Student-Teachers’ Perception of the Preparedness to Engage in Online Teaching, and Challenges They Face When Teaching Online: A Corpus Analysis of Their Reflexive Journal Entries
The Covid19 pandemic changed the way almost everything is done, including
teaching. Online teaching rose to become the quintessential way mode of
teaching in weeks after being in relative obscurity the two decades of its
existence. Online teaching is now prominent, but research shows that we are
still lacking knowledge in almost every human aspect involved in online
teaching. This study focusses on student-teachers’ perceptions of their own
preparedness to teach online and the challenges they face when teaching
online. This is done by looking into the primary keywords or concepts the
student-teachers use in their own writing. Language is our ubiquitous tool by
which we look into the minds of fellow human beings. Accordingly, this study
looks at a body of language (corpus) compiled from the reflective journals
produced by 23 student-teachers as part of their final assessment portfolio
(+700 pages, +800,000 words). These journals embody their thoughts during
their practical teaching experience. The analysis is carried out using a
concordancer program. By analysing this corpus, we will, (1) identify the most
prominently occurring content words, and (2) the most prominently occurring
words relative to the prominent keywords. The resulting semantic web will
display the concepts the preoccupy the concerns of these respondents thus
giving us an insight into possible areas that we need to focus on in our efforts
to remedy and enhance our online teaching capabilities. Initial findings show
that the most prominent word in their writing ‘students’ with technical and
technology concerns falling far behind
A Case Study: Issues, Challenges and Coping Strategies of Student-Teachers During the COVID-19 Pandemic
This study explores the issues, challenges and student-teachers’ coping
strategies of teaching in a classroom setting during this challenging time of the
Covid-19 pandemic in a new instructional setting of online classes that replace
the face-to-face classroom interaction. Purposeful sampling was employed in
studying 24 student-teachers’ reflective journals through content analysis. The
findings showed that most student-teachers were positive and able to cope with
the issues if enough time were given to them. Based on the themes emerging
from the text analysis, class management and class organisation were not the
main issue. However, other main issues such as Internet accessibility and full
cooperation from the students were more challenging and the actual learning
engagement for the receiving end appears to be compromised due to some
teachers who were inadequately trained for online instruction. (Abstract by authors
8-channel logic analyzer controller design FPGA work in progress
This paper presents a Field Programmable Gate
Array (FPGA) based logic analyzer controller. The controller
circuit is capable of performing data acquisition and signal
display on a 600x480 VGA monitor. The controller was designed
using Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description
Language (VHDL) coding and schematic capture. For validation,
behavioral simulations are carried out using Xilinx ISE
simulator. The synthesis of the controller onto Xilinx Spartan
XC3S200-4FT256 FPGA chip is also presented. The motivation
of this project is to explore the capability of designing a complete
digital system in a single FPGA chip
Practice and Knowledge of Contact Lens Use Among Medical Students of Universiti Teknologi MARA
Contact lens is an optical device that is commonly used to correct refractive errors of the eye. Improper care may lead to ocular related complications. This was a descriptive study to assess contact lens care practice and knowledge on contact lens use among medical students of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Out of seven proper practices of contact lens care listed, only hand washing practice was adhered by most of the wearer. Both groups of contact lens wearer and non-wearers showed a moderate level of knowledge with regards to lens care. Educational programs on awareness and safety usage of contact lens should be emphasized particularly to the medical studentsKeywords: Practice, Knowledge, Contact Lens, Medical StudentseISSN: 2398-4287 © 2019. Awareness and Readiness of Malaysian University Students for Emotion Recognition System
Emotion Recognition System (ERS) identifies human emotion like happiness, sadness, anger, disgust and fear. These emotions can be detected via various modalities such as facial expression analysis, voice intonation, and physiological signals like the brain’s electroencephalogram (EEG) and heart’s electrocardiogram (ECG). The emotion recognition system allows machines to recognized human emotions and reacts to it. It offers broad areas of application, from smart home automation to entertainment recommendation system to driving assistance and to automated security system. It is a promising and interesting field to be explored especially as we are moving towards industrial revolution 5.0. Therefore, a survey was conducted on the awareness and readiness of the usage of emotion recognition system among Malaysian youths, specifically among university students. The findings are presented here. Overall, positive orientation towards the technology is observed among the participants and they are ready for its adoptio
Early childhood care and education trainees’ perspectives of their career path
Education, either formal or informal, plays an important role to help the masses. As such, educators, especially trainees, are entrusted to teach young generations all important elements, principles, or concepts in a wide range of disciplines. Surely, such an undertaking, especially for early childhood care and education, requires quality teachers. In this regard, existing early childhood care and education modules or curricula should be periodically reviewed and revamped (if necessary) to help produce competent teachers who are excellent in all aspects encompassing content, pedagogical, and technological knowledge. This paper discusses the professional growth and development of trainees in early childhood care and education (ECCE) in terms of short- and long-term goals, missions, and career path-planning. The paper also elaborates on the relevant training workshops, courses, modules, and curricula that can be implemented to help improve their practical skills. The discussion also highlights the importance of incentives, such as attractive salaries, bonuses, acknowledgments, and awards, from employers that can not only motivate trainees but also advance their professional growth and development. Certainty, strong development knowledge, practical skills, and experiences can help such trainees to be become highly competent, which can significantly contribute to nation-building efforts in Malaysia
Properties of asphaltic concrete containing sasobit®
With increasing interest in the use of hot mix asphalt in the paving industry, more studies in this field for improvement of hot mix asphalt properties seem to be necessary. Hence, the main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of sasobit® content as modified binder in hot mix asphalt. 60/70 penetration grade asphalt was separately modified with sasobit® at different concentrations ranging from 0% to 4.5%. The influence of sasobit® on the hot mix asphalt mixtures properties were detected through conventional tests i.e. penetration and softening point. In addition, the Marshall stability, abrasion loss, and resilient modulus were also examined. Results indicated that the hot mix asphalt containing Sasobit® additive has significant affect in terms of penetration and softening point. Furthermore, the addition of Sasobit® seemed to improve the stability, abrasion loss and modulus of stiffness
Vending machine purchasing experience among students in the university’s residential college / Mohamad Naqiuddin Md Mansor …[et al.]
University colleges provide cafeteria for student living on campus to purchase foods. These cafeteria open on daily basis, located in separate building and usually within a walking distance from college. A college cafeteria system often has a virtual monopoly on the students due to an isolated location and less competition for on-campus food. There is situation where students must wait for a long time to purchase pre-cooked or ordered foods. The situation will become worse when students are hungry at night and the cafeteria is already closed. In addition most of the cafeterias are closed during semester break since only few students stay at the college. Alternatively, purchasing foods via vending machines are adaptable and acceptable since it operates twenty-four hours seven days a week. Vending machine can provide variety of foods and drinks with affordable price range. This study aims to investigate the purchasing experience among university’s residential college students by using vending machine. The result will help vending machine operators develop and customize their own machines to better serve the customers’ needs
