    Habitat Distribution And Frond Reorientation As Photoprotection And Drought-Avoidance Mechanisms In Christmas Fern (Polystichum Acrostichoides) In The Southern Appalachian Mountains

    Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides (Michx.) Schott) is a ubiquitous wintergreen herb found in the forests of the Appalachian Mountains, yet it is distributed asymmetrically on the landscape, favoring north-facing slopes and shady stream banks. In late autumn, the fronds of Christmas fern undergo an irreversible reorientation, bending at the base of the stipe and lying flat on the forest floor. These fronds maintain high chlorophyll concentrations throughout winter and are photosynthetically active on warm winter days and in early spring before canopy emergence. In three populations in the Appalachian State University Biological Preserve, I prevented fronds from reorienting using wooden dowels and floral wire, artificially holding them up over winter. The fronds that were prevented from reorienting to a prostrate position suffered severe photoinhibition characterized by extensive leaf necrosis coupled with significant declines in light-saturated gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), and total chlorophyll, while a control group showed little or no declines as winter progressed. “Surrogate ferns” were constructed and mounted with light sensors in order to characterize the light environment at the leaf level on north- and south- facing slopes. Inclined fronds experienced much higher light levels than prostrate fronds (oriented horizontally), on both slopes, and the sensor on the south-facing slope experienced 22 days in which light exceeded 500 µmol m-2 s-1 and the air temperature at the leaf level was below freezing. Conversely, on the north-facing slope, these conditions only occurred on one day. This result suggests that frond reorientation is sufficient to prevent photoinhibition in overwintering fronds of Christmas fern by reducing winter light, and may be a significant factor limiting its distribution on south-facing slopes where it is bright and cold during winter. Christmas ferns demonstrated remarkable resilience in a controlled dry-down, with little physiological decline as midday water potentials exceeded -1.0 MPa and soil water content approached 0%. Presently, it is unclear how fern water relations contribute to frond reorientation or distribution on the landscape, but the microclimate data suggest that south- facing slopes are not dry enough to induce significant physiological stress on Christmas fern, and that winter light may have more influence. Forecasted changes in local climate may alter the range and distribution of Christmas fern. Our results provide insight into how this species might be affected, with significant ecological implications for understory herbs in our region

    Potential Geographic Distribution of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Invasion (Halyomorpha halys)

    BACKGROUND: The Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), native to Asia, is becoming an invasive species with a rapidly expanding range in North America and Europe. In the US, it is a household pest and also caused unprecedented damage to agriculture crops. Exploring its climatic limits and estimating its potential geographic distribution can provide critical information for management strategies. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPALS: We used direct climate comparisons to explore the climatic niche occupied by native and invasive populations of BMSB. Ecological niche modelings based on the native range were used to anticipate the potential distribution of BMSB worldwide. Conversely, niche models based on the introduced range were used to locate the original invasive propagates in Asia. Areas with high invasion potential were identified by two niche modeling algorithms (i.e., Maxent and GARP). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Reduced dimensionality of environmental space improves native model transferability in the invade area. Projecting models from invasive population back to native distributional areas offers valuable information on the potential source regions of the invasive populations. Our models anticipated successfully the current disjunct distribution of BMSB in the US. The original propagates are hypothesized to have come from northern Japan or western Korea. High climate suitable areas at risk of invasion include latitudes between 30°-50° including northern Europe, northeastern North America, southern Australia and the North Island of New Zealand. Angola in Africa and Uruguay in South America also showed high climate suitability

    Onset of main Phanerozoic marine radiation sparked by emerging Mid Ordovician icehouse

Available on open access from Springer Nature via the DOI in this recordThe Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE) was the most rapid and sustained increase in marine Phanerozoic biodiversity. What generated this biotic response across Palaeozoic seascapes is a matter of debate; several intrinsic and extrinsic drivers have been suggested. One is Ordovician climate, which in recent years has undergone a paradigm shift from a text-book example of an extended greenhouse to an interval with transient cooling intervals - at least during the Late Ordovician. Here, we show the first unambiguous evidence for a sudden Mid Ordovician icehouse, comparable in magnitude to the Quaternary glaciations. We further demonstrate the initiation of this icehouse to coincide with the onset of the GOBE. This finding is based on both abiotic and biotic proxies obtained from the most comprehensive geochemical and palaeobiological dataset yet collected through this interval. We argue that the icehouse conditions increased latitudinal and bathymetrical temperature and oxygen gradients initiating an Early Palaeozoic Great Ocean Conveyor Belt. This fuelled the GOBE, as upwelling zones created new ecospace for the primary producers. A subsequent rise in δ(13)C ratios known as the Middle Darriwilian Isotopic Carbon Excursion (MDICE) may reflect a global response to increased bioproductivity encouraged by the onset of the GOBE.Our expeditions to Russia were mainly funded by the Carlsberg Foundation.     Extracellular Hsp72 concentration relates to a minimum endogenous criteria during acute exercise-heat exposure

