The approach was based on over 300 floristic surveys covering the different parts of the Moroccan Central Plateau forests. It also entails the analysis and processing of data from studies in the region. The results indicate that there are 233 taxa belonging to 56 families
A Contribution to the Knowledge of Vascular Flora of the Site of Biological and Ecological Interest of Kharouba in the Central Plateau of Morocco
The current study aims to quantify and evaluate the Tetraclinis stands (Tetraclinis articulata (Vahl.) Masters) richness and floristic diversity at Kharouba Site of Biological and Ecological Interest (SBEI). The 150 floristic surveys conducted in the site allowed us to inventory 143 species distinguished with rare taxa majority that are distributed over 54 families and 123 genera. This reduced number of taxa reflects the alarming biodiversity deterioration of the SBEI. The study also enabled us to define the biological spectrum of the study area that is characterized by a significant abundance of Therophytes
Spatio-temporal analysis of North African forest cover dynamics using time series of vegetation indices – case of the Maamora forest (Morocco)
North African forest areas play several roles and functions and represent a heritage of great economic and ecological importance. As a result of global changes, that act independently or synergistically, these areas are currently undergoing a pronounced degradation and their productivity is decreasing due to several factors. This work aims to characterize spatio-temporal dynamics of vegetation within the Maamora forest. This forest is considered as the most extensive cork oak woodland in the world and is divided, from west to east, into five cantons A, B, C, D and E. The data, extracted between 2000–2021 from MODIS NDVI/EVI images of 250 m, were analyzed using statistical parameters with the Pettitt homogeneity and the Mann-Kendall trend tests, with their seasonal and spatial components, in order to better consider the vegetation distribution of this forest. Results show a clear temporal and spatial (inter-canton) variability of vegetation intensity, unrelated to the continental gradient. In fact, recorded mean values in cantons C and E are significantly higher than those of cantons B and D respectively. This is confirmed by both regressive and progressive trends, which were identified respectively from the months of March 2012 and October 2008, in the data series of cantons B and E successively. Spatially, the regressive dynamic remains generalized and affects more than 26.7% of the Maamora’s total area with extreme rates (46.1% and 14.0%) recorded respectively by the two aforementioned cantons. Similarly, all the stand types in canton B show the highest regressive rates, especially the cork oak regeneration strata (75.4%) and the bare lands (86.1%), which may explain the positive tendencies identified by the related series during the fall season. However, the cantons C and E record the lowest rates, respectively, for natural stands of cork oak and artificial plantations. These results highlight also the absence of a causal relationship between the contrasting vegetation dynamics of the Maamora and the climatic conditions, expressed here by the continental gradient. However, they do highlight the effects of other factors, particularly those of a technical nature
Assessing the impact of vegetation cover dynamics on water erosion using PAP/RAC method and remote sensing in the Kharouba watershed (Central Plateau, Morocco)
Mots clés: Couvert végétal, Erosion hydrique, Bassin versant, méthodologie PAP/CAR, Plateau Central, MarocThis work aims to assess the impact of the vegetation cover on water erosion in Kharouba watershed in Morocco Central Plateau. The methodology is based on diachronic analysis of land cover between 1986 and 2008, using 1986 aerial photographs and a 2.5 m resolution SPOT satellite image from 2008. The land cover maps obtained were used to develop erosion status maps for 1986 and 2008, using PAP/RAC methodology. The results achieved highlight the regressive evolution of vegetation cover between 1986 and 2008. This decline contributed to the increase of water erosion risk in Kharouba watershed, which causes the expansion of vulnerable areas to water erosion from 39% of the basin surface in 1986 to 45% in 2008.

Mapping of fire intensity and of sensibility to crown fires in Mediterranean forests. Case of the province of Chefchaouen in northern Morocco
The current evolution of the forest fire regime poses new challenges to the usual practices of forest management plans and forest fires strategies. The implementation of wisely measured actions on the ground in terms of preventive silviculture, water points or fire breaks, requires a deep understanding and a fine mapping of the fire behaviour. This paper focuses first on mapping the fire intensity using the Byram formula in the province of Chefchaouen, one of the most affected regions by this scourge in Morocco. The fire speed of spread is estimated using the parametric equations derived from the physical model FireStar, the spatially varying wind fields according to the relief are carried out by the Windninja software. Secondly, the localization of sensitive areas to crown fires was carried out using the Nelson & Adkins model. The ArcGIS model-builder has been very useful to produce automatically all different maps (intensity map, propagation speed map, flame height, etc.). Results show that almost 55 % of forest areas have a fire intensity ranging from medium to very high (> 1700 Kw/m), among which 11 % with extreme intensity values (over 7000 kW/m). Also the study reveals that 30 % of the forests in the study area are sensitive to crown fires mainly located in zones with flames exceeding 2 m height. On the other hand, the spatially varying wind fields using WindNinja shows that the input wind speed (2.8 m/s) has almost tripled (7.72 m/s) on 83 % of the territory, and the propagation speed reaches a maximum of 1.5 m/s (5.4 km/h) on almost 10 % of the forested area

Conservation assessments and Red Listing of the endemic Moroccan flora (monocotyledons)
Morocco constitutes an important centre of plant diversity and speciation in the Mediterranean Basin. However, numerous species are threatened by issues ranging from human activities to global climatic change. In this study,
we present the conservation assessments and Red Listing of the endemic Moroccan monocotyledons according to
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria and categories. For each species, we include basic
taxonomic information, local names and synonyms, uses, a distribution map, extent of occurrence, area of
occupancy, population size and trend, a description of habitats and ecological requirements, and a discussion of the
threats affecting the species and habitats. We assessed the threatened status of the endemic Moroccan monocotyledons
at the species level (59 species) using the IUCN Red List criteria and categories (Version 3.1). This study
shows the high extinction risk to the Moroccan monocotyledon flora, with 95% of threatened species (20% Critically
Endangered, 50% Endangered, 25% Vulnerable) and only 5% not threatened (2% Near Threatened and 3% Least
Concern). The flora is thus of conservation concern, which is poorly recognized, both nationally and internationally.
The study presents the first part and so far the only national IUCN Red Data List for a large group of Moroccan
plants, and thus provides an overview of the threatened Moroccan flora. This IUCN Red List is an important first
step towards the recognition of the danger to Moroccan biodiversity hotspots, conservation of threatened species
and the raising of public awareness at national and international levels
Chemical and biological study of essential oils of Moroccan Juniperus phoenicea ssp. lycia and Juniperus phoenicea ssp. turbinata. The composition of the essential oils of the branches and berries of Juniperus phoenicea (Cupressaceae), J. phoenicea ssp. lycia (plain) and J. phoenicea ssp. turbinata (mountain), obtained by hydrodistillation, collected from Morocco, was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The yields of essential oils were varying in function of the subspecies and of the part of the plant studied. The essential oils of these tree species are largely dominated by α-pinene and may be an important source of this component of a great interest on the international market. The effectiveness of essential oils from branches of the subspecies lycia against fungi decay wood has also been emphasized
