    Folk Knowledge and Perceptions about the Use of Wild Fruits and Vegetables–Cross-Cultural Knowledge in the Pipli Pahar Reserved Forest of Okara, Pakistan

    \ua9 2024 by the authors.Wild fruits and vegetables (WFVs) have been vital to local communities for centuries and make an important contribution to daily life and income. However, traditional knowledge of the use of wild fruits is at risk of being lost due to inadequate documentation. This study aimed to secure this knowledge through intermittent field visits and a semi-structured questionnaire. Using various ethnobotanical data analysis tools and SPSS (IBM 25), this study identified 65 WFV species (52 genera and 29 families). These species, mostly consumed as vegetables (49%) or fruits (43%), were predominantly herbaceous (48%) in wild and semi-wild habitats (67%). 20 WFVs were known to local communities (highest RFC), Phoenix sylvestris stood out as the most utilized species (highest UV). Surprisingly, only 23% of the WFVs were sold at markets. The survey identified 21 unique WFVs that are rarely documented for human consumption in Pakistan (e.g., Ehretia obtusifolia, Euploca strigosa, Brassica juncea, Cleome brachycarpa, Gymnosporia royleana, Cucumis maderaspatanus, Croton bonplandianus, Euphorbia prostrata, Vachellia nilotica, Pongamia pinnata, Grewia asiatica, Malvastrum coromandelianum, Morus serrata, Argemone mexicana, Bambusa vulgaris, Echinochloa colonum, Solanum virginianum, Physalis angulata, Withania somnifera, Zygophyllum creticum, and Peganum harmala), as well as 14 novel uses and five novel edible parts. Despite their ecological importance, the use of WFVs has declined because local people are unaware of their cultural and economic value. Preservation of traditional knowledge through education on conservation and utilization could boost economies and livelihoods in this and similar areas worldwide

    Bi-allelic loss-of-function variants in PPFIBP1 cause a neurodevelopmental disorder with microcephaly, epilepsy, and periventricular calcifications

    PPFIBP1 encodes for the liprin-β1 protein, which has been shown to play a role in neuronal outgrowth and synapse formation in Drosophila melanogaster. By exome and genome sequencing, we detected nine ultra-rare homozygous loss-of-function variants in 16 individuals from 12 unrelated families. The individuals presented with moderate to profound developmental delay, often refractory early-onset epilepsy, and progressive microcephaly. Further common clinical findings included muscular hyper- and hypotonia, spasticity, failure to thrive and short stature, feeding difficulties, impaired vision, and congenital heart defects. Neuroimaging revealed abnormalities of brain morphology with leukoencephalopathy, ventriculomegaly, cortical abnormalities, and intracranial periventricular calcifications as major features. In a fetus with intracranial calcifications, we identified a rare homozygous missense variant that by structural analysis was predicted to disturb the topology of the SAM domain region that is essential for protein-protein interaction. For further insight into the effects of PPFIBP1 loss of function, we performed automated behavioral phenotyping of a Caenorhabditis elegans PPFIBP1/hlb-1 knockout model, which revealed defects in spontaneous and light-induced behavior and confirmed resistance to the acetylcholinesterase inhibitor aldicarb, suggesting a defect in the neuronal presynaptic zone. In conclusion, we establish bi-allelic loss-of-function variants in PPFIBP1 as a cause of an autosomal recessive severe neurodevelopmental disorder with early-onset epilepsy, microcephaly, and periventricular calcifications

    The impact of surgical delay on resectability of colorectal cancer: An international prospective cohort study

    AIM: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has provided a unique opportunity to explore the impact of surgical delays on cancer resectability. This study aimed to compare resectability for colorectal cancer patients undergoing delayed versus non-delayed surgery. METHODS: This was an international prospective cohort study of consecutive colorectal cancer patients with a decision for curative surgery (January-April 2020). Surgical delay was defined as an operation taking place more than 4 weeks after treatment decision, in a patient who did not receive neoadjuvant therapy. A subgroup analysis explored the effects of delay in elective patients only. The impact of longer delays was explored in a sensitivity analysis. The primary outcome was complete resection, defined as curative resection with an R0 margin. RESULTS: Overall, 5453 patients from 304 hospitals in 47 countries were included, of whom 6.6% (358/5453) did not receive their planned operation. Of the 4304 operated patients without neoadjuvant therapy, 40.5% (1744/4304) were delayed beyond 4 weeks. Delayed patients were more likely to be older, men, more comorbid, have higher body mass index and have rectal cancer and early stage disease. Delayed patients had higher unadjusted rates of complete resection (93.7% vs. 91.9%, P = 0.032) and lower rates of emergency surgery (4.5% vs. 22.5%, P < 0.001). After adjustment, delay was not associated with a lower rate of complete resection (OR 1.18, 95% CI 0.90-1.55, P = 0.224), which was consistent in elective patients only (OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.69-1.27, P = 0.672). Longer delays were not associated with poorer outcomes. CONCLUSION: One in 15 colorectal cancer patients did not receive their planned operation during the first wave of COVID-19. Surgical delay did not appear to compromise resectability, raising the hypothesis that any reduction in long-term survival attributable to delays is likely to be due to micro-metastatic disease

