُرسلت إلى المصححين للتأكد من مصداقية الاستبانة وثباتها. ثم وُزِّعت الاستبانة على ثمانين طالبًا للكشف عن مجال الفلم الوثائقي المحبوب من عند الطلبة، قبل التعرض إلى تعلم باستخدام الأفلام الوثائقية في الدراسة شبه التجريبية. وتوصَّلت الدراسة إلى أفلام الطبيعة والبيئة أكثر مفضلة عند الطلبة بدلا من أفلام العلوم والتكنولوجيا ****************************************************************************** Documentary films represent the skill of writing with its pillars on the introduction to the topic, presenting its ideas and conclusion, and it is known that preparing written texts based on scientific research is required before the documentary is made. Therefore, the documentary has a strong relationship and close to the skill of writing. Thus, this study addressed three questions; (1) what is the field of documentary film preferred by the students? (2) what do they think about the texts in the nature and the environment documentary films? (3) what do they think about the texts in the science and technology documentary films?. This study applied quantitative and qualitative methodology, as the study analyzes data from closed-ended questions to answer all the research questions, while the study also analyzes data from open-ended questions answer the second and third question. The questionnaire was sent to the experts to verify the accuracy and reliability of the questionnaire. Then the questionnaire was distributed to eighty (80) students to explore the field of documentary film liked by students, before exposure to learning using documentaries in the quasi- experimental study. The study found that nature and environment documentary films are more popular with students rather than science and technology documentary films
