Spatial Multiplexing of QPSK Signals with a Single Radio: Antenna Design and Over-the-Air Experiments
The paper describes the implementation and performance analysis of the first
fully-operational beam-space MIMO antenna for the spatial multiplexing of two
QPSK streams. The antenna is composed of a planar three-port radiator with two
varactor diodes terminating the passive ports. Pattern reconfiguration is used
to encode the MIMO information onto orthogonal virtual basis patterns in the
far-field. A measurement campaign was conducted to compare the performance of
the beam-space MIMO system with a conventional 2-by-?2 MIMO system under
realistic propagation conditions. Propagation measurements were conducted for
both systems and the mutual information and symbol error rates were estimated
from Monte-Carlo simulations over the measured channel matrices. The results
show the beam-space MIMO system and the conventional MIMO system exhibit
similar finite-constellation capacity and error performance in NLOS scenarios
when there is sufficient scattering in the channel. In comparison, in LOS
channels, the capacity performance is observed to depend on the relative
polarization of the receiving antennas.Comment: 31 pages, 23 figure

In our experiment, we found that the resistance of vacuum-dried -DNA
exceeds at 295 K. Bechhoefer and Sen have raised a number of
objections to our conclusion. We provide counter arguments to support our

Automated Grain Yield Behavior Classification
A method for classifying grain stress evolution behaviors using unsupervised learning techniques is presented. The method is applied to analyze grain stress histories measured in-situ using high-energy X-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM) from the aluminum-lithium alloy Al-Li 2099 at the elastic-plastic transition (yield). The unsupervised learning process automatically classified the grain stress histories into four groups: major softening, no work-hardening or softening, moderate work-hardening, and major work-hardening. The orientation and spatial dependence of these four groups are discussed. In addition, the generality of the classification process to other samples is explored
Diffusion mechanisms of localised knots along a polymer
We consider the diffusive motion of a localized knot along a linear polymer
chain. In particular, we derive the mean diffusion time of the knot before it
escapes from the chain once it gets close to one of the chain ends.
Self-reptation of the entire chain between either end and the knot position,
during which the knot is provided with free volume, leads to an L^3 scaling of
diffusion time; for sufficiently long chains, subdiffusion will enhance this
time even more. Conversely, we propose local ``breathing'', i.e., local
conformational rearrangement inside the knot region (KR) and its immediate
neighbourhood, as additional mechanism. The contribution of KR-breathing to the
diffusion time scales only quadratically, L^2, speeding up the knot escape
considerably and guaranteeing finite knot mobility even for very long chains.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Accepted to Europhys. Let
Nova Sagittarii 1994 #1 (V4332 Sagittarii): The Discovery and Evolution of an Unusual Luminous Red Variable Star
We report photometry and spectroscopy of the evolution of Nova Sagittarii
1994 #1 (V4332 Sagittarii) during outburst. We compare the photometric and
spectral evolution of this outburst to known classes of outbursts -- including
classical novae and outbursts occurring on symbiotic stars -- and find this
object does NOT conform to any known class of outburst. The closest match to
the behavior of this unusual object is M31 RV, an extremely luminous and red
variable object discovered in the bulge of M31 in 1988. However, the temporal
behavior and maximum luminosity of the two events differ by several orders of
magnitude, requiring substantial intrinsic variation if these two events are
members the same type of outburst.
Our model of the spectroscopic evolution of this outburst shows that the
effective temperature cooled from 4400 K to 2300 K over the three month span of
our observations. In combination with line diagnostics in our later spectra,
including [OI] lambda 5577 and the dramatic increase in the Halpha to Hbeta
ratio, we infer the existence of a cool, dense (N_e ~ 10^{8-9} cm^{-3})
envelope that is optically thick in the Hydrogen Balmer recombination lines
(case C). We suggest that a nuclear event in a single star, in which a slow
shock drove the photosphere outwards, can power the observed luminosity

Covariate balance in a Bayesian propensity score analysis of beta blocker therapy in heart failure patients
Regression adjustment for the propensity score is a statistical method that reduces confounding from measured variables in observational data. A Bayesian propensity score analysis extends this idea by using simultaneous estimation of the propensity scores and the treatment effect. In this article, we conduct an empirical investigation of the performance of Bayesian propensity scores in the context of an observational study of the effectiveness of beta-blocker therapy in heart failure patients. We study the balancing properties of the estimated propensity scores. Traditional Frequentist propensity scores focus attention on balancing covariates that are strongly associated with treatment. In contrast, we demonstrate that Bayesian propensity scores can be used to balance the association between covariates and the outcome. This balancing property has the effect of reducing confounding bias because it reduces the degree to which covariates are outcome risk factors
Biogeographic anomaly or human introduction: A cryptogenic population of tree skink (Reptilia: Squamata) from the Cook Islands, Oceania
Archaeological and molecular data have revealed that the present day faunas of many island groups in Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia are not representative of the biodiversity generated within this region on an evolutionary timescale. Erroneous inferences regarding the mechanisms of speciation and the significance of long distance dispersal in shaping the present diversity of these island systems have resulted from this incomplete diversity and distributional data. The lizard fauna east of Samoa has been suggested to derive entirely from human-mediated introductions, a distribution congruent with biogeographic patterns for other Pacific species. Distinguishing between introduced populations and those that result from natural colonization events is difficult, although molecular data provide a useful means for elucidating population history and identifying the likely sources of introductions. We use molecular data (1726 bp of mitochondrial DNA and 286 bp of nuclear DNA) to evaluate a population of arboreal lizards from the Cook Islands and to determine whether this arboreal skink population is the sole endemic component of the lizard fauna east of Samoa or the result of human-mediated introduction. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London
