Evaluation of the relationship between soybean and biodiesel production. Abstract. The objective of this study was to evaluate the importance of soybean production for the biodiesel development in Brazil and what the biofuel represents to the oilseed market. The analysis of biodiesel?s supply and demand has shown that companies have production capacity to attend B5 and that the plants of the south region are the most efficient in terms of sales. The study about soybean production revealed that its cultivation is immersed in an environment surrounded by great changes and pressures for environmental sustainability. Although Brazil is a great soybean exporter, the trend points to the evolution of the volume of oil producing, what, in the most, occurs due to the increase in the production of grain. It was found that the spread of soybean cultivation in different regions of the country, with sufficient production scale to attend the significant volumes of biodiesel production, became possible to combat the chronic problems in national agribusiness logistics. Finally, the analysis of the National Production and Use of Biodiesel showed that soybean oil is the raw material that supplies almost 80% of biodiesel production in Brazil. The development of other sources for diversification of feedstock for biodiesel production, such as beef tallow, chicken fat, cotton and castor beans, will allow to reduce the pressure on soybeans and to make the business more competitive

VSCAN: An Enhanced Video Summarization using Density-based Spatial Clustering

In this paper, we present VSCAN, a novel approach for generating static video summaries. This approach is based on a modified DBSCAN clustering algorithm to summarize the video content utilizing both color and texture features of the video frames. The paper also introduces an enhanced evaluation method that depends on color and texture features. Video Summaries generated by VSCAN are compared with summaries generated by other approaches found in the literature and those created by users. Experimental results indicate that the video summaries generated by VSCAN have a higher quality than those generated by other approaches.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1401.3590 by other authors without attributio

Pressure and chemical substitution effects in the local atomic structure of BaFe2As2

    Get PDF
The effects of K and Co substitutions and quasi-hydrostatic applied pressure (P<9 GPa) in the local atomic structure of BaFe2As2, Ba(Fe{0.937}Co{0.063})2As2 and Ba{0.85}K{0.15}Fe2As2 superconductors were investigated by extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements in the As K absorption edge. The As-Fe bond length is found to be slightly reduced (<~ 0.01 Angstroms) by both Co and K substitutions, without any observable increment in the corresponding Debye Waller factor. Also, this bond is shown to be compressible (k = 3.3(3)x10^{-3} GPa^{-1}). The observed contractions of As-Fe bond under pressure and chemical substitutions are likely related with a reduction of the local Fe magnetic moments, and should be an important tuning parameter in the phase diagrams of the Fe-based superconductors.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

A Revised Model for the Formation of Disk Galaxies: Low Spin and Dark-Halo Expansion

We use observed rotation velocity-luminosity (VL) and size-luminosity (RL) relations to single out a specific scenario for disk galaxy formation in the LCDM cosmology. Our model involves four independent log-normal random variables: dark-halo concentration c, disk spin lam_gal, disk mass fraction m_gal, and stellar mass-to-light ratio M/L_I. A simultaneous match of the VL and RL zero points with adiabatic contraction requires low-c halos, but this model has V_2.2~1.8 V_vir (where V_2.2 and V_vir are the circular velocity at 2.2 disk scale lengths and the virial radius, respectively) which will be unable to match the luminosity function (LF). Similarly models without adiabatic contraction but standard c also predict high values of V_2.2/V_vir. Models in which disk formation induces an expansion rather than the commonly assumed contraction of the dark-matter halos have V_2.2~1.2 V_vir which allows a simultaneous fit of the LF. This may result from non-spherical, clumpy gas accretion, where dynamical friction transfers energy from the gas to the dark matter. This model requires low lam_gal and m_gal values, contrary to naive expectations. However, the low lam_gal is consistent with the notion that disk galaxies predominantly survive in halos with a quiet merger history, while a low m_gal is also indicated by galaxy-galaxy lensing. The smaller than expected scatter in the RL relation, and the lack of correlation between the residuals of the VL and RL relations, respectively, imply that the scatter in lam_gal and in c need to be smaller than predicted for LCDM halos, again consistent with the idea that disk galaxies preferentially reside in halos with a quiet merger history.Comment: 28 pages, 16 figures, ApJ accepted, minor changes from unpublished version, uses emulateapj.cls, high-resolution version available at http://www.ucolick.org/~dutton/65200/hi-res-version/ms.dutton.v2_hr.p

Spin Transfer from a Ferromagnet into a Semiconductor through an Oxide barrier

We present results on the magnetoresistance of the system Ni/Al203/n-doped Si/Al2O3/Ni in fabricated nanostructures. The results at temperature of 14K reveal a 75% magnetoresistance that decreases in value up to approximately 30K where the effect disappears. We observe minimum resistance in the antiparallel configurations of the source and drain of Ni. As a possibility, it seems to indicate the existence of a magnetic state at the Si/oxide interface. The average spin diffusion length obtained is of 650 nm approximately. Results are compared to the window of resistances that seems to exist between the tunnel barrier resistance and two threshold resistances but the spin transfer seems to work in the range and outside the two thresholds