    Sequence spaces M ( Ï• ) M(Ï•)M(\phi) and N ( Ï• ) N(Ï•)N(\phi) with application in clustering

    Abstract Distance measures play a central role in evolving the clustering technique. Due to the rich mathematical background and natural implementation of l p lpl_{p} distance measures, researchers were motivated to use them in almost every clustering process. Beside l p lpl_{p} distance measures, there exist several distance measures. Sargent introduced a special type of distance measures m ( Ï• ) m(Ï•)m(\phi) and n ( Ï• ) n(Ï•)n(\phi) which is closely related to l p lpl_{p} . In this paper, we generalized the Sargent sequence spaces through introduction of M ( Ï• ) M(Ï•)M(\phi) and N ( Ï• ) N(Ï•)N(\phi) sequence spaces. Moreover, it is shown that both spaces are BK-spaces, and one is a dual of another. Further, we have clustered the two-moon dataset by using an induced M ( Ï• ) M(Ï•)M(\phi) -distance measure (induced by the Sargent sequence space M ( Ï• ) M(Ï•)M(\phi) ) in the k-means clustering algorithm. The clustering result established the efficacy of replacing the Euclidean distance measure by the M ( Ï• ) M(Ï•)M(\phi) -distance measure in the k-means algorithm

    The Effects of Diabetes and High-Fat Diet on Polymodal Nociceptor and Cold Thermoreceptor Nerve Terminal Endings in the Corneal Epithelium

    Purpose: There is a substantial body of evidence indicating that corneal sensory innervation is affected by pathology in a range of diseases. However, there are no published studies that have directly assessed whether the nerve fiber density of the different subpopulations of corneal sensory neurons are differentially affected. The present study explored the possibility that the intraepithelial nerve fiber density of corneal polymodal nociceptors and cold thermoreceptors are differentially affected in mice fed with a high-fat high cholesterol (HFHC; 21% fat, 2% cholesterol) diet and in those that also have diabetes. Methods: The mice were fed the HFHC diet for the duration of the experiment (up to 40 weeks). Mice in the diabetes group had hyperglycaemia induced with streptozotocin after 15 weeks on the HFHC diet. Age-matched control animals were fed a standard diet. All corneal nerve fibers were labeled with a pan neuronal antibody (antiprotein gene product 9.5), and polymodal nociceptors and cold thermoreceptors were labeled with antibodies directed against transient receptor potential cation channel, subfamily V, member 1 and transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily M member 8, respectively. Results: The mice fed a HFHC diet and those that in addition have hyperglycemia have similar reductions in corneal nerve fiber density consistent with small fiber neuropathy. Importantly, both treatments more markedly affected the intraepithelial axons of cold thermoreceptors than those of polymodal nociceptors. Conclusions: The results provide evidence that distinct subpopulations of corneal sensory neurons can be differentially affected by pathology

    Patterns and determinants of stress among consultant physicians working in Saudi Arabia

This study aimed to examine perceived stress and its risk factors and consequences among consultant physicians in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2014 to March 2015 among physicians who were assigned rank of consultant. The stress level was assessed using perceived stress scale (PSS).Results: A total of 582 consultants participated. The average age was 46.9&plusmn;7.9 years, 71% were males, 56% were Saudi, 15% were smokers, and 68% slept &le;6 hours per night. The median PSS score was 17 (interquartile range of 14&ndash;21), which represented 44% of maximum possible PSS score. The upper tertile of PSS score (represents a high stress level) was significantly associated with being younger, female, and Saudi. The majority (85%) considered job environment to be stressful and ~50% attributed that to a high workload and a noncooperative administration. In the year preceding this study, half of consultants frequently contemplated or even worked toward changing their medical institutes or even moving to work outside Saudi Arabia because of perception of a stressful working environment. Over the previous year, encountering life stressors, considering job environment as stressful and experiencing passive suicidal ideation, were significantly associated with higher levels of stress. In multivariate analysis, the following factors were independently associated with stress: female gender (odds ratio [OR]=2.41, 95% CI 1.58&ndash;3.70) and perceived stressful working environment (OR=3.66, 95% CI 1.87&ndash;7.17).Conclusion: Consultant physicians in Saudi Arabia experience moderate to high levels of perceived stress that are relatively comparable to physicians worldwide. A significant association was found between stress levels and both female gender and perception of a stressful working environment. Further studies are required to assess physician-based interventions and organization-directed approaches to management of stress among physicians.     Disaster-related resiliency theory among older adults who survived Typhoon Haiyan

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record This study aims to describe and explain disaster-related resiliency from the perspective of older adult survivors through the grounded theory approach. A total of 14 older adults who survived Typhoon Haiyan participated in the study. These participants were chosen through purposive sampling, followed by theoretical sampling, to attain conceptual and theoretical saturation. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, which took place in temporary shelter homes. Grounded disaster-related resiliency theory was generated on the basis of the subcategories and categories that were developed. The post-disaster recovery path can be conceptualized into three categories: (1) participants’ perception of strength, (2) self-regulating behavior, and (3) maintaining a positive attitude. These categories provide coping mechanisms that are important in building resiliency following a natural disaster. The results of this study may provide a theoretical framework for the design and implementation of disaster risk protection strategies and policies for local governments at the international level.Majmaah Universit
