    Git in an Educational Context

    Get PDF
The version control system Git is commonly used in computer science education. Best practice use of Git is a relevant professional skill that students need to learn, but Git also is a natural choice for efficient collaboration on programming assignments. The learning context is however different from the professional context. In this paper we explore the implications Git has in an educational context using a questionnaire and result implies that Git influences some students’ experience with learning and group work. However, it also verifies previous findings that using Git is beneficial for student collaboration. Data from the use of Git can potentially inform students and educators about aspects of group work. A prototype mirroring tool using GitLab data has been developed to investigate the data’s potential and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers were conducted to evaluate and explore the tool. Results suggest that GitLab data is well-suited to provide students new insight into their work and educators with an efficient method for monitoring project work and student groups

Spontaneous Volunteering During the Utøya Terror Attacks – A Document Study

During the terrorist attacks in Norway 22th of July 2011, 77 persons was killed and many more injured. The attacks led to massive, multifaceted efforts of civil society, especially concerning the attacks at Utøya, for example - nearby civilians took part in dangerous rescue missions in private boats and more than 250 youths was taken care of in an ad hoc rescue center at a nearby camping. Most of the post-catastrophic research and investigations on the terror attacks have focused on the efforts of the official first responders and their respective authorities, and to a lesser degree highlighting the role of response from community and bystanders. As part of the ENGAGE project, we conduct a document study to shed light on civil society contributions to societal resilience during the terror attacks at Utøya. Based on academic literature investigation reports, newspaper articles and autobiographical books, we represent the Utøya terror attacks from what is known regarding helpers. We emphasize four domains of analysis, where we identify and discuss i) characteristics of the academic literature on the Utøya attacks, ii) a typology of actors, ii) volunteer coping actions, and iii) contextual factors. The findings show a dynamic and autonomous nature of spontaneous volunteering, influenced by contextual factors like degree of trust in formal response organizations, spatial proximity, professional and local knowledge.publishedVersio

Auntie knows best? public broadcasters and current affairs knowledge

Public service broadcasters (PSBs) are a central part of national news media landscapes. In many countries, PSBs are the first choice of citizens when it comes to news providers. And in perhaps more countries still, PSBs are thought of as specialists in provision of hard news. We test this proposition here using survey data from a large crossnational survey involving indicators of current affairs knowledge and media consumption. Specifically, we examine whether exposure to public versus commercial news influences the knowledge citizens possess about current affairs, both domestically and internationally. We also test, using propensity score analysis, whether there is variation across PSBs in this regard. Results indicate that compared to commercial news, watching PSB has a net positive influence on knowledge of hard news, though not all PSBs are equally effective in contributing to knowledge acquisition. This knowledge gap between PSB and commercial news media consumption appears to be mitigated by factors such as de jure independence, proportion of public financing, and audience share

This master's thesis examines how Norway's stock market volatility is affected by the continuing invasion of Ukraine. Our study attempts to offer useful insights for investing strategies and decision-making by investigating the relationship between investor attention and market dynamics during times of international war. We examine weekly changes in stock returns using data from the financial markets, and we applied an abnormal search volume index based on the volume of searches for the term "Ukraina" in Google. The research adds to the body of knowledge, advances our knowledge of how geopolitical crises can impact financial markets, and has applications for investors, analysts, scholars and the general public. This study emphasizes the significance of considering geopolitical issues when analysing market risks and provides methods for mitigating investments in uncertain times. We aim to provide a framework for evaluating the effects of geopolitical events on financial markets, aiding stakeholders in navigating risks associated with geopolitical tensions. We can conclude that there is a correlation between stock returns for the 20 largest companies on the Oslo Stock Exchange and Google search results for the word Ukraine. Therefore, Google Trends search volume may be used as a proxy to determine stock returns in times of geopolitical conflict

The first chapter is a literature review of quinone monoacetals where is discussed their preparation and use in organic synthesis. Phenolic oxidation by phenyliodonlum diacetate is an excellent method to prepare quinone monoacetals and it is described in the following chapter. The third chapter deals with a conversion of quinone monoacetal to the chiral spirodienone in the presence of Lewis acid and diols. Addition and epoxidation reactions with the chiral spirodienone have been studied. This work is described in chapter four. The experimental details are given in chapter five
