    Linking urban form to a liveable city

    This paper intends to show the contribution and relationship of urban form to a liveable city, as many researchers pose the urban form as one of the factors that can worsen or improve the sustainability of the city. The paper will begin by exploring into the theoretical characteristics of the urban form at the macro and micro scale. Urban form models that match the Malaysian cities’ urban form are illustrated in this paper with the idea of giving a larger context of the living ecology for Malaysian communities. There are two types of cities, one that grows in an ad-hoc manner, and the other is being shaped by planners. This paper however, focuses only on a planned city that is the core city for Shah Alam. Consequently, this paper touches briefly on the liveable city concept which is currently being debated among the researchers as a more practical way of looking into the sustainable city issues.     Radio emission from shell-type supernova remnants

    The evolution of the radio emission of shell-type Supernova remnants (SNRs) is modeled within the framework of the simple and commonly used assumptions that the mechanism of diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) is responsible for generating radio emitting electrons and that the magnetic field is the typical interstellar field compressed at the shock. It is considered that electrons are injected into the mechanism in test-particle regime directly from the high energy tail of the downstream Maxwellian distribution function. The model can be applied to most of the observed SNRs. It is shown that the model successfully explains the many averaged observational properties of evolved shell-type SNRs. In particular, the radio surface brightness (Σ\Sigma) evolves with diameter as D(0.3÷0.5)\sim D^{-(0.3 \div 0.5)}, while the bounding shock is strong (Mach number is M10{\mathcal M} \geq10), followed by steep decrease (steeper than D4.5\sim D^{-4.5}) for M<10{\cal M} <10. Such evolution of the surface brightness with diameter and its strong dependence on the environmental parameters strongly reduce the usefulness of ΣD\Sigma - D relations as a tool for determining the distances to SNRs. The model predicts no radio emission from SNRs in the late radiative stage of evolution and the existence of radio-quiet but relatively active SNRs is possible. Our model easily explains very large-diameter radio sources such as the Galactic Loops and the candidates for Hypernova radio remnants. The model predicts that most of the observed SNRs are located in a tenuous phase of the ISM. From the comparison of the model results with the statistics of evolved shell-type SNRs, we were able to estimate the fraction of electrons accelerated from the thermal pool in the range (3÷11)×104(3\div 11) \times 10^{- 4}.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Stock market integration: Malaysia and its major trading partners

    This study examines the stock market integration among Malaysia and its major trading partners by employing Johansen (1988) and Johansen and Juselius (1990) cointegration tests and VECM approach in investigating the dynamic linkages between markets. By using a weekly data, the results indicate that Malaysia stock market is significantly influenced by the stock market development from the major trading partners. The empirical findings are consistent with the view that stronger the bilateral trade ties between two countries, the higher the degree of comovements (Masih and Masih, 1999; Bracker et al., 1999). Since the markets move towards a greater integration, there are no opportunities for international portfolio diversification. In addition, any development in the stock market from major trading partners can not be ignored and should be taken into consideration by the Malaysian government in designing an appropriate policy in the domestic stock market.Cointegration; VECM; major trading partners; stock market integration

    Penerapan ciri-ciri guru berkesan dalam proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran semasa latihan mengajar dalam kalangan Pelajar Sarjana UTHM

    Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenal pasti sejauh mana penerapan ciri-ciri guru berkesan di kalangan pelajar sarjana Fakulti Pendidikan Teknikal dan Vokasional (FPTV) dari Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran dalam kelas semasa menjalani latihan mengajar serta faktor yang paling dominan. Keduanya, kajian ini adalah untuk melihat tahap persepsi pelajar terhadap ciri-ciri guru berkesan pada guru pelatih dan menentukan sama ada terdapat perbezaan dalam memberi persepsi berdasarkan perbezaan jantina. Kajian ini adalah berbentuk kuantitatif. Kajian ini dijalankan di politeknik premier di Malaysia. Data instrumen yang hendak dikaji diperolehi daripada edaran borang soal selidik. Responden adalah terdiri daripada 182 orang pelajar politeknik dimana terdapat pelajar sarjana FPTV yang sedang menjalani latihan mengajar. Seramai lapan orang pensyarah pelatih telah dipilih secara rawak untuk menjadi sampel penilaian oleh responden. Data yang diperolehi akan di analisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan Rasch dan perisian winsteps 3.69.1.11. Nilai pekali Alpha Cronbach untuk kajian ini adalah 0.98. Dapatan kajian mendapati faktor kebolehan pensyarah kaya ilmu pengetahuan merupakan faktor yang paling dominan dengan nilai min logit -0.13. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan tahap persepi pelajar terhadap ciri-ciri guru berkesan dalam kalangan pensyarah pelatih adalah tinggi. Dari segi memberi persepsi terhadap penyarah pelatih berdasarkan ciri-ciri guru berkesan didapati tidak terdapat perbezaan dalam memberi persepsi walaupun berbeza jantina. Pensyarah pelatih dari UTHM telah menerapkan ciri-ciri guru berkesan dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran semasa latihan mengajar kerana berdasarkan dapatan kajian secara keseluruhannya responden menunjukkan tahap persetujuan yang tinggi (skor min 4.25). Ini menunjukkan bahawa pensyarah pelatih telah mengaplikasikan kemahiran dan pengetahuan dari segi pedagogi, psikologi semasa menjalani latihan mengajar

    Chemical and biological reactions of solidification of peat using ordinary portland cement (OPC) and coal ashes

    Construction over peat area have often posed a challenge to geotechnical engineers. After decades of study on peat stabilisation techniques, there are still no absolute formulation or guideline that have been established to handle this issue. Some researchers have proposed solidification of peat but a few researchers have also discovered that solidified peat seemed to decrease its strength after a certain period of time. Therefore, understanding the chemical and biological reaction behind the peat solidification is vital to understand the limitation of this treatment technique. In this study, all three types of peat; fabric, hemic and sapric were mixed using Mixing 1 and Mixing 2 formulation which consisted of ordinary Portland cement, fly ash and bottom ash at various ratio. The mixtures of peat-binder-filler were subjected to the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, bacterial count test and chemical elemental analysis by using XRF, XRD, FTIR and EDS. Two pattern of strength over curing period were observed. Mixing 1 samples showed a steadily increase in strength over curing period until Day 56 while Mixing 2 showed a decrease in strength pattern at Day 28 and Day 56. Samples which increase in strength steadily have less bacterial count and enzymatic activity with increase quantity of crystallites. Samples with lower strength recorded increase in bacterial count and enzymatic activity with less crystallites. Analysis using XRD showed that pargasite (NaCa2[Mg4Al](Si6Al2)O22(OH)2) was formed in the higher strength samples while in the lower strength samples, pargasite was predicted to be converted into monosodium phosphate and Mg(OH)2 as bacterial consortium was re-activated. The Michaelis�Menten coefficient, Km of the bio-chemical reaction in solidified peat was calculated as 303.60. This showed that reaction which happened during solidification work was inefficient. The kinetics for crystallite formation with enzymatic effect is modelled as 135.42 (1/[S] + 0.44605) which means, when pargasite formed is lower, the amount of enzyme secretes is higher

    This research explains the method of hypno-circumcision in the clinic. Generally, the service of circumcision still uses a conventional method and less of attention toward the psychological side. Whereas, this factor is very important on how affecting the patients view's toward circumcision. The main goal of this research is to know the implementation of hypnosis in medical field, especially circumcision process in Klinik Khitan Plus Hypnosis Pabuwaran.The method used in this research is descriptive-analysis. This method is used to provide an overview of the method of hypno-circumcision in Klinik Khitan Plus Hypnosis. This research found that method of hypno-circumcision in Klinik Khitan Plus Hypnosis is similar with hypnosis in general. The method of hypno-circumcision into four stages: preparation stage, induction stage, suggestion stage and termination stage. Preparation of hypno-circumcision in Klinik Khitan Plus Hypnosis begins from consultation to Ms. Novi as receptionist. Then, Induction is a main way to bring someone from conscious to subconscious mind. Giving suggestion is the core stage in the process of hypno-circumcision. Last stage is termination which defines as a gradual step to bring the subject to consciousness
