    Synthesis and efficiency of new pyridine, chromene and thiazole containing compounds as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents

    ABSTRACT. The versatile scaffold, N'-(2-cyanoacetyl)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (3) was utilized in the production of new pyridine, chromene and thiazole derivatives as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents. The synthetic strategy involves the treatment of precursor 3 with various arylidene-malononitrile and 3-aryl-2-cyanoacrylate compounds to furnish substituted pyridines 5 and 7. The interaction of 3 with salicylaldehyde and/or phenyl isothiocyanate followed by cyclization with chloroacetone produced the corresponding 2-imino-2H-chromene-3-carbohydrazide and (thiazol-2-ylidene-acetyl)-salicylic acid hydrazide compounds 8 and 9, respectively. The structural features of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by using spectroscopic methods such as (IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and MS). The new pyridine, chromene and thiazole products showed potent antioxidants and antimicrobial activities. The thiazole derivative 9 exhibited the highest anti-bacterial and antifungal activities against S. aureus (75.0%) and B. subtilis (73.9%) and C. albicans (66.6%). The combination between salicylic acid hydrazide and thiazole moieties in the hybrid 9 indicated the best antioxidant activity (87.9%).                 KEY WORDS: Salicylic hydrazide, Arylidene-malononitrile, Pyridine, Thiazole, Antioxidant   Bull.     Nonuniformity in Lattice Contraction of Bismuth Nanoclusters Heated Near Its Melting Point

    The structural properties of bismuth nanoclusters were investigated with transmission high-energy electron diffraction from room temperature up to 525 ± 6 K. The Bi nanoclusters were fabricated by thermal evaporation at room temperature on transmission electron microscope grids coated with an ultrathin carbon film, followed by thermal and femtosecond laser annealing. The annealed sample had an average cluster size of ∼14 nm along the minor axis and ∼16 nm along the major axis. The Debye temperature of the annealed nanoclusters was found to be 53 ± 6 K along the [012] direction and 86 ± 9 K along the [110] direction. At T = 464 ± 6 K, the diffraction intensity started to deviate from Debye-Waller behavior due to increased lattice anharmonicity. The onset of the melting of the Bi nanoclusters was T ∼ 500 ± 6 K, as measured by the reduction of the nanocluster size through the formation of a liquid shell detected by the width of the diffraction rings. The thermal expansion coefficient of the Bi (012) and (110) planes is positive up to ∼ 499 11 K. However, the expansion coefficient of the Bi (012) planes showed a transition from a positive to a negative value that occurs over the temperature range Tc ∼ 499 ± 11 K to 511 ± 8 K. Compound 4a diazotized to give the corresponding diazonium salt 11 and also, reacted with 2-bromo-1-phenylethanone to give the corresponding pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridin-2-yl)-1-phenylethanone derivative 7 which in turn, used for the preparation of the hydrazone and formamide derivatives 8 and 10 respectively through its reaction with hydrazine hydrate and formic acid respectively.     Coherent Phonons in Bismuth Film Observed by Ultrafast Electron Diffraction

    The generation of coherent phonons in polycrystalline bismuth film excited with femtosecond laser pulse is observed by ultrafast time-resolved electron diffraction. The dynamics of the diffracted intensities from the (110), (202), and (024) lattice planes show pronounced oscillations at 130-150 GHz. The origin of these coherent acoustic phonons is discussed in view of optical phonon decay into two acoustic phonons. Different drop times in the intensity of the diffraction orders are observed and interpreted as anisotropy in the energy transfer rate of coherent optical phonons

    Improving high-altitude UV–Vis resistance of PBO braided tendons of NASA’s super pressure balloons

