A FOLLOWER - CENTRIC MODEL: PREDICTORS OF JOB SATISFACTION AND PERCEPTION OF LEADER EFFECTIVENESS IN LEBANESE REGISTERED NURSES
Leaders and their followers share the work environment; they live the same challenges, and face the same problems (Baker, 2007; Uhl-Bien et al., 2014). However, in nursing little is known about the effect of the quality of the manager â follower relationship and work engagement in formulating a followerâs perception of leadership and its impact on job satisfaction. In a country such as Lebanon that has the eighth lowest nurse density in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) and suffers from excessive nurse migration and low nurse satisfaction and retention rates (El-Jardali, Dimassi, Dumit, Jamal, & Mouro, 2009) understanding the factors influencing nurse satisfaction becomes a priority. It is also important for clinical nurse leaders to be associated with engaged and committed followers in order to achieve positive outcomes. Followers are direct care nurses who practice in acute care in the capacity of registered nurses and under the first level supervision of a nurse manager. Effective and engaged followers are those who show intelligence, commitment, integrity, independence, and courage (Kelley, 1988). The relationship between the leader and followers is not unidimensional, but it is rather an interdependent relationship. Followers expect their leaders to be reachable, honest, empathic, visionary, and to be involved in employee development (Sherman, 2012).
Follower-centric relational predictors that impact nursesâ job satisfaction in acute care was the focus of this study. Using a predictive correlation design, this study examined the association between the registered nursesâ (RNsâ) (a) quality of relationship with the nurse manager and (b) work engagement and how these variables impact the registered nursesâ (followers) perception of leadership effectiveness and job satisfaction. Findings of the study supported that better work engagement and positive follower-nurse manager relationship will impact an enhanced perception of leader effectiveness and increase RNs job satisfaction

IMMUNOMODULATORY ROLE OF HONEY AND PROPOLIS ON CARBON TETRACHLORIDE (CCl4) INJECTED RATS
Objective: To evaluate the role of some inflammatory cytokines in hepatic injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Also, the effects of honey bee and propolis extract to modulate the role of these cytokines. Methods: Fifty female Wister rats were divided into five groups, 10 per each group. After 6 w of all treatments, rats were sacrificed, whole blood and serum were collected to determine the number of white blood cells (WBCs), percentage of granulocytes, percentage of lymphocytes and the level of some cytokines such as gamma interferon(INF-ĂÂł), tumor necrosis factor(TNF-ñ) and interleukin-2(IL-2).Results: CCl4 administration resulted in significant increase in the number of WBCs and percentage of granulocytes (P<0.05 and P<0.01 respectively). After treatment with honey and propolis, the number of WBCs was decreased significantly in the case of propolis treatment (P<0.05) compared with CCl4 group. The levels of TNF-ñ and INF-ĂÂł cytokines were significantly decreased (P<0.05) after treatment with honey or propolis compared with CCl4 group. However, there is no significant change in the level of IL-2 after treatment of CCl4 administered rats with honey or propolis. Conclusion: The present study suggested that honey and propolis can improve the immune disorders induced by CCl4 in rats by modulating the levels of inflammatory cytokines, TNF-ñ, and IFN-ĂÂł.Ă
PATIENTSâ ATTITUDES TOWARDS MEDICAL STUDENTSâ PARTICIPATION IN PROCEDURES AND CLINICAL EXAMINATIONS IN LEBANON
Medical practice revolves around patientsâ safety and ensuring their well-being. Patientsâ cooperation with medical students in their examination and management is an indispensable aspect of clinical education. They have the right to accept or refuse the participation of students in their care. However, students need to be integrated in this learning process. This presents a conflict between patientsâ healthcare rights and medical studentsâ learning opportunities. Therefore, this study aims to explore patientsâ attitudes towards the participation of medical students in procedures and examinations in Lebanon and identify the factors that affect their participation. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted using a 34-item questionnaire in Arabic language that was distributed via WhatsApp online platform among the Lebanese adult population in the different governorates during January and February 2021. A total of 729 participants with a mean age of 30.8 completed the survey. Overall, participants showed a positive attitude towards medical studentsâ involvement in their care. It was noted that 61.7% were knowledgeable of their right to accept or refuse medical studentsâ participation in procedures. Participants showed a great acceptance towards medical studentsâ presence in outpatient clinics (71.74%), reading medical files (80.24%), and history taking (81.6%). However, their negative attitude was towards the studentâs involvement in performing genital/rectal examination (54.5%), giving an epidural injection (69.7%) and prescribing medications (53.2%). Patientâs medical condition was the main reason that influences participantsâ decisions about medical studentsâ presence during their procedures (43.8%). A positive attitude towards medical studentsâ participation in procedures and examinations was reflected by the Lebanese population. Patientsâ medical conditions, personalities and religious beliefs were the main reasons affecting participantsâ decisions