    Extracellular heat-shock protein 72 (eHsp72) concentration increases during exercise-heat stress when conditions elicit physiological strain. Differences in severity of environmental and exercise stimuli have elicited varied response to stress. The present study aimed to quantify the extent of increased eHsp72 with increased exogenous heat stress, and determine related endogenous markers of strain in an exercise-heat model. Ten males cycled for 90 min at 50% O2peak in three conditions (TEMP, 20°C/63% RH; HOT, 30.2°C/51%RH; VHOT, 40.0°C/37%RH). Plasma was analysed for eHsp72 pre, immediately post and 24-h post each trial utilising a commercially available ELISA. Increased eHsp72 concentration was observed post VHOT trial (+172.4%) (P<0.05), but not TEMP (-1.9%) or HOT (+25.7%) conditions. eHsp72 returned to baseline values within 24hrs in all conditions. Changes were observed in rectal temperature (Trec), rate of Trec increase, area under the curve for Trec of 38.5°C and 39.0°C, duration Trec ≥ 38.5°C and ≥ 39.0°C, and change in muscle temperature, between VHOT, and TEMP and HOT, but not between TEMP and HOT. Each condition also elicited significantly increasing physiological strain, described by sweat rate, heart rate, physiological strain index, rating of perceived exertion and thermal sensation. Stepwise multiple regression reported rate of Trec increase and change in Trec to be predictors of increased eHsp72 concentration. Data suggests eHsp72 concentration increases once systemic temperature and sympathetic activity exceeds a minimum endogenous criteria elicited during VHOT conditions and is likely to be modulated by large, rapid changes in core temperature

    Detection of high-velocity material from the wind-wind collision zone of Eta Carinae across the 2009.0 periastron passage

The final version is available from EDP Sciences via the DOI in this record.We report near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the Eta Carinae massive binary system during 2008–2009 using the CRIRES spectrograph mounted on the 8 m UT 1 Very Large Telescope (VLT Antu). We detect a strong, broad absorption wing in He i λ10833 extending up to -1900 km s-1 across the 2009.0 spectroscopic event. Analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph ultraviolet and optical data identifies a similar high-velocity absorption (up to -2100 km s-1) in the ultraviolet resonance lines of Si iv λλ1394, 1403 across the 2003.5 event. Ultraviolet resonance lines from low-ionization species, such as Si ii λλ1527, 1533 and C ii λλ1334, 1335, show absorption only up to -1200 km s-1, indicating that the absorption with velocities -1200 to -2100 km s-1 originates in a region markedly more rapidly moving and more ionized than the nominal wind of the primary star. Seeing-limited observations obtained at the 1.6 m OPD/LNA telescope during the last four spectroscopic cycles of Eta Carinae (1989–2009) also show high-velocity absorption in He i λ10833 during periastron. Based on the large OPD/LNA dataset, we determine that material with velocities more negative than -900 km s-1 is present in the phase range 0.976 ≤ ϕ ≤ 1.023 of the spectroscopic cycle, but absent in spectra taken at ϕ ≤ 0.94 and ϕ ≥ 1.049. Therefore, we constrain the duration of the high-velocity absorption to be 95 to 206 days (or 0.047 to 0.102 in phase). We propose that the high-velocity absorption component originates in shocked gas in the wind-wind collision zone, at distances of 15 to 45 AU in the line-of-sight to the primary star. With the aid of three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the wind-wind collision zone, we find that the dense high-velocity gas is along the line-of-sight to the primary star only if the binary system is oriented in the sky such that the companion is behind the primary star during periastron, corresponding to a longitude of periastron of ω ~ 240°–270°. We study a possible tilt of the orbital plane relative to the Homunculus equatorial plane and conclude that our data are broadly consistent with orbital inclinations in the range i = 40°–60°.JHG thanks the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft for financial support for this work.     Bladder stones – red herring for resurgence of spasticity in a spinal cord injury patient with implantation of Medtronic Synchromed pump for intrathecal delivery of baclofen – a case report

    BACKGROUND: Increased spasms in spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, whose spasticity was previously well controlled with intrathecal baclofen therapy, are due to (in order of frequency) drug tolerance, increased stimulus, low reservoir volume, catheter malfunction, disease progression, human error, and pump mechanical failure. We present a SCI patient, in whom bladder calculi acted as red herring for increased spasticity whereas the real cause was spontaneous extrusion of catheter from intrathecal space. CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old male sustained a fracture of C5/6 and incomplete tetraplegia at C-8 level. Medtronic Synchromed pump for intrathecal baclofen therapy was implanted 13 months later to control severe spasticity. The tip of catheter was placed at T-10 level. The initial dose of baclofen was 300 micrograms/day of baclofen, administered by a simple continuous infusion. During a nine-month period, he required increasing doses of baclofen (875 micrograms/day) to control spasticity. X-ray of abdomen showed multiple radio opaque shadows in the region of urinary bladder. No malfunction of the pump was detected. Therefore, increased spasticity was attributed to bladder stones. Electrohydraulic lithotripsy of bladder stones was carried out successfully. Even after removal of bladder stones, this patient required further increases in the dose of intrathecal baclofen (950, 1050, 1200 and then 1300 micrograms/day). Careful evaluation of pump-catheter system revealed that the catheter had extruded spontaneously and was lying in the paraspinal space at L-4, where the catheter had been anchored before it entered the subarachnoid space. A new catheter was passed into the subarachnoid space and the tip of catheter was located at T-8 level. The dose of intrathecal baclofen was decreased to 300 micrograms/day. CONCLUSION: Vesical calculi acted as red herring for resurgence of spasticity. The real cause for increased spasms was spontaneous extrusion of whole length of catheter from subarachnoid space. Repeated bending forwards and straightening of torso for pressure relief and during transfers from wheel chair probably contributed to spontaneous extrusion of catheter from spinal canal in this patient