    Super pressure balloons (SPBs) are used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for ultra-long duration ballooning (ULDB) missions which carry various scientific explorations to support space and earth sciences research activities. The resistance to photo-degradation of load-bearing braided tendons of SPBs is critical to the success of ULDB missions. Recognizing the critical need to improve UV and visible light (UV–Vis) protective performance of p-phenylene-2, 6-benzobisoxazole (PBO) braids, North Carolina State University and NASA’s Balloon Program collaborated to investigate the effectiveness of sheath extrusion method in improving the UV–Vis resistance of tendons. This study included two PBO tendon types – 48,000 (48k) denier tendons and 72,000 (72k) denier tendons. Using a sheath extrusion method, the tendons were covered with UV protective sheath of low-density polyethylene containing two types of UV inhibitors – TiO2 rutile nanoparticles and PolyOne PE White CC®. Bare and sheathed tendons were subjected to artificial UVB exposure in the lab as well as to both high altitude and ground exposure during flight missions conducted by NASA. Protection against radiation exposure was evaluated by determining the loss of tensile strength after exposure. UV–Vis protection of tendons improved with an increase in sheath thickness as well as UV inhibitor content in the sheath. The results also showed that 72k denier braids had higher resistance against UV degradation compared to 48k denier braids. In-flight exposure results confirmed the comparative UV protective performance of tendons exposed to accelerated artificial UVB exposure in lab. 72k denier tendon covered with sheath containing 10% PE White CC® (sheath thickness of 0.37 mm) experienced the lowest strength loss among all tendon samples to high-altitude exposure during flight missions. The study has also utilized UV–Vis transmittance of the sheath covering the braids as a method of evaluating the performance of the protective sheaths

    Comparative studies on the effect of benomyl on growth and ultrastructureof two isolates of phytophthorainfestans from Egypt

    The effect of benomyl as a fungicide on growth rate and ultrastructure of two isolates (P623 and P1319) of Phytophthora infestants is compared. Using different concentrations (50, 100, 200 and 500 ppm) of benomyl caused an inhibition of the mycelial growth of both isolates depending on the degree of concentration. The isolate P1319 was found to be more sensitive to benomyl than the isolate P623. Ultrastructural studies confirmedthese observations. The hyphae of isolate P1319 subjected to 100 and 500 ppm benomyl showed severe changes in the cítoplasm more than isolate P623. The increase of lipid bodies and vacuoles in hyphal cytoplasm of both isolates was the characteristic phenomenon after treatment of benomylparticulary at the concentration of 500 ppm

    Fuzzy Algorithm for Supervisory Voltage/Frequency Control of a Self Excited Induction Generator

    This paper presents the application of a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) to regulate the voltage of a Self Excited Induction Generator (SEIG) driven by Wind Energy Conversion Schemes (WECS). The proposed FLC is used to tune the integral gain (KI) of a Proportional plus Integral (PI) controller. Two types of controls, for the generator and for the wind turbine, using a FLC algorithm, are introduced in this paper. The voltage control is performed to adapt the terminal voltage via self excitation. The frequency control is conducted to adjust the stator frequency through tuning the pitch angle of the WECS blades. Both controllers utilize the Fuzzy technique to enhance the overall dynamic performance.  The simulation result depicts a better dynamic response for the system under study during the starting period, and the load variation. The percentage overshoot, rising time and oscillation are better with the fuzzy controller than with the PI controller type.

    5-Methyl-6-phenyl-2-thioxothieno[2,3-d]pyrimidone derivative (2) reacted with hydrazonoyl chloride derivatives to afford triazolothienopyrimidones 4a-f. Also, acetone-1-(2-amino-5-isopropyl-thiophene-3-carbonitrile) (3) reacted with functional and bifunctional groups to yield the corresponding compounds 5-11.     Phylogenetic characterization of two echinoid species of the southeastern Mediterranean, off Egypt

    AbstractIn this study we investigated the phylogenetics of two sea urchin species, Arbacia lixula and Paracentrotus lividus from the Mediterranean Sea. Specimens were collected from the east coast of Alexandria City, Egypt. Pigmentation examination showed four sympatric color morphotypes (black, purple, reddish brown, and olive green). Mitochondrial DNA was extracted from specimens and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S ribosomal RNA (16S) were sequenced. The results showed that all black specimens constituted the species A. lixula. All other colors belonged to P. lividus, with no apparent differentiation between color morphotypes. Moreover, P. lividus showed high haplotype diversity (COI; H=0.9500 and 16S; H=0.8580) and low values of nucleotide diversity (COI; π=0.0075 and 16S; π=0.0049), indicating a high degree of polymorphism within this species. This study represents the first attempt at DNA barcoding of echinoid species in the southeast Mediterranean off the Egyptian coast, and will provide a base for future phylogenetic analyses