Startups and Human Capital Management in Egypt: In Search of Decent Jobs
While startups are considered an important potential contributor to Egyptâs economic growth, they encounter myriad challenges that hinder their ability to reach their potential, sustain their market presence, and their capacity to provide decent job opportunities. Challenges include the difficulty of locating and sustaining funding, the complicated legal and regulatory framework that governs them, the conservative social norms and culture, and the lack of data and information regarding market dynamics and existing opportunities. The research findings revealed that many startups face challenges with their Human Capital Management (HCM), in the planning, acquisition, development, or sanction functions. This policy paper examines Egyptâs current startup ecosystem, focusing on human capital management. The main research question is: what is needed for startups in Egypt to thrive, and more importantly, what can be done to help them provide more decent jobs? The paper adopts the âDecent workâ framework presented by the ILO which defines a decent job as one that is of acceptable quality in terms of ensuring productivity, social protection, rights, and dialogue
Numerical Investigations of parabolic trough collectors using different nanofluids
This paper presents three dimensional numericalsimulations of parabolic trough collectors (PTC) based on twolow-Reynolds eddy viscosity turbulence models, namely;Launder and Sharma k-epsilon and k-omega SST models. Forthe simulations, water was used as the Heat Transfer Fluid(HTF) with four different nanoparticles; Al2O3, TiO2, CuO andCu. Different volume fractions () of the nanoparticles wereinvestigated for various Reynolds (Re) numbers with uniformheat flux. Results showed that the overall performance of thesystem is more sensitive to changes in the thermal properties ofnanofluid than the thermal properties of the HTF. At a volumefraction of 6% and a Re number of 70,000, the Nusselt number(Nu) enhancement of nanofluids TiO2-water, Al2O3-water, CuOwater and Cu-water were found to be 21.5%, 20.2%, 18.11%and 15.7% respectively while the performance evaluationcriteria (PEC) were 1.214, 1.2, 1.18 and 1.155 respectively
Clinical Utility of Melatonin in Fibromyalgia Diagnosis
ààààFibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic disease with an unknown etiology, which is characterized by reduced pain threshold (hyperallgesia) & pain with normally innocuous stimuli (allodynia). This diffuse pain is often disease associatedàwith wide range ofàother symptoms including fatigue, sleep disturbance, stiffness& more.FMS often occur concomitantlyàwith other rheumatologic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis(RA), systemic lupus erthymatosus(SLE).ààààààThe pineal hormone melatonin (MT) exerts a variety of effects on the immune system. MT activates immune cells and enhances inflammatory cytokine and nitric oxide production. Methods:àWe were studied 75 subjects, 55 of subjects were FMS patients defined by the American Colleague of Rheumatology (ACR 2010) criteria. Patients' mean age was 32.5 ñ 13.9 years. They were classified into two groups: Group I of 25àprimary FMS patients . Group II of 30 secondary FMS patients with other rheumatologic disease such as RA, SLE. Twenty age and sex matched healthy individuals were included in the study as a control group. Results:Mean Melatonin titers were significantly reduced (p<0.0001) in primary FMs patients compared to the controls (21.32vs. 30.9 pg/ml), but they were significantly elevated (p<0.0001) in secondary FMS compared to controls (138.1vs.30.9 pg/ml). Our data imposed that, in 1ry FMS there were negative correlations of MT titers with tender points (r=-0.848**,p<0.0001), sleep disturbance(r=-0.963**, p< 0.0001**), Fatigue (r= -0.972**, p<0.001**), WPI (r= -0,953 **, p<0.0001) and SS (r=-0.901**, p< 0.0001).àConclusions:In primary FMS patients melatonin level is lower than melatonin level in control, but MT level is high in secondary FMS patients. There was a negative correlation between MT with tender points, sleep disturbance, fatigue, SS & WPI. But there was a positive correlation between MT & cognitive symptoms
Significance of GOs, GNPs and CNTs' Nanomaterials on the Mechanical Properties of Cement
This study reports the statistical significance of using Graphene Oxides (GOs), Graphene Nanoplatelets (GNPs) and Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) on the mechanical properties of cement paste. Samples containing several nanoparticles' weight fractions were prepared and tested for flexure and compression. The testing results were then statistically analysed using the t-statistical method to investigate the significance of using Nanomaterials on the properties of cement paste. The results highlighted the significance of using GOs and CNTs on the flexural strength of cement paste. Mixes containing 0.04% GOs, 0.08% GOs and 0.12% CNTs could enhance the flexural strength by at least 45% compared to the plain control mix. On the other hand, test results showed the significance of using 0.04% GNPs, 0.08% CNTs and 0.12 % GOs in increasing the compressive strength of cement paste by at least 10% compared to the plain control mix. Microstructural analysis using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) showed that proper Nanofilaments dispersion in most batches. Furthermore, the analysis highlighted the nanoparticles' impediment within the cement hydration products
