    Get PDF
Micro-peat (M-P) was demonstrated in the present study as a potential low cost natural adsorbent for the removal of COD and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N) from landfill leachate. A series of batch experiments were carried out under fixed conditions and the influence of mixture ratio was investigated. The characteristics of leachate were then determined. Results indicated that leachate is non-biodegradable with high concentration of COD (2739.06 mg/L), NH3-N (1765.34 mg/L) and BOD5/COD ratio (0.09). The optimum ratio for activated carbon (AC) and M-P in the removal of COD and NH3-N obtained were at 2.5:1.5 (87%) and 1.0:3.0 (65%) respectively. The low-cost natural adsorbent used in the present investigation is an attractive alternative to the conventional adsorbent (AC). Thus, M-P can be appropriated for use in leachate treatment that could be cost-effective due its local availability and adsorption property

DEVELOPMENT OF INTUMESCENT FIRE RETARDANT COATING FOR PROTECTION OF WOODS

    Get PDF
Intumescent coatings make the most efficient way of fire retarding of flammable materials. The coatings swell under the influence of heat and form a thick porous charred layer which acts as thermal barrier that effectively protects the wood substrate against rapid increase of temperature and thereby maintaining the integrity of the structure. The aim of this study was to develop the intumescent coating formulation for wood and to determine the performance of the coating. Bunsen burner test, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were conducted on samples to study the heat shielding effect, morphology and the residual weight of the coatings. In the end, this project was able to present the composition of the coating formulation for wood and the results of the analysis done on the coating

The study addresses the issues of skills enhancement that need be implemented in three distinct phases of enterprise development. Phase I is the developmental phase where potential entrepreneurs are provided with skills needed for venture take-off or start-up. Phase II is the enterprise creation phase while Phase III is the market development phase. This paper also discusses the multiple roles of the Techno Center during each of these distinct phases. Based on the analysis, the study found that there are gaps across industrial sub-sectors in term of various skills needed to create sustainable enterprise and entrepreneur development. Those gaps are cognitive, interpersonal, technical, creativity, computation, communication, intrapersonal, conceptual, managerial, analytical, technological, acoustic, design, self-management, innovative, basic managerial, supervisory, and marketing. The Techno Centre Enterprise Development Model highlights the central and multiple roles required of The Techno Centre in order to effectively provide support and services during various phases of enterprise development. The services include skill development, networking and linkages services; technology transfer and consultancy services; advisory services; and after-care services have different contents at different stages of the enterprise development

Environmental management activities of an infrastructure development project: the case of Beris Dam, Malaysia

    Get PDF
Development projects need to integrate environmental dimensions into project management functions to ensure successful implementation of environmental management and control practices throughout the development process. The management functions include the scope of work for environmental control, the quality of work or performance to be delivered, the scheduling for environmental works, and the most important one is the budget for environmental control. The aim of this paper is to examine and discuss about the environmental dimensions of Beris Dam during its construction and development process. The environmental dimension criteria and elements of the project were examined by means of reviewing environmental control documents used in the project’s construction and development, and site visits. The review reveals that in general the Beris Dam EIA and EMP reports scored between ‘unsatisfactory’ to ‘good’ for the criteria and elements of good environmental practice. These findings indicate the need to increase both effort and implementation of environmental dimensions in project management to help improve the success of implementing environmental management activities in the construction and development of a projec
